Meet the Xiaomi Mi A2—even low-end phones are now losing the 3.5mm jack

Xiaomi launches a pair of phones as followups to the excellent Mi A1.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi is launching a followup device (actually, two followup devices) to the well-received Xiaomi Mi A1: the €249 ($290) Mi A2 and €179 ($209) Mi A2 Lite. Just like the Mi A1, these are stock Android devices under Google's Android One brand, and they're getting a wider release than Xiaomi devices normally get. Xiaomi's blog says the phones are headed to "40 markets around the world, with availability starting late July." The A1 had a similar "40 market" release, and while none of those countries was officially the United States, it was very easy to grab one on a site like Amazon.

Let's start with a big spec sheet:

Trump tweets anger at FCC after Pai blocks Sinclair/Tribune merger

Trump: FCC should help Sinclair because it’s a “much needed Conservative voice.”

President Donald Trump yesterday lashed out at the Federal Communications Commission over its vote to block Sinclair Broadcast Group's acquisition of Tribune Media Company.

"So sad and unfair that the FCC wouldn't approve the Sinclair Broadcast merger with Tribune," Trump tweeted.

A combination of Sinclair and Tribune "would have been a great and much needed Conservative voice for and of the People," Trump wrote. Trump contrasted the Sinclair/Tribune denial with the FCC's approval of Comcast's purchase of NBCUniversal, which happened in 2011.

Ars on your lunch break: an early warning is key to kicking cancer

We talk with pediatric oncologist Daniel Kraft about the Cancer X Prize.

Below you’ll find the second and final installment of the After On interview with pediatric oncologist and medical futurist Daniel Kraft. Please check out part one if you missed it. Otherwise, press play on the embedded player, or pull up the transcript—both of which are below.

Today, we build on the amazing results Google attained with its experimental eye scan study, and consider the unlikely things that might one day be meaningful early-warning markers for health problems. Maybe shifts in vocal tone? Tiny subtleties in sleep patterns? Social media activity? Or deep algorithms that correlate these and many, other signals? Could breath become a biomarker for cancer (almost certainly)? Could toe size foretell wild success on the NASCAR circuit (don’t count on it)?

We close by talking about the Cancer X Prize, which Daniel is overseeing. It’s all about early detection. Their highly-quotable target is a test, which can detect multiple cancers in under 24 hours for less than $24, anywhere from Tennessee to Tanzania.
