Boba Fett joins the insane pile of upcoming Star Wars film projects

James Mangold to put his western-obsessed touch on Star Wars‘ silent bounty hunter.

On the eve of one major Star Wars film launch, fans learned that the Disney and Lucasfilm empire have yet another iconic-character project in the works: a Boba Fett film.

The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, each citing their own "sources," reported the film's ongoing development on Thursday, and they were able to attach two big names to the project: director and co-writer James Mangold, who previously helmed Logan and 3:10 to Yuma, and co-writer/producer Simon Kinberg, a producer with major credits on The Martian and recent X-Men films. (The duo previously teamed up on Logan.)

This hard confirmation was put into context by the Hollywood press. Both outlets also mentioned in the same breath that a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi film, which they reported being in development back in August, still doesn't have a writer attached.

Essential cancels its next smartphone, future of the company in doubt

Andy Rubin’s smartphone company is no longer making smartphones.

It sounds like the Essential Phone is dead. A report from Bloomberg says the smartphone startup has "cancelled" its next smartphone. The company, which was once valued at a billion dollars before ever shipping a product, is now "considering selling itself."

Essential introduced itself to the public in 2017 as a new technology company founded by Andy Rubin, co-founder of Google's Android OS. Its first product was the Essential Phone, a high-end, slim bezel smartphone with a notched screen and ceramic body. The Essential Phone launched in September 2017 with a pretty bad first impression. The phone was delayed three months from its original launch window, and early customers had their private information leaked by Essential customer support, an incident Rubin called "humiliating." The phone was originally $699, but poor sales quickly led to a price drop of $200. Bloomberg says Essential sold "at least 150,000 to date, according to the person familiar with the company."

The Essential Phone was designed at a time when smartphone manufacturers all thought modular smartphones would be The Next Big Thing™. Along with MotorolaLG, Fairphone, and Google's Project Ara, Essential wanted to create a proprietary accessory ecosystem of products that could snap onto the phone. Like every other modular smartphone, Essential's modular system was a failure, and only one module was ever created for the Essential Phone: a $200 360-degree camera. The camera was low resolution, bulky, and hot. It was so hot that it had an actual cooling fan inside the camera that would spin up when you took 360-degree pictures.

Trade group prez: Loot box regulation “challenges our freedom to innovate”

“Those that get it right will be rewarded. Those that don’t won’t.”

As governments around the world enact or consider regulations that would treat randomized video game loot box purchases as gambling, Entertainment Software Association President Michael Gallagher defended loot boxes as just an example of innovative and creative new monetization models his member publishers are trying.

Gallagher made his first extensive public comments on the loot box issue in a speech at the Nordic Game Conference this week (quoted extensively by GamesIndustry.biz). At the event, he said the game industry is "really, really good at... engag[ing] consumers, and build[ing] a business model around our products that is dynamic, exciting and, at the end of the day, profitable... in a way where the gamers are pleased with how we interact with them." Government regulation of loot boxes, on the other hand, "challenges our industry's freedom to innovate, and impairs our ability to continuously test new business models, which drive creativity and engagement with our audience."

Noting that loot box-style mechanisms have existed in games for a long time, Gallagher suggested that gamers can essentially vote on the practice with their wallets; a form of "the consumer telling you if something is right or wrong by their participation... Those that get it right will be rewarded," he said. "Those that don't won't."

Google surpassed Amazon in global smart speaker shipments in the first quarter of 2018, according to a report this week from research firm Canalys.

Canalys says Google shipped 3.2 million Google Home and Home Mini speakers over the course of the quarter. Amazon, meanwhile, is said to have shipped 2.5 million Echo speakers.

According to the report, Google jumped from taking 19.3 percent of smart speaker shipments in Q1 2017 to 36.2 percent this past quarter. Amazon accounted for a whopping 79.6 percent of shipments in the year-ago quarter but fell to 27.7 percent in Q1 2018, the report says.

TRON Cryptocurrency Founder Plans to Buy BitTorrent Inc

More than thirteen years after BitTorrent Inc. entered Silicon Valley as one of the hottest new startups, the company is getting close to being acquired. Justin Sun, the founder of the cryptocurrency TRON, is planning to take the company in and both parties are finalizing the latest details. With a multi-billion dollar market cap, TRON aims to decentralize the web, partly powered by BitTorrent.

Founded by BitTorrent inventor Bram Cohen, BitTorrent Inc. is best known for its torrent client uTorrent, which has more than 100 million users.

Despite this massive userbase, however, the company never transformed into the next billion-dollar tech giant, as some as the early investors had hoped.

In fact, it has only gone downhill in recent years, in part due to questionable management practices. Things have calmed down since, but according to new information gathered by TorrentFreak, there is a major change afoot.

A few weeks ago we reported that BitTorrent Inc. quietly renamed its company to “Rainberry” last year. The company informed us that this was “purely a corporate decision.” While that may be the case, it could also be related to the company’s plans to be acquired.

Legal paperwork filed earlier this year reveals that Rainberry was sued because it allegedly violated a “No Shop” clause in an agreement with a potential buyer. This potential buyer, who signed a letter of intent, is none other than TRON founder Justin Sun.

TRON is one of the hottest and controversial cryptocurrencies. After a successful ICO, it now has a market cap of more than $4 billion, only surpassed by a few others. And with Sun at the helm, it makes headlines nearly every day.

The TRON mainnet, which will go live in a few days, has the ultimate goal to “decentralize the web.” BitTorrent would fit well in this picture, and the TRON whitepaper mentions torrents as one of the pillars.

TRON

Sun first began pursuing the acquisition of BitTorrent Inc.’s assets in September last year. In January 2018, both parties finalized a letter of intent for the acquisition, of which Sun returned a signed copy.

While it appeared that things were moving along nicely, BitTorrent Inc. CEO Ro Choy came back with a surprising reply.

“Within literally hours after the parties agreed to the Letter of Intent, and after Ro Choy began performing the terms of the Letter of Intent, Defendant claims it received three ‘superior’ bids from companies that David Chao admitted they had been communicating with,” Sun claims in the lawsuit.

Sun asked the court for a restraining order to prevent BitTorrent from talking to other potential buyers, as was agreed in the letter of intent. The case was swiftly dismissed by the court, but not without leaving a paper trail.

While it is clear that TRON’s founder is eager to acquire BitTorrent, less is known about what happened afterward. Did both parties throw their letter of intent in the trash mid-February, or was the deal still on?

Then, our research pointed out another interesting fact which suggests that the deal is going forward. At the end of February, right when the exclusivity period set in the letter of intent ended, a holding company named “Rainberry Acquisition” was registered in California.

This company is registered to none other than TRON founder Justin Sun, who completed the statement of information last month, as can be seen below.

Rainberry Acquisition paperwork

TorrentFreak reached out to Justin Sun, but TRON’s founder did not immediately reply to our request for comment.

When we confronted BitTorrent Inc. with the information, the company confirmed our findings and the interest from Sun, but it noted that the acquisition is not 100% finalized yet. More information will likely be released at a later stage, if all goes well.

At this point, Sun’s plans for BitTorrent Inc. remain unclear. He has not spoken about the acquisition in public, obviously, but it’s likely that it will be used to the advantage of TRON.

Interestingly, BitTorrent Inc. founder Bram Cohen has also taken an interest in cryptocurrencies, with the goal of creating a superior one called Chia. As far as we know, he is not part of TRON’s future in any way.

A copy of Sun’s complaint against Rainberry (f/k/a BitTorrent) is available here (pdf).

This is the second part of our interview with Chris Beams, founder of the decentralised cryptocurrency exchange, Bisq. We discuss the inner workings of the Bisq service, how it compares to the widely used platform Local Bitcoins, and the intricacies of designing decentral P2P systems for financial operations.

From there, we move into some of the political/philosophical implications of Bisq as a Distributed Autonomous Organisation (DAO): are we evolving, with Bitcoin and other P2P networks, functionalities which parallel certain present-day institutions, and which could one day eliminate the need for establishment altogether?

And could a future democracy be composed of “opt-in” components that actually do better at providing for our basic human needs?

Steal This Show aims to release bi-weekly episodes featuring insiders discussing copyright and file-sharing news. It complements our regular reporting by adding more room for opinion, commentary, and analysis.

The guests for our news discussions will vary, and we’ll aim to introduce voices from different backgrounds and persuasions. In addition to news, STS will also produce features interviewing some of the great innovators and minds.
