Planting GMOs kills so many bugs that it helps non-GMO crops

Bt corn protects neighboring peppers and green beans, cuts pesticide use.

One of the great purported boons of GMOs was that they could allow farmers to use fewer pesticides, some of are known to be harmful to humans or other species. Bt corn, cotton, and soybeans have been engineered to express insect-killing proteins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, and they have indeed been successful at controlling the crops' respective pests. They even protect the non-Bt versions of the same crop that must be planted in adjacent fields to help limit the evolution of Bt resistance.

But new work shows that Bt corn also controls pests in other types of crops planted nearby, specifically vegetables. And, in doing so, it cuts down on the use of pesticides on these crops, as well.

Entomologists and ecologists compared crop damage and insecticide use in four agricultural mid-Atlantic states: New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. Their data came from the years before Bt corn was widespread (1976-1996) and continued after it was adopted (1996-2016). They also looked at the levels of the pests themselves: two different species of moths, commonly known as the European corn borer and corn earworm. They were named as scourges of corn, but their larvae eat a number of different crops, including peppers and green beans.

Tamilrockers Arrests: Police Parade Alleged Movie Pirates on TV

Three men said to be behind notorious India-focused pirate site Tamilrockers have been arrested. One of the men is believed to be a site administrator and all are said to be well educated, with degrees in computer science and engineering. Indian police paraded the men before the media yesterday. Two other men, reportedly linked to partner site DVD Rockers, were also detained.

Just two years ago around 277 million people used the Internet in India. Today there are estimates as high as 355 million and with a population of more than 1.3 billion, India has plenty of growth yet to come.

Also evident is that in addition to a thirst for hard work, many Internet-enabled Indians have developed a taste for Internet piracy. While the US and Europe were the most likely bases for pirate site operators between 2000 and 2015, India now appears in a growing number of cases, from torrent and streaming platforms to movie release groups.

One site that is clearly Indian-focused is the ever-popular Tamilrockers. The movie has laughed in the face of the authorities for a number of years, skipping from domain to domain as efforts to block the site descend into a chaotic game of whack-a-mole. Like The Pirate Bay, Tamilrockers has burned through plenty of domains including tamilrockers.in, tamilrockers.ac, tamilrockers.me, tamilrockers.co, tamilrockers.is, tamilrockers.us and tamilrockers.ro.

Now, however, the authorities are claiming a significant victory against the so-far elusive operators of the site. The anti-piracy cell of the Kerala police announced last evening that they’ve arrested five men said to be behind both Tamilrockers and alleged sister site, DVDRockers.

They’re named as alleged Tamilrockers owner ‘Prabhu’, plus ‘Karthi’ and ‘Suresh’ (all aged 24), plus alleged DVD Rockers owner ‘Johnson’ and ‘Jagan’ (elsewhere reported as ‘Maria John’). The men were said to be generating between US$1,500 and US$3,000 each per month. The average salary in India is around $600 per annum.

While details of how the suspects were caught tend to come later in US and European cases, the Indian authorities are more forthright. According to Anti-Piracy Cell Superintendent B.K. Prasanthan, who headed the team that apprehended the men, it was a trail of advertising revenue crumbs that led them to the suspects.

Prasanthan revealed that it was an email, sent by a Haryana-based ad company to an individual who was arrested in 2016 in a similar case, that helped in tracking the members of Tamilrockers.

“This ad company had sent a mail to [the individual], offering to publish ads on the website he was running. In that email, the company happened to mention that they have ties with Tamilrockers. We got the information about Tamilrockers through this ad company,” Prasanthan said.

That information included the bank account details of the suspects.

Given the technical nature of the sites, it’s perhaps no surprise that the suspects are qualified in the IT field. Prasanthan revealed that all had done well.

“All the gang members were technically qualified. It even included MSc and BSc holders in computer science. They used to record movies in pieces from various parts of the world and join [them together]. We are trying to trace more members of the gang including Karthi’s brothers,” Prasanathan said.

All five men were remanded in custody but not before they were paraded in front of the media, footage which later appeared on TV.

Ford recalls 1.3 million cars for steering wheels that might fall off

The issue affects model years 2014 through 2018

On Wednesday, Ford announced it was recalling 1.3 million Ford Fusions and Lincoln MKZs for a rather alarming defect: it's possible their steering wheels could fall off. The problem affects model years 2014 through 2018 and vehicles built at two different factories: Flat Rock and Hermosillo.

The issue appears to be the bolt that holds the steering wheel onto the steering column, which can loosen over time. Obviously, the consequences of this are serious, because no one wants their steering wheel to come away in their hands while driving.

Ford's fix is to replace the bolt with a better one. Ford says the replacement part is "a longer bolt with more robust thread engagement and larger nylon patch placed properly for proper torque retention." If you happen to have a Ford Fusion or Lincoln MKZ that might be affected, we suggest checking with your local dealer to get the issue remedied.

Malware attack on 400k PCs caused by backdoored BitTorrent app

Once the stuff of spy novels, supply chain attacks are becoming common.

(credit: Jeremy Brooks)

A recent malware campaign that attempted to install a resource-draining currency miner on more than 400,000 computers in 12 hours was caused by a malicious backdoor that was sneaked into a BitTorrent application called Mediaget, a Microsoft researcher said Tuesday.

The failed campaign is the latest example of what researchers call a supply-chain attack, which aims to infect large numbers of people by compromising a popular piece of hardware or software. Other examples of recent supply-chain attacks include a backdoored update of the CCleaner disk-maintenence program delivered to 2.27 million people, a tainted version of the Transmission BitTorrent client that installed ransomware on Macs, and a collection of malicious Android apps that came preinstalled on phones from two different manufacturers.

One of the more significant supply-chain attacks to come to light was the tampering of the update process for M.E.Doc, a tax-accounting application that's widely used in Ukraine. The compromised update seeded the NotPetya wiper worm, which shut down computers all over the world last July.
