Apple makes iOS more school-friendly with ClassKit educational framework

Upcoming iOS update offers more beyond 11.3’s AR and throttling controls.

CHICAGO—Educators will have new ways to use iOS in schools thanks to Apple's latest software update. On a stage at a school in Chicago today, Apple announced ClassKit, a new framework for making educational apps on iOS.

We first learned of ClassKit when Apple users were sifting through a beta of iOS 11.3. It's a software development framework, in the tradition of prior Apple-developed frameworks like ARKit, HealthKit, and SpriteKit. This framework is focused on taking care of some of the heavy lifting for developers who are making apps for use in schools and other educational contexts.

Apple created a few native apps to go along with ClassKit. The new Schoolwork app gives students and teachers a digital space to assign, complete, and review assignments. The free, cloud-based app lets teachers assign work to students and see each students’ progress while they complete the assignment in their own version of the Schoolwork app. Teachers can even grade these assignments directly in the app, making assignment management much easier than if dozens of students were to hand in individual papers.

Apple’s new 9.7-inch iPad offers Pencil support for $329

And educational institutions can get it for a little cheaper at $299.

CHICAGO—Apple today announced an updated version of the iPad—its cheapest yet, the company says. And the new device comes with a focus on education. The new iPad starts at $329 for general consumers, but educational institutions can get it for a little cheaper at $299. It's available to order today, and shipments start next week.

This new, 9.7-inch tablet closely resembles existing models. However, it adds support for the Apple Pencil peripheral, which was previously only supported on the iPad Pro. Apple will also release new versions of its productivity software Pages, Keynote, and Numbers to support the Apple Pencil.

Unfortunately, the Apple Pencil is not included with the iPad. It is available separately for $99. Apple also announced that numerous other accessories are coming to for the iPad, including a $49 "Crayon" accessory from Logitech that is more affordable than Apple Pencil.

A cab ride in a Jaguar? Waymo will go classy for 20,000 electric robotaxis

The vehicles will begin testing this year for commercial deployment in 2020.

Waymo

On Tuesday morning, Waymo revealed the newest partner for its planned autonomous taxi service: Jaguar. The two companies are teaming up to build a fleet of self-driving I-Paces, Jaguar's new battery electric vehicle (BEV) which goes on sale later this year. The vehicles will start testing this year and enter Waymo's fleet by 2020. What's more, this is a pretty significant order—Waymo CEO John Krafcik said that up to 20,000 self-driving I-Paces will be built in the first two years.

It's also significant that the integration of Waymo's sensors and self-driving technology will be built into these I-Paces at the factory in Graz, Austria. Waymo's current Pacifica Hybrid minivans have been delivered by Chrysler and converted after the fact by Waymo, but as it and Uber (which goes through a similar process with its Volvo XC90s) have been discovering, that's not a terribly efficient way of doing things.

That 3D-printed rocket company just got $35 million in private financing

A test flight is planned for late 2020, with commercial launches beginning in 2021.

Relativity Space aims to not only 3D print its rocket engines but also nearly all of the booster itself. And now it has raised a considerable amount of money for a company with just 17 employees. On Tuesday, Relativity Space announced an additional $35 million round of funding to help bring its Terran rocket to market.

The funds were raised as part of "Series B" financing, a second round of venture capital fundraising in which investors pay a higher price for stock than original investors. The latest round of investment was led by Playground Global, and it included returning participation from Social Capital, Y Combinator, and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

According to Relativity, the new funding will allow the company to accelerate its efforts to attract launch contracts for future constellations of satellites. Already, company co-founder Tim Ellis has said Relativity has secured more than $1 billion in commitments for future orders provided it can become operational on a reasonable schedule.

No show does wigs as well as The Americans—no show gets ‘80s tech as well, either.

Video: In our latest Tech on TV episode, we travel back to spy-riddled 1980s DC.

Produced and shot by Justin Wolfson. Captions available.

You may not immediately look at The Americans—FX's Cold War sleeper-cell agent drama—and think "tech," but this critically-beloved series' IT bonafides have been hiding in plain sight beneath wigs and a rockin' '80s soundtrack just like its main characters. Episode titles reference software like Lotus Notes or touchstones like ARPANET, and the show's writers' room doubles as a veritable who's who of both US and Soviet intelligence agency technology experts. (Perhaps no one should be surprised that one of the show's co-creators is a dedicated Ars reader.)

"We love that shit," Joe Weisberg, co-showrunner and former CIA agent, told Ars last summer when discussing his beloved era tech. "You wouldn't confuse us with full-borne technophiles, but we grew up in the '80s. We grew up with this technology, have a great fondness for it, and have fantastic technical advisors [on the show]."

Through its five seasons, The Americans has nimbly woven everything from early console gaming to office mail robots into its vivid version of Washington, DC. And though the show realistically centers on its international and intra-marriage conflicts, the attention to detail for '80s innovations gets just as much scrutiny and care from the series' staff. That means some of the most memorable '80s tech touchstones for viewers get left on the writers' room wall.
