Craig Wright accused of “perpetrating a scheme” to con Dave Kleiman and his estate.
The brother of a deceased Florida man has sued Craig Wright, an Australian best known for initially claiming in 2016 (but ultimately failing to definitively prove) that he was Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s mythical creator.
In this new lawsuit, Wright is accused of effectively swindling Dave Kleiman’s estate—his brother Ira Kleiman is the one who has filed the case—out of a massive cache of bitcoins that today are worth more than $5 billion.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in West Palm Beach on February 14, and it was first reported by Vice Motherboard and Bloomberg on Tuesday.
Lucky downloaders got the entire game well ahead of April 17 release.
A demo version of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life released for the PlayStation 4 yesterday surprisingly included access to the entire game for many players, well before its official release outside of Japan. Sega has taken down the demo temporarily as it works to correct the issue.
The 30GB demo download for Yakuza 6 contained the data needed for the entire game, an apparent effort to let demo players easily and eventually upgrade to a full purchase without losing their early progress. But many demo players quickly discovered they could advance in the demo much farther than the intended Chapter 1 limit found in an earlier Japanese demo; players could even earn PSN trophies for their progress. That's despite the fact that Yakuza 6 isn't set to launch outside of Japan until April 17, following a recent delay.
Publisher Sega took the flawed demo down from the PlayStation Store in North America and EMEA markets within hours of the initial reports, and the company apologized on Twitter for the inconvenience. "We are as upset as you are, and had hoped to have this demo available for everyone today," the company wrote. "We discovered that some were able to use the demo to unlock the full game. We’re looking into the nature of the issue. Thank you for your patience."
A few pieces of exciting news in the space of a few hours have many PlayStation 4 owners hot under the collar today. Following yesterday’s release of a kernel exploit for firmware v4.55 by developer ‘Qwertyoruiop’, a few hours ago a full implementation of the exploit landed on Github courtesy of SpecterDev. On top, there’s news of an interesting ‘payload’ quietly circulating.
Largely since the advent of the third generation of games consoles in the early to mid 80s, adventurous users have been interested in making their machines do things they’re not supposed to.
In common with the 8bit games-capable computers that preceded them, much emphasis was placed on piracy, with people seeking to cut console games costs with copies of what would otherwise be expensive investments. Alongside, however, was a rapidly developing “homebrew” scene in which often amateur coders sought to utilize their purchased hardware for non-conventional means.
These days the process of digitally cracking open a device is much more complex and has given birth to the term ‘jailbreaking’. It can be applied to devices as diverse as iPhones and PlayStations but it all means the same thing – the removal of restrictions put in place by manufacturers in order to control what can be done with a device.
These restrictions mostly relate to the running of software, with the big manufacturers wanting people to not only use ‘app stores’ that they control but also to pay for the privilege. The jailbreaking scene often aims to undermine the former but despite many good intentions, it often gets dragged into piracy as a result.
Yesterday there was cause for both homebrew coders and pirates-in-waiting to celebrate with the announcement that developer ‘Qwertyoruiop’ had released the full code for his PS4 firmware 4.55 kernel exploit.
While the release caused much excitement, the kernel exploit still needs a usermode entry point. As reported by Wololo, that could come via the Webkit exploit previously released by Qwertyoruiop for PS4 firmware 4.07 a while back.
So, to put things into basic terms, while the new exploit works up to v4.55, the user exploit only works up to those with PS4s running v4.07, at least until another usermode exploit for later firmwares is released.
But with anticipation in the air, a few hours later yet more exciting news appeared on the horizon. Taking Qwertyoruiop’s v4.55 kernel exploit and running with it, developer SpecterDev announced on Twitter that he’d published a full implementation of the exploit on Github.
In other words, SpecterDev has released a fully-functional jailbreak of PS4 firmware 4.55, which opens up a whole world of opportunities for the homebrew scene – and beyond. That being said, he’s careful to note on Github that others will have to step up to fill in the gaps from here.
“[The implementation] will allow you to run arbitrary code as kernel, to allow jailbreaking and kernel-level modifications to the system. This release however, does not contain any code related to defeating anti-piracy mechanisms or running homebrew,” he explained.
Nevertheless, SpecterDev’s code has an inbuilt ‘ear’ that can take instructions (a so-called ‘payload’) and do something useful with them.
“This exploit does include a loader that listens for payloads on port 9020 and will execute them upon receival,” he explains.
Rumors suggest that there’s already some kind of payload being shared privately. We haven’t been able to confirm what it does yet but people seem excited by it.
A video showing the jailbreak in action has been uploaded to YouTube and can be seen below.
There’s not much USCYBERCOM, NSA can do without presidential order—maybe even with one.
In testimony before the US Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, National Security Agency Director and US Cyber Command Commander Admiral Michael Rogers told senators that measures taken thus far by the US government in response to the information operations, malware attacks, and network intrusions attributed to “Russian actors” had not done anything to deter further such attacks. And it’s not clear that USCYBERCOM (essentially the US military’s top command for network defense and offense), or the NSA for that matter, will be able to do anything soon to change that.
Russia’s alleged intrusions included attempts to gain access to voter data. Thus far there’s no evidence any data was modified, though some voter data was clearly accessed. The Department of Homeland Security isn't certain any of the systems were altered or compromised, but it has acknowledged that 21 states’ systems had been “targeted” in some way.
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for the Office of Cybersecurity and Communications Jeanette Manfra told NBC News in a February 8 interview that “an exceptionally small number of them were actually successfully penetrated." And yesterday, NBC News reported that seven states’ voter data systems had been “compromised” in advance of the 2016 elections—compromises that have largelyalready been reported.
