YouTube TV subscribers can now watch live TV on Apple TV, Roku devices

Announcement comes after the rollout was delayed at the end of 2017.

Nearly a year after its debut, YouTube TV is available on two huge streaming platforms: Apple TV and Roku. The streaming video company announced that dedicated YouTube TV channels for Apple's set-top box and Roku devices are now available for subscribers to download. While you can't sign up for a new YouTube TV subscription on either app, current subscribers can sign in to their accounts and watch live TV on those devices.

The new additions come after months of delay—YouTube initially planned to push out the YouTube TV app for Apple TV and Roku at the end of last year. In October, YouTube TV hit Xbox One and Android TV devices, but the company pushed back the rollout for Apple TV and Roku into the first quarter of 2018. The YouTube TV channel is ready to download on 4th-generation Apple TV devices, Apple TV 4K, all Roku TVs, and most Roku streaming devices. YouTube TV's help page lists all supported device models.

YouTube TV is the company's live TV streaming service that charges $35 per month for access to over 40 live TV channels including ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, FX, ESPN, FS1, SyFy, USA, and others. It also includes a Cloud DVR service that lets you record an unlimited number of shows, as well as the option to create a total of six user accounts, each with personalized TV recommendations and DVR content.

Has the PS4 peaked? Annual console sales are flat for 2017

This is about the age when Sony systems start their long, slow decline.

After the relative disappointment of the PlayStation 3, the PS4 has been an unquestioned sales success for Sony. The system has raced to sell an impressive 76 million units worldwide through the end of 2017, and it maintains a dominant position over the Xbox One in the high-end console sales race (though Microsoft claims not to care very much about that relative positioning).

But Sony's quarterly earnings report last night contained a bit of a gray cloud for the PS4's longer-term prospects. For the first time since its launch, shipments for the PS4 in the all-important holiday quarter were down year over year, from 9.7 million in 2016 to 9 million in 2017. The decline means calendar year shipments for the PS4 were flat from 2016 to 2017, sitting steady at 19.4 million.

Cryptocurrency botnets are rendering some companies unable to operate

Smominru botnet has infected 526,000 machines, generated as much as $3.6 million.

A massive cryptocurrency mining botnet has generated as much as $3.6 million dollars' worth of the digital coin known as Monero since last May, a researcher said Wednesday. The windfall isn't the only noteworthy thing about the botnet. Dubbed Smominru, it's also significant for the 526,000 computers it has infected and for the ability of its operators to withstand takedown attempts by whitehats.

"As Bitcoin has become prohibitively resource-intensive to mine outside of dedicated mining farms, interest in Monero has increased dramatically," a researcher, who uses the pseudonym Kafeine, wrote in a blog post published by security firm Proofpoint. "While Monero can no longer be mined effectively on desktop computers, a distributed botnet like that described here can prove quite lucrative for its operators."

Like cryptocurrency mining botnets known as Adylkuzz and Zealot, Smominru appropriates potent exploit code developed by the National Security Agency and later published online by a group calling itself the Shadow Brokers.

Playboy’s Copyright Lawsuit Threatens Online Expression, Boing Boing Argues

After being branded a clickbait site by Playboy, popular blog Boing Boing has stressed the importance of hyperlinks to a Federal Court in California. Links are a crucial part of the Internet and an important tool for free speech, it argues. This means that, under the right conditions, linking to copyright-infringing material should be considered fair use.

Early 2016, Boing Boing co-editor Xeni Jardin published an article in which she linked to an archive of every Playboy centerfold image till then.

“Kind of amazing to see how our standards of hotness, and the art of commercial erotic photography, have changed over time,” Jardin commented.

While the linked material undoubtedly appealed to many readers, Playboy itself took offense to the fact that infringing copies of their work were being shared in public. While Boing Boing didn’t upload or store the images in question, the publisher filed a complaint.

Playboy accused the blog’s parent company Happy Mutants of various counts of copyright infringement, claiming that it exploited their playmates’ images for commercial purposes.

Last month Boing Boing responded to the allegations with a motion to dismiss. The case should be thrown out, it argued, noting that linking to infringing material for the purpose of reporting and commentary, is not against the law.

This prompted Playboy to fire back, branding Boing Boing a “clickbait” site. Playboy informed the court that the popular blog profits off the work of others and has no fair use defense.

Before the California District Court decides on the matter, Boing Boing took the opportunity to reply to Playboy’s latest response. According to the defense, Playboy’s case is an attack on people’s freedom of expression.

“Playboy claims this is an important case. It is partially correct: if the Court allows this case to go forward, it will send a dangerous message to everyone engaged in ordinary online commentary,” Boing Boing’s reply reads.

Referencing a previous Supreme Court decision, the blog says that the Internet democratizes access to speech, with websites as a form of modern-day pamphlets.

Links to source materials posted by third parties give these “pamphlets” more weight as they allow readers to form their own opinion on the matter, Boing Boing argues. If the court upholds Playboy’s arguments, however, this will become a risky endeavor.

“Playboy, however, would apparently prefer a world in which the ‘pamphleteer’ must ask for permission before linking to primary sources, on pain of expensive litigation,” the defense writes.

“This case merely has to survive a motion to dismiss to launch a thousand more expensive lawsuits, chilling a broad variety of lawful expression and reporting that merely adopts the common practice of linking to the material that is the subject of the report.”

The defense says that there are several problems with Playboy’s arguments. Among other things, Boing Boing argues that did nothing to cause the unauthorized posting of Playboy’s work on Imgur and YouTube.

Another key argument is that linking to copyright-infringing material should be considered fair use, since it was for purposes of criticism, commentary, and news reporting.

“Settled precedent requires dismissal, both because Boing Boing did not induce or materially contribute to any copyright infringement and, in the alternative, because Boing Boing engaged in fair use,” the defense writes.

Instead of going after Boing Boing for contributory infringement, Playboy could actually try to uncover the people who shared the infringing material, they argue. There is nothing that prevents them from doing so.

After hearing the arguments from both sides it is now up to the court to decide how to proceed. Given what’s at stake, the eventual outcome in this case is bound to set a crucial precedent.

A copy of Boing Boing’s reply is available here (pdf).

YouTube will put disclaimers on state-funded broadcasts to fight propaganda

In efforts to educate viewers on where their news comes from.

YouTube's latest strategy to fight the spread of misinformation involves putting a disclaimer on videos from certain news sources. The online video website announced it will start labeling videos posted by state-funded broadcasters to alert viewers that the content is, in some part, funded by a government source. YouTube will begin labeling videos today, and the policy extends to outlets including the US's Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and the Russian government broadcaster RT.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, PBS videos will now have the label "publicly funded American broadcaster," while RT will have this disclaimer: "RT is funded in whole or in part by the Russian government."

The new policy is YouTube's way of informing viewers about where the content they're watching is coming from, a piece of information often hidden or left unsought by the viewers themselves. “The principle here is to provide more information to our users, and let our users make the judgment themselves, as opposed to us being in the business of providing any sort of editorial judgment on any of these things ourselves,” YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan told the WSJ.

Testosterone may protect men from autoimmune diseases

A new explanation for why males are less susceptible to these disorders than women.

Enlarge / Strong man is strong. (credit: Lauren Mitchell / Flickr)

Testosterone. Source of prostates and testes, muscles and machismo, chest hair, and according to some, even math skills. Its levels are only one of the biological differences between males and females, but they may help to explain another: the discrepancies in the incidence of autoimmune diseases.

Women are three to nine times more likely than men to suffer from autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS), Grave’s disease, celiac disease, systemic lupus erythematous, and rheumatoid arthritis. Not only do women get these diseases at higher rates, they usually get them at younger ages.

Men’s higher testosterone levels—about seven to eight times higher than women’s—have been shown to be protective for MS in both mice and men. But it was not clear exactly how this worked. Recent work in a mouse model of MS has filled in the downstream effectors that mediate testosterone’s protective effects. These effectors might be useful as therapeutics, whereas testosterone use really isn’t, especially for women, who are the ones who need it most.
