Guidemaster: Fitness trackers to consider before buying a smartwatch

Fitness bands are still around, and one of these might be the best tracker for you.

Update: To help all the readers out there considering health-related New Years resolutions, we've been testing the latest and greatest fitness trackers in recent months in order to update our Fitness Tracker Guidemaster. We originally put together our list of favorites in January 2018, but below you'll find our recommendations updated to include the best devices you can get in 2020.

The smartwatch hasn't swallowed up the fitness tracker yet. While many are intrigued by the powers of the Apple Watch, Wear OS devices, and the like, old-school fitness trackers still have their uses—and they're usually much easier on your wallet, too. The goal of the humble fitness band remains the same as it was when these devices were new: track daily activity in all its forms, from daily steps to intense workouts, from heart rate dips and spikes to the calm waves of sleep. Most of today's fitness trackers haven't changed much aesthetically, either. They're still, by and large, wristbands.

With so many devices sharing the same basic goals and set of features, it can be hard to deduce which tracker is right for you. But from our testing, there are some fitness trackers that stand out among the rest—some for their thoughtful applications, others for their versatility, and some for their focused approach to fitness training. We've looked back at the fitness trackers we've reviewed and selected the best devices that are most likely to help you get and stay in shape.

Climate change melting pre-Viking artifacts out of Norway’s glaciers

Reindeer hunters, traders, and the earliest Vikings all left artifacts on the ice.

Ancient ice has preserved thousands of artifacts left in Norway’s highest mountain passes by hunters and travelers over the last 6,000 years. But even as rising temperatures are revealing these artifacts for the first time, the vanishing ice is putting them at risk.

Even well above the tree line in Norway’s highest mountains, ancient fields of ice are shrinking as Earth’s climate warms. As the ice has vanished, it’s been giving up the treasures it has preserved in cold storage for the last 6,000 years: Neolithic arrows, scraps of clothing from the Bronze Age, and skis from Viking Age traders. And those artifacts have provided some surprising insights into how ancient Norwegians made their livings.

Oppland’s past

Organic materials like wood, textiles, and hides are relatively rare finds at archaeological sites—unless they’re protected from the microorganisms that cause decay, they don’t tend to last long. Extreme cold is one reliable way to keep artifacts relatively fresh for a few thousand years, but once thawed out, these materials tend to degrade quickly. With climate change shrinking ice cover around the world, glacial archaeologists are racing the clock to find these newly-revealed artifacts, preserve them, and study them.

The technology behind Bitcoin is being used to allow the resale of digital content, and the technology could render DRM obsolete.

A decentralised PC game store was launched recently. Called Robot Cache, the store aims to allow the resale of digitally distributed games, and it's making this possible using Blockchain technology.

To put it very simply, Blockchain is essentially a distributed, peer-to-peer database that ensures all transactions are easily verifiable, and completely transparent. In the case of Robot Cache and digital resales, it's being used to ensure that a piece of data, in this case single licensed copy of the game, cannot be activated and used at more than one single location. Thus, this would allow the transfer of ownership of digital copies, with the Blockchain network working in the background to ensure a sold copy can only be used by the new owner.

"You can't have DRM-free and resell in the same thing otherwise it doesn't work," said Brian Fargo, the founder of Robot Cache. "In order for us to facilitate the resell, the product has to be tracked on the blockchain.

"That very aspect of it is the very thing that allows people to resell their games. We think it's well worth the trade-off... and they get remunerated if it gets relicensed. I just see it as a win for consumers and publishers."

Blockchain technology has become increasingly hyped up in recent times, as more companies seek to attach themselves to this new technology. A soft-drink makers recently changed their name from Long Island Iced Tea Corp. to Long Blockchain Corp. and saw its share value skyrocket by 200%. But so far, it's the cryptocurrencies such as BitCoin, LiteCoin and Ripple, that have grabbed the most headlines as the technologies to come from Blockchain.

For their part, Robot Cache will also utilize their own cryptocurrency.

But it's Robot Cache's use of Blockchain as a way to track digital ownership, perhaps forever changing the way digital ownership is seen, that might also bring the most controversy. It might also fall foul of publishers, many of which already expressly forbid the resale of their digital products, who are also not keen on having a resale market exist for their digital products for which they do not receive any financial compensation.
