Spanish Police Arrest Seven in Pirate Sports Streaming Crackdown

Police in Spain say they have arrested seven people following a crackdown on illegal sports streaming. Raids took place in several locations around the country, targeting an operation that’s said to generate around 1.4 million euros. Seven websites have been blocked and three bank accounts frozen. Police say that further arrests are not being ruled out.

While most large broadcasters around the world now offer comprehensive sports packages to their customers, subscriptions are often quite expensive.

This has led to the proliferation of pirate services, each dedicated to bringing live sports to the masses at massively reduced prices or even completely free.

As a result, it’s now possible to watch almost any sport from a pirate source, whether that’s via a website, an augmented Kodi setup, or a premium IPTV provider. Today, however, there’s one less pirate service available after a series of raids in Spain.

According to the National Police, raids took place in Madrid, Alicante, Albacete, Gandía, and the Valencian cities of Xátiva and Antequera this week. In total, seven people were arrested for illegally broadcasting football matches.

Unusually in such cases, the suspects are alleged to have offered matches via a number of mechanisms, including direct download, streaming, subscription streaming, and peer-to-peer distribution. This, the police say, allowed them to have the broadest possible access to the market.

The group’s servers were scattered around the world; some located in Spain, others in France, with the remainder in the United States and Canada.

The investigation began in 2016 following a complaint from La Liga, the top professional association in Spanish football. The group alleged that a total of 13 websites were illegally offering lists of links which enabled visitors to access content to which it holds the exclusive rights.

Police say the operation was well organized, with matches presented to Internet users with schedules ordered by championships. Revenue was generated via advertising which appeared on the various pages viewed by visitors.

It’s claimed that the sites’ operators also attempted to make their scattered servers harder to find by utilizing intermediary companies, including those that offer server location anonymization services.

Across the country, eight house searches reportedly yielded a trove of evidence, both digital and physical, detailing the pirate operation and the profit obtained from it.

At this early stage, police estimate the “economic benefit” to the defendants from subscriptions and advertising to be in the region of 1.4 million euros, although it’s unclear whether those are actual historic or projected gains.

Following the raids, seven websites were ordered to be blocked and three bank accounts, said to be linked to the pirate operation, were frozen. Police say that the investigation continues so further arrests and website blockades can’t be ruled out.

The MPAA has sensationally claimed that almost 70% of Kodi users are pirates.

The MPAA made the claim during a panel discussion hosted by the Copyright Alliance, the Hollywood trade group also describing streaming piracy as the next generation of piracy, or Piracy 3.0.

During the discussion, a live demo of Kodi was set up to demonstrate how easy it was to obtain pirated content, if the right add-ons are installed.

The makers of Kodi, the XBMC Foundation, maintain that the media platform, previously known as XBMC and for exclusive use with the Xbox console, is completely legal and that they do not endorse any piracy add-ons that people are free to add to their Kodi installs. In fact, the XBMC Foundation have even threatened to take legal action against makers of piracy add-ons in the past.

The MPAA estimates that there are 38 million users of Kodi around the world, a figure that the XBMC Foundation do not dispute. However, the MPAA's claim that 68.5% of Kodi users pirate movies of TV shows, according to the XBMC Foundation, is almost impossible to prove or disprove, because the Kodi platform strictly prohibits measuring and storing such data.

Regardless, it seems streaming piracy is now the new target of the creative industry, and Kodi appears to be at the frontlines of the new war. Just last month, the MPAA, along with Amazon and Netflix, sued a maker of a Kodi powered media box that had bundled piracy add-ons with their box.

Unusual experiment reveals the power of non-mainstream media

Scholars found that small media outlets have a big effect on Twitter discussions.

Pundits and activists have long blamed the "mainstream media" for having an outsized effect on public perceptions. Whatever side of the political spectrum you're on, some people say, it seems as if large media outlets like the New York Times or FOX News exert too much power over the national conversation. Ideas from non-mainstream media, according to this logic, get drowned out. But a new long-term study reveals that small media outlets have a far greater effect on public discussions than anyone realized.

To be more precise, it only takes three or more stories from small news outlets covering the same topic to make discussions of that topic go up by 62.7 percent on Twitter.

It took a group of Harvard researchers five years to reach the conclusion. They did it by tracking the effects of stories covered by 48 small media outlets, measuring how they affected conversations on Twitter. Harvard political scientist Gary King and his colleagues explain in the journal Science that they honed in on 11 broad topics in public policy, ranging from refugees and race to food policy and domestic energy production.

CEO who presided over Mt. Gox’s collapse could end up with massive profits

Creditors to be paid out at April 2014’s ~$440 per Bitcoin, not Nov. 2017’s ~$6,500.

Despite the fact that he oversaw the period when Mt. Gox went from the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange to a bankrupt and damaged company, CEO Mark Karpelès could stand to profit hundreds of millions of dollars.

According to The Wall Street Journal, because the value of claims by people who had bitcoins stored at the Tokyo-based site are calculated in the April 2014 exchange rate between bitcoins and Japanese yen, those creditors may miss out on Bitcoin’s meteoric rise over the last year.

Karpelès is currently on trial on embezzlement charges in Japan. He's also the CEO of Tibanne, the company that now "mostly owns" Mt. Gox, and has a cache of 200,000 bitcoins according to WSJ. So if that pool ends up being used to pay out claims, creditors fear Karpelès may get to do so at 2014 rates instead of 2017 rates.
