T-Mobile agrees to stop claiming its network is faster than Verizon’s

Verizon wins ruling as T-Mobile’s use of crowdsourced speed tests is criticized.

T-Mobile USA has agreed to stop claiming its 4G LTE network is faster than Verizon Wireless', after the advertising industry's self-regulation body agreed with Verizon that T-Mobile's claim was unsupported.

The National Advertising Division (NAD) "recommended T-Mobile discontinue claims that it has the fastest 4G LTE network" and "also recommended that T-Mobile discontinue claims that its LTE network is 'newer' than Verizon's and that Verizon's LTE network is 'older,'" the Advertising Self-Regulatory Council said in an announcement Thursday.

T-Mobile agreed to comply with the NAD's recommendations, the announcement said. The ruling and T-Mobile's agreement to stop the disputed claims came after Verizon filed a challenge with the industry body. The self-regulatory system helps advertisers settle disputes without lawsuits and avoid stricter government regulation.

‘New “DeUHD” Tool Can Rip UHD Blu-Ray Discs’

A Russian company has released a Windows application that claims to rip UHD Blu-ray discs. The tool, dubbed ‘DeUHD,’ currently supports a limited number of drives and discs but is the first commercially available application to decrypt AACS 2.0 protected discs.

While there is no shortage of pirated films on the Internet, Ultra-high-definition content is often hard to find.

Not only are the file sizes enormous, but the protection is better than that deployed to regular content. Protected with strong AACS 2 encryption, it has long been one of the last bastions movie pirates had yet to breach.

This year there have been some major developments on this front, as full copies of UHD Blu-Ray Discs began to leak online. While it remained unclear how these were ripped, it was a definite milestone.

Now, there’s another breakthrough to report on. Russian company Arusoft has released a new commercially available tool called DeUHD which claims the ability to rip UHD Blu-ray discs.

“It is a tool to decrypt the UHD disc, like remove the AACS 2.0 protections,” the company states.

“DeUHD works in the background to automatically enable read access of the contents of a 4K UHD movie as soon as it’s inserted into the drive. It is also able to rip the disc to your hard disk as a folder or an ISO file, and then you can play them on your UHD player.”

The software works on recent Windows operating systems and is compatible with a limited number of UHD drives, including the LG WH16NS60 and Buffalo BRUHD-PU3.

The list of supported UHD Blu-rays is not exhaustive but includes a few dozen popular movies such as Arrival, John Wick: Chapter 2, Passengers, and Terminator Genisys. New titles are added on a regular basis, the developers promise.

DeUHD in action

TorrentFreak reached out to a source who tested the software with the supported LG BE16NU50 drive and three of the listed movies, but this didn’t work. This could mean that there are still some issues that need to be ironed out.

The developers are adamant that their software works as advertised, and have published a detailed guide on their website.

It’s not clear whether AACS 2.0 has indeed been cracked. The DeUHD team informed MyCE, who first reported on the tool, that they see it as such. In any case, the tool promises to successfully decrypt UHD Blu-ray discs, which is quite an achievement by itself.

That said, the DeUHD software doesn’t come cheap. A lifetime license is currently selling for $199. Those who want to try it first to see if it works for them can download a free trial. This trial is limited to decrypting roughly 10 minutes of a single disc.

Interestingly, a handful of new UHD releases were published by the group HDRINVASION in recent days, all titles that are also supported by DeUHD. Whether there’s a connection between the two is unknown at this point.

The Atlantic just finished its busiest hurricane month on record

The United States was already on edge about the Atlantic tropics when the month of September began, as Hurricane Harvey had just slogged through Texas and delivered devastating inland flooding to a large stretch of the state, including the fourth largest city in the country. Harvey may end up ranking as the costliest hurricane on US record, although damages haven't been officially determined.

But this Category 4 hurricane was but a prelude for what was to come in September. Five hurricanes—Irma, Jose, Katia, Lee, and Maria—would form. Four would become major hurricanes. Two of the storms, Irma and Maria, would reach Category 5 status and bring widespread devastation, especially in the Caribbean islands, and to a lesser extent in the mainland United States.

iPhone 8 Plus handset reportedly cracks open while charging

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models haven't been available long, but a couple of users have reportedly experienced major problems. According to a 9to5Mac report, a Taiwanese iPhone 8 Plus owner claims her device split open while charging, and a Japanese owner of an iPhone 8 Plus claims the handset arrived already cracked open. The tech outlet ifeng includes images of the Taiwanese owner's device in its report.

In the case of the Taiwanese owner, the iPhone 8 Plus was reportedly being charged when the front panel began to bulge and eventually lifted from the body of the device. The owner was reportedly using the Apple-supplied cable and plug adaptor. The incident occurred after five days of ownership, and the device was returned to the original carrier afterward. That device has now reportedly been returned to Apple for investigation.

The Japanese owner tweeted out photos of his iPhone 8 Plus, which he claims came already with a bulging, cracked front panel. According to 9to5Mac's report, Apple is unaware of this type of damage occurring on any other iPhone 8 or 8 Plus.
