iPhones and iPad will get iOS 11 update on September 19

Here come the Files app, a new Siri voice, and iPad “drag and drop” technology.

CUPERTINO, Calif.—At WWDC, Apple showed off features and cool tricks coming to iPhone and iPad in iOS 11. At today's event on its new campus, the company announced iOS 11 will be out of beta and available to the public on September 19.

iOS 11 won't fundamentally change the look and feel of your iPhone, but it does offer some exciting updates. One of the most useful new features is the Files app, which organizes all of the files on your iPhone as well as files stored in other locations such as iCloud and Dropbox. It almost mimics the Finder window on macOS, and that offers a convenient new way to store, organize, and access all the information on your handset. Developers have access to the Files app, too, so individual apps will show up in the Files app as their own folders, making it easier to move documents in between programs.

The Control Center also has a new look in iOS 11 with new bubble-like icons that you can move around and customize. Much like you can do with Widgets, you'll be able to choose the tools you want to have in the Control Center. Since the Control Center can take up the entire display, you're not as restricted in the number of tools you include either. Many features will be accessible via 3D Touch in the Control Center as well.

Apple’s radically different smartphone is called the iPhone X

Bezel-free design maximizes screen space, and hides some fancy features.

CUPERTINO, Calif.—At the first event held in the new Steve Jobs Theater on its new campus, Apple announced the new iPhone X handset today. The original iPhone turned 10 this year, and in true Apple fashion, the company celebrated by debuting a totally new iPhone that shows how far the device has come in its tenure.

As soon as Apple announced the iPhone X, its deviations from the traditional iPhone design were remarkable. The iPhone X (called the "iPhone Ten") has an edge-to-edge OLED, "Super Retina" (2436x1125, 458ppi) display on the front of the handset. As rumors suggested, it's made of glass on both its front and back, with a layer of stainless steel in between. It measures 5.8-inches on the diagonal on its front, putting it in line with the "Plus" iPhone models. The design was made to be water- and dust-resistant and it comes in two finishes: space gray and silver, going back to Apple roots.

Apple launches new iPhone 8 smartphone, skipping traditional iPhone 7 “S” models

The glass phone is back, and wireless charging comes to an Apple handset.

CUPERTINO, Calif.—At the first event held in the new Steve Jobs Theater on its new campus, Apple announced the new iPhone 8 handset today. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone, and Apple celebrated by doing something very uncharacteristic: skipping the “S” iteration of the iPhone 7 and pushing full-steam ahead with the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models.

The iPhone 8’s design is based off the iPhone 7 in that it doesn’t look incredibly different than Apple’s previous handsets. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are similar in size to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, but they have new glass fronts and backs that nod to the glass construction of the iPhone 4. Both models are made with aerospace-grade aluminum and the glass is reinforced by steel. Each model has a Retina display as well for improved color accuracy, wide color gamut, and True Tone technology.

Glass adds a slick, if fragile, look to the new smartphone, but it also allows for wireless charging. This has been a long-rumored feature in the new iPhones and Apple confirmed today that the iPhone 8 models will support Qi wireless charging with an optional charging pad. The iPhone 8 models use induction-based wireless charging, which is the same technology using to charge the Apple Watch.

(Apple Watch, Apple)

Apple’s new TV set-top box will play 4K content, sport faster processor

It’s the biggest update the Apple TV has seen in years—starts at $179, ships September 22.

Samuel Axon

CUPERTINO, Calif.—Aside from iPhones, the Apple TV was the most rumored device ahead of Apple's September event. Today, the company announced a new Apple TV set-top box that's in-line with most previous speculations: it can play 4K and HDR content, thanks to support from a faster processor.

4K output may not be enticing for those who don't consume 4K content already. Movies and TV shows filmed in 4K are not the majority yet, but companies have been working to produce more of this high-quality video content. Netflix has over 100 titles streaming in 4K—but, as with any 4K content, you need a 4K-capable display to watch it.
