Net neutrality comment deadline is tomorrow; 21.9 million comments in so far

If you haven’t told the FCC what you think yet, now is the time.

You have until midnight Eastern Time tomorrow night (Wednesday) to file comments on the Federal Communications Commission plan to deregulate broadband service and roll back net neutrality rules.

There are 21.9 million fillings on the FCC's "Restoring Internet Freedom" docket already, blowing away the four million received before the 2015 decision that imposed net neutrality rules. Many comments are apparently from spam bots and form letters, but Chairman Ajit Pai's proposal to undo net neutrality rules has received massive attention.

The deadline for initial comments passed on July 17, and the deadline for replies to initial comments was supposed to pass on August 16. But the FCC extended the deadline by two weeks to August 30, partially granting a request for an eight-week extension from net neutrality advocates.

Google ARCore brings augmented reality to Android phones (no Tango hardware required)

Augmented Reality has been around for almost as long as smartphone cameras have existed. An app called Layar allowed you to point your phone at real-world objects and see virtual signs overlayed on them in real-time way back in 2009. But things have really started to get good in the past few years. Google’s Tango […]

How NASA’s Johnson Space Center is riding out the hurricane

The Johnson Space Center is still managing ISS mission control and Webb testing.

Surrounded by rising floodwaters, a skeleton crew at NASA’s Johnson Space Center is keeping the lights on for the International Space Station.

About 125 people are riding out Harvey’s devastating flood on-site at Johnson Space Center, or JSC. Those on-site include the ISS Mission Control team, the support team for the James Webb Space Telescope (which is currently at JSC for testing), and the JSC Recovery Team, which has the task of dealing with the storm and its impacts.

“Current work focuses on supporting critical operations, riding out the storm, and addressing minor issues such as fixing leaks and keeping drains open, as they arise,” said a NASA representative, working from home due to the flooding, in an e-mail.

Absolver hides its depth and beauty amid obtuse design

A complex, multiplayer martial arts fantasy needs better tutorials to match.

Enlarge / Even how to progress from one place to the next isn't well explained...

Absolver is a game that wants to be very, very many things. I'm just not sure all of those things mesh together very well.

At times, Absolver is a numbers-and-technique-heavy martial arts game. Other times, it's a serendipitous multiplayer get-together, like Journey. At others still, Absolver is an obtuse single-player adventure in the vein of Dark Souls—complete with loose lore teased out by item descriptions and transient NPCs.

It starts with your custom-created character receiving a mask from a... ghost, or something? Then you start hitting people. To be fair, Absolver bills itself as a multiplayer game first and a single-player game second. It's just jarring to be dropped into the complex game with so very little instruction.

Uber to stop tracking customers after ride is over

Uber app was programmed to monitor riders for five minutes after trip was done.

Uber is turning off a surveillance feature that enabled the ride-hailing company to track customers even after their rides had ended.

The company last year began tracking customers from the time they requested a ride until five minutes after it was over. The surveillance strategy, Uber said at the time, would allow Uber to analyze whether people were being dropped off and picked up properly—like on the correct side of the street.

That five minutes of post-ride monitoring is being discontinued first with an update to the iOS app this week and soon for Android devices.

Renowned Kodi Addon Developer MetalKettle Calls it Quits

MetalKettle, one of the most famous Kodi addon developers of recent times, has called it quits. Citing concerns over the current legal environment, ‘MK’ says he considered what would happen if he found himself targeted by lawyers. Not wanting to take any more risks, he says he’ll concentrate on being a husband and father instead.

After dominating the piracy landscape for more than a decade, BitTorrent now shares the accolades with web streaming. The latter is often easier to understand for novices, which has led to its meteoric rise.

Currently, software like Kodi grabs most of the headlines. The software is both free and legal but when it’s augmented with third-party addons, it’s transformed into a streaming piracy powerhouse. As a result, addon developers and distributors are coming under pressure these days.

Numerous cases are already underway, notably against addon repository TVAddons and the developer behind third-party addon ZemTV. Both are being sued in the United States by Dish Networks but the case filed against TVAddons in Canada is the most controversial. It’s already proven massively costly for its operator, who has been forced to ask the public for donations to keep up the fight.

With this backdrop of legal problems for prominent players, it’s no surprise that other people involved in the addon scene are considering their positions. This morning brings yet more news of retirement, with one of the most respected addon developers and distributors deciding to call it a day.

Over the past three to four years, the name MetalKettle has become synonymous not only with high-quality addons but also the MetalKettle addon repository, which was previously a leading go-to location for millions of Kodi users.

But now, ‘thanks’ to the increased profile of the Kodi addon scene, the entire operation will shrink away to avoid further negative attention. (Statement published verbatim)

“Over the past year or so Kodi has become more mainstream and public we’ve all seen the actions of others become highlighted legally, with authorities determined to target 3rd party addons making traction. This has eventually caused me to consider ‘what if?’ – the result of which never ends well in my mind,” MetalKettle writes.

“With all this said I have decided to actively give up 3rd party addon development (at least for the time being) and concentrate on being a husband and father.”

The news that MetalKettle will now fall silent will be sad news for the Kodi scene, after hosting plenty of addons over the years including UK Turks, UKTV Again, Xmovies8, Cartoons8, Toonmania, TV Mix, Sports Mix, Live Mix, Watch1080p, and MovieHut, to name just a few.

The distribution of these addons and others ultimately placed MetalKettles on the official Kodi repository blacklist, banned for providing access to premium content without authorization.

More recently, however, MetalKettle joined the Colossus Kodi repository but it seems likely that particular alliance will now come to an end. Whether other developers will take on any of the existing MetalKettle addons is unclear.

Signing off to his fans during the past few hours, MetalKettle (MK) thanked everyone for their support over the past several years.

“It’s much appreciated and made this all worthwhile,” MK said.

While plenty of people contribute to the Kodi scene, it can be quite a hostile environment for those who step out of line. The same cannot be said of MK, as evidenced by the outpouring of gratitude from his associates on Twitter.

Google’s ARCore brings augmented reality to millions of Android devices

Forget Project Tango, ARCore covers most AR use cases with no special hardware required.

Google

Google is taking a second swing at augmented reality with a new SDK called "ARCore." The SDK is available for download today (Google should have a blog post here) along with a set of ARCore demos. After experimenting with Project Tango, an AR initiative launched in 2014 that loaded a smartphone up with custom sensors, Google's AR reboot brings most of that functionality to regular old Android phones through the magic of software. If you're drawing mental comparisons to Apple's ARKit, you're on the right track.

We're not just working off the blog post here, as I was lucky enough to have this project explained to me by some of the Googlers in charge of it. Let's start with the basics.
