Sony legal quest to remove its leaked developer’s kit from the Web

Effort appears to be squashing leak discussion and homebrew SDKs as well.

Sony appears to be using copyright law in an attempt to remove all traces of a leaked PlayStation 4 Software Development Kit (PS4 SDK) from the Web. That effort also seems to have extended in recent days to the forced removal of the mere discussion of the leak and the posting of a separate open source, homebrew SDK designed to be used on jailbroken systems.

The story began a few weeks ago, when word first hit that version 4.5 of the PS4 SDK had been leaked online by a hacker going by the handle Kromemods. These SDKs are usually provided only to authorized PS4 developers inside development kits. The SDKs contain significant documentation that, once made public, can aid hackers in figuring out how to jailbreak consoles, create and install homebrew software, and enable other activities usually prohibited by the hardware maker (as we've seen in the wake of previous leaks of PlayStation 3 SDKs).

While you can still find reference to the version 4.5 SDK leak on places like Reddit and MaxConsole, threads discussing and linking to those leaked files on sites like GBATemp and PSXhax, for example, appear to have been removed after the fact. Cached versions of those pages show links (now defunct) to download those leaked files, along with a message from KromeMods to "Please spread this as much as possible since links will be taken down... We will get nowhere if everything keeps private; money isn't everything."

Elon Musk has been talking about The Boring Company, his tunnel-digging endeavor, for months now. Today, he tweeted, “Just received verbal govt approval for The Boring Company to build an underground NY-Phil-Balt-DC Hyperloop. NY-DC in 29 mins.”

Ars has reached out to Musk directly and to The Boring Company’s media contact to get more details on the “verbal govt approval.”

Ars also contacted the US Department of Transportation, and a White House spokesperson noted, “We have had promising conversations to date, are committed to transformative infrastructure projects, and believe our greatest solutions have often come from the ingenuity and drive of the private sector.”

The KickassTorrents Shutdown, One Year Later

Exactly one year ago, KickassTorrents was shut down following a criminal investigation by the United States. While the site no longer exists in its former glory, the name is still around. Several original staffers remain dedicated to carrying the torch, for example. Today we take a look at KAT’s past, present, and the future.

Exactly one year ago, on July 20th 2016, the torrent community was in dire straits.

Polish law enforcement officers had just apprehended Artem Vaulin, the alleged founder of KickassTorrents (KAT) at a local airport.

The arrest was part of a U.S. criminal case which also listed two other men as key players. At the time, KAT was the most-used torrent site around, so the authorities couldn’t have hit a more prominent target.

The criminal case was the end of the torrent site, but also the start of a lengthy court battle for the defendants.

To this day, Artem remains in Poland. He’s currently out on bail awaiting the final decision on the extradition request from the United States, while the other two defendants remain at large. If he is extradited, it’s expected that an extensive court battle will follow.

Although the original KickassTorrents is website no longer around, the ‘brand’ is still very much alive. Soon after the site went down several KAT copies and mirrors appeared. For many, however, the original site is still dearly missed.

The most prominent effort to create a replacement is the product of a group of well-known staffers from the original site. They began to rebuild the community by launching a forum for estranged KAT users last summer. A few months later they expanded their KATcr project to a full blown torrent site, mimicking the looks of the original.

Today, one year after it all started, we reach out to the new KATcr team to hear about their memories and future plans.

“Looking back it was shocking and disheartening for everyone, we know it happens but didn’t expect our ship to sink like that. We’ve written history there though, made many friends, learned a hell of a lot, and achieved so much,” Mr.Gooner recalls.

“It’s thanks to the original site and the loyal, supporting users that we were able to rebuild our ship and set sail again,” he adds.

While KATcr was able to put up a forum within days, getting fully organized was a more complex operation. Several former admins came on board, but without access to the original code or database, it took a few months to build a KAT replacement from scratch.

KATcr today

The site eventually relaunched as a full-blown torrent site last December. Although it doesn’t get as much traffic as the original KAT, many former users have found their way ‘back.’

“Minus a few hiccups and various other minor issues most new sites experience, traffic is increasing at a good rate. We are continuously improving and our name is well and truly out there now. The door is open and everyone is welcomed with open arms, we know all too well what it’s like to lose our home,” Mr.Gooner notes.

A lot of people would think twice before attempting to fill the shoes of a site that was hunted down by the US Department of Justice. However, the KATcr team believes that they are acting within the boundaries of the law.

“As far as we are concerned we operate to every letter of the law,” Mr.Gooner states in full confidence.

In the future, the site hopes to expand its userbase even further. Although it’s now been a year since the original KAT was pulled offline, the KATcr team prefers to look ahead, instead of dwelling in the past. There are some people who are still missed, but other than that, the focus is forward.

“I mostly miss those that are no longer with us. But rather than living in the past, the present day and the future is what matters, so we don’t tend to look back to miss anything else,” Mr.Gooner says.

Looking ahead is what alleged KickassTorrents operator Artem Vaulin will do as well. His concerns are different though.

The most pressing question that has to be answered in the near future is whether Poland will extradite him to the United States. Through his lawyers, he previously floated the idea of surrendering to the US voluntarily to “resolve” the pending charges, but only under the right conditions.

Meanwhile, he remains in Poland on bail.

Olive Garden says blog needs OK to publish phrase “Olive Garden.” It doesn’t.

“If you are asking me to simply add TradeMark® Symbols™ I must also decline.”

On Wednesday, a blogger in Southern California wrote the most epic response to a pasta-related legal demand letter that we have ever seen.

The blogger in question, Vincent "Vino" Malone, is the proprietor of AllOfGarden.com, a website that chronicles a quest to eat as much Olive Garden pasta as possible (via the Never Ending Pasta Pass).

Malone documents his travails online with detailed photos, often in brief form, such as: "My mind has actually come around completely on the garlic alfredo sauce since its original launch in 2015. Perhaps the recipe has changed, or maybe my palate has been deadened by years of conspicuous consumption, but the flavor is actually fairly mild and the grated cheese adds a bit of depth to the traditionally bland alfredo."

Tillerson cuts high-profile cyberdiplomacy office in State Dept. reorg

Move demotes US cyber diplomats as part of department overhaul.

On the heels of the resignation of State Department Cyber Coordinator Chris Painter—the top diplomat for negotiations on setting norms for nations' behavior in "cyberspace"—a State Department spokesperson confirmed that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is moving toward shutting down the department's Office for the Coordination of Cyber Issues.

The office, set up by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the Obama administration, has taken the lead in negotiations with other nations on cybersecurity policy issues. It also works out how existing international law applies to hacking, cyber-espionage, and other state-directed activities on the Internet. The Cyber Coordinator, who leads the office, has reported directly to the secretary of state. As the head of the office, Chris Painter—a career Department of Justice employee who was detailed to the State Department for the post six years ago—took part in multiple multinational negotiations resulting in agreements to halt economic electronic espionage against other countries' companies.  Among these was an agreement reached by the Group of 20 leading world economic powers (G20) in November of 2015.

In a post to the Cipher Brief, Jason Healey— a senior research scholar at Columbia University’s School for International and Public Affairs, and a visiting scholar at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University—said that Painter's departure in itself was a blow to the US' leading role in setting the world cybersecurity diplomatic agenda. "Those that will suffer most [from Painter's departure] are likely to be American citizens, and indeed netizens in whatever country they live, who depend on an open, free, and secure Internet" Healy wrote. "Painter has been a tireless advocate for these goals—American goals—around the world, and the best days of American cyberdiplomacy may be behind us."

Jeff Bezos dons sunglasses, says look at my big rocket factory

Clearly, the Amazon founder is enjoying this whole rocket thing.

Over the last several months Blue Origin has begun to reveal details about plans to develop a large orbital rocket called New Glenn. The 82-meter-tall booster will have the capacity to lift 45 tons to low Earth orbit and an impressive 13 tons to geostationary transfer orbit. The company plans for the technology to be fully reusable.

The New Glenn rocket is so big it will be too large to produce at the company's existing facilities in Kent, Washington. So Blue Origin intends to build the BE-4 rocket engine in Huntsville, Alabama and assemble the New Glenn booster in Florida. The company has evidently made substantial progress on the new rocket facility in Florida, as Jeff Bezos showcased Thursday in a video posted to Instagram.

"Manufacturing facility for the heavy-lift New Glenn launch vehicle is coming along nicely," Bezos wrote in the posting. The short video ends with a close-up of Bezos seated in an outdoor chair on top of the factory, chilling in shades, holding a sign that says, "Rocket Factory Coming Soon."

Clover Trail systems won’t get Windows 10 Creators Update, ever

GPU issues block new Windows versions, but security updates will be provided.

Systems using Intel's Clover Trail Atom processors and running Windows 10 won't ever receive the Creators Update, or any major Windows 10 updates in future. But in an exception to its normal Windows 10 support policy, Microsoft has said that it will provide security updates to those systems until January 2023.

We wrote earlier this week about the tricky situation of the Clover Trail systems. Those machines shipped with Windows 8 and 8.1 were due to receive software support until 2023. However, the systems were also eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 10. But to receive security fixes on Windows 10, you have to keep pace with the periodic regular major upgrades that Microsoft makes to that operating system. Each of these named releases is only supported for 18 months, after which you have to upgrade, or else you're cut off from security fixes.

This is a problem for the Clover Trail machines, because those systems are prevented from installing and using the Windows 10 Creators Update, leaving them stuck on last year's Anniversary Update. Support, including security fixes, for the Anniversary Update is due to end in early 2018. As such, it appeared that upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 has taken Clover Trail systems from being supported until 2023, to supported until 2018, a five-year regression.
