Canceled Halo Chronicles is finally detailed in epic Halo oral history

Also, Peter Jackson totally made a working Warthog, and a Bungie staffer crashed it.

The Halo game series received its first-ever comprehensive oral history on Tuesday, courtesy of Vice Waypoint contributor Steve Haske. The post includes a whopping 35,000 words on the series' history told by 16 major members of the Bungie and Halo development teams.

It's a juicy warts-and-all read, which I recommend whether you're a Halo fan or not, but it also includes the most detail ever revealed about the biggest cancellations in the series' history: the game Halo Chronicles and its attached Peter Jackson film.

Chronicles began life for Bungie as a contractual obligation, which former Bungie music producer Marty O'Donnell described as one of "three buckets" (the others being Halo 3 and Halo Reach). The game would go on to be co-produced by Jackson's new video game studio, Wingnut Interactive, with key Bungie staffers helping with planning, writing, and prototyping.

The father of Android builds a smartphone: The “Essential Phone” is official

Essential slices out a chunk of screen to make room for the front camera.

Essential

2017 is the year of the slim-bezel smartphone, and the latest to enter the fray is Andy Rubin's "Essential" smartphone startup. Today the company announced the "Essential Phone," a flagship Snapdragon 835 device headed to the US for $699.

You certainly can't accuse the Essential Phone of being boring. It has possibly the strangest implementation of a front-facing camera we've ever seen; the device is made of ceramic and titanium; there's a magnetic modular connector on the back; and there isn't a single logo on the entire device.

Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google lobby against Texas “bathroom” bill

“Discrimination is wrong and it has no place in Texas or anywhere in our country.”

Executives from some of the globe's leading technology firms are demanding that Texas not adopt "discriminatory" bathroom legislation. On the table in Texas is a law similar to one enacted—and later partially repealed—in North Carolina. The tech companies have aligned themselves with critics of the bill who believe the legislation is unfair to the transgender community.

"As large employers in the state, we are gravely concerned that any such legislation would deeply tarnish Texas' reputation as open and friendly to businesses and families," the companies wrote Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. "Our ability to attract, recruit and retain top talent, encourage new business relocations, expansions and investment, and maintain our economic competitiveness would all be negatively affected."

Pending Texas Senate legislation would prohibit transgender people in Texas from using restrooms matching their gender identities. The House on Sunday passed its own bill that would apply the bathroom limitations solely at schools.

Theranos directors trusted Elizabeth Holmes more than their own eyes

When employees and media started raising concerns, the board did nothing.

When former US Secretary of State George Shultz underwent a Theranos blood test, it involved a standard vein draw—not the company’s proprietary finger prick blood collection. Though at the time Theranos claimed to only use its proprietary testing, the discrepancy didn’t bother Shultz, then a member of the company’s board of directors. In fact, according to newly unsealed court documents reported by The Wall Street Journal, he continued to believe that the company could and did use its own technology for all blood testing.

“There would be some, you know, excuse about why they needed to take a venous draw for him, but you know, for everyone else it was a finger prick. And, he continued to buy into that,” Shultz’s grandson, Tyler, a former Theranos employee and whistleblower, testified.

Regulators and media reports revealed last year that Theranos used commercial equipment for most of its testing and had critical technical problems with its own technology.

Danish ISPs Stand Up Against ‘Mafia-Like’ Copyright Trolls

Following a recent victory in Norway, Internet provider Telenor now hopes to put the brakes on copyright trolling efforts in Denmark as well. The company is backed by other ISPs and the local Telco Industry Organization, which notes that users must be protected from these “mafia-like” practices.

In recent years, file-sharers all across Europe have been threatened with lawsuits, if they don’t pay a significant settlement fee.

The process was pioneered in Germany where it turned into an industry by itself, and copyright holders later went after alleged pirates in the UK, Finland and elsewhere.

These so-called “copyright trolls” have also landed in Denmark, where the number of targeted Internet subscribers is growing at a rapid rate.

In 2015, rightsholders received permission from courts to obtain the personal details of 6,187 alleged BitTorrent pirates, based on their IP-addresses. A year later the number of accused subscribers increased by nearly 250 percent, to 21,163.

Local ISPs are not happy with this development and plan to fight it in court, Berlingske Business reports.

“We think there is a fundamental legal problem because the courts do not really decide what is most important: the legal security of the public or the law firms’ commercial interests,” Telenor’s Legal Director Mette Eistrøm Krüger says.

As is often the case in these type anti-piracy campaigns, the rightsholders prefer to settle out of court. Thus far, no named defendant has mounted a defense before a Danish judge.

“There was a verdict in one case, and this was a default judgment because the defendant didn’t show up,” Mette Eistrøm Krüger adds.

To stop the trolling efforts from getting out of hand, Telenor is now preparing to build a new case at the Frederiksberg Court, hoping to protect the identities of its subscribers.

This is not the first time Telenor has taken action against these anti-piracy efforts. The ISP did the same in Norway, with success. Last month the Norwegian Supreme Court threw out several troll cases due to a lack of evidence.

In Denmark, Telenor is supported by fellow Internet provider Telia, which says it will be more critical toward trolling efforts going forward.

The branch organization Telecommunications Industry in Denmark notes that other ISPs are backing Telenor’s efforts as well. The group’s director, Jakob Willer, describes the copyright trolling scheme as a “mafia-like” practice, which should be stopped.

“There is full support from the industry to Telenor to take this fight and protect customers against mafia-like practices,” Willer says.
