HTC Link is a smartphone-based VR headset with 6 degrees of freedom (for HTC U11… in Japan)

HTC makes smartphones. And HTC makes virtual reality systems. So you might think it would make sense for the company would develop its own phone-based VR headset to compete with Samsung’s Gear VR and Google’s Daydream View. And you’d be right, because HTC just introduced one. The new HTC Link headset is also one of the […]

People who were impersonated by anti-net neutrality spammers blast FCC

FCC should investigate and throw out fake comments, impersonation victims say.

Fourteen people who say their names and addresses were attached to anti-net neutrality comments without their permission have asked the Federal Communications Commission to notify other victims of the impersonation and remove fraudulent comments from the net neutrality docket.

As we've previously reported, there have been hundreds of thousands of identical comments that were ostensibly submitted to the FCC by ordinary people who hate the current net neutrality rules. But the comments appear to have been submitted by spam bots and attached to names drawn from data breaches.

People who say they were impersonated sent a letter to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai. In it, they wrote the following:

Diesel can’t catch a break: Lawsuits over emissions hit GM, Fiat Chrysler

Nitrogen oxide emissions are coming back for round two.

Two auto manufacturers are in legal crosshairs this week because of emissions from their diesel vehicles.

The US Department of Justice sued Fiat Chrysler of America (FCA) on Tuesday over 103,828 diesel Ram 1500s and Jeep Grand Cherokees. The DOJ claims that the cars contain “at least eight software-based features” to meddle with the cars’ emissions control systems.

And today, two plaintiffs have asked a judge to let them proceed with a class-action lawsuit against General Motors. They claim that 705,000 of the American carmaker’s diesel Silverado and Sierra HD trucks are giving off nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in excess of what a consumer would expect and what the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) legally allows.

First data from Juno shows strong magnetic field, massive polar storms

Unexpected features of gravity and magnetic fields provide new hints of interior.

It's hard to imagine that the Solar System's biggest planet, which provided Galileo with his first key astronomic observations, has a lot of secrets left 450 years later. Yet, despite countless hours spent peering through telescopes and numerous robotic visitors, there's a lot we still don't know about Jupiter. Most notably, we didn't even have a decent picture of the planet's poles, and we have little idea of what its interior might look like.

Thanks to the arrival of the Juno probe, however, that's starting to change. After just a few orbits, Juno has imaged both poles, tracked some of the dynamics of its atmosphere, and started providing evidence of what may lie at the crushing depths of the planet's interior.

Staring at the clouds

Earlier this year, Juno performed the closest approach to Jupiter ever made by human hardware, passing within 5,000km of Jupiter's cloud tops. That's about the same distance as that from the cloud tops to the core of the planet. Juno's highly elliptical orbit also takes it over both poles, allowing them to be imaged in greater detail than ever before. And every instrument on the probe managed to capture some data.

Republicans claim 1st Amendment right to send you robo-voicemails

GOP asks FCC to exempt direct-to-voicemail messages from robocall rules.

You might start getting many more voicemails if Republicans get their wish.

A marketing company called All About the Message recently petitioned the Federal Communications Commission for a ruling that would prevent anti-robocall rules from being applied to "the delivery of a voice message directly to a voicemail box" without ringing the recipient's phone. These ringless voicemails are already happening, but their legal status is unclear.

That petition was filed in March, and last week the Republican National Committee (RNC) asked the Federal Communications Commission to approve the petition. The petition asks the FCC "to declare that the delivery of a voice message directly to a voicemail box does not constitute a call that is subject to the Telephone Consumer Protection Act ('TCPA') and its implementing rules," the RNC wrote. "The RNC supports this clarification, which is consistent with the language of the TCPA."

No prison for Colombian biologist who uploaded scientist’s thesis to Scribd

“I have been cleared. I am innocent.”

A Colombian biologist was facing up to eight years in prison for sharing a scientist's thesis on the online documents portal Scribd. But the Electronic Frontier Foundation is reporting that Diego Gómez has been cleared of criminal copyright violations in a country that, unlike the US, has no broad fair-use defense to infringement allegations.

"After a long legal battle, Diego was able to breathe a sigh of relief today as he was cleared of the criminal charges that he faced for this harmless act of sharing scholarly research," the EFF announced. Thousands signed an EFF petition supporting Gómez. In 2011, he uploaded a master's thesis of another scientist, and a drawn-out legal saga in Colombia ensued. A judge in Bogotá found him innocent of the charges Wednesday.

"I have been cleared. I am innocent," Gómez said, according to Nature.
