Kodi Shuts Down DRM Rumors

The people behind the hugely popular open source media player, Kodi, has come out attacking the "fake news" surrounding the software's embrace of DRM.

Kodi has been under pressure in recent times over the availability of third party plug-ins that has allowed pirated content to be viewed via the software.

One way to fight the piracy association, according to Kodi, is to attract more legitimate content providers to sign up to the platform. But this would require Kodi to be able to interface with the DRM being used by apps like Netflix. But talks of Kodi and DRM have led to the spread of numerous news stories, some exaggerating the truth, while others simply ignore it. Some have even suggested the implementation of DRM is Kodi's way to crack down on piracy.

To clear the air, Kodi this week took to their blog again to clarify their stance, and they couldn't be clearer.

"Let's try again and make this crystal clear: Kodi is a free, open-source neutral software. Kodi will never, ever require DRM to work, nor will it ever be a locked software. Ever! Read that a couple more times for good measure," writes Kodi on their official blog.

Any DRM support would be for existing DRM in apps like Netflix, for Kodi to be able to interface with these existing systems to be able to support a Netflix plug-in, for example.

As for the availability of unwanted piracy plug-ins, Kodi says their position is clear. They will never prevent users from using Kodi in any way they like, including the use of piracy plug-ins, and they will not "condone, condemn, encourage or recommend any particular use of Kodi", whether these plug-ins contain DRM or not.

Microsoft 3Q17: Cloud, Office, Windows strong, Surface slumps

Phone revenue is basically wiped out.

(credit: Julien GONG Min)

In its third quarter of its 2017 financial year, Microsoft posted revenue of $22.1 billion, up 8 percent year-on-year, with an operating income of $5.6 billion, up 6 percent on a year ago, net income of $5.7 billion, up 28 percent, and earnings per share of $0.61, an increase of 30 percent over the same quarter a year ago.

As ever, Microsoft also offered alternative figures that book Windows 10 revenue up front instead of amortized over several years, and which hold exchange rates constant to remove the impact of rate fluctuations year-on-year (which gives some indication of year-to-year changes in actual sales transactions, if not of money in the bank). This quarter the currency differences are for the most part small, with an impact of only about 1 percent (the dollar was weaker than Microsoft expected), but Windows revenue deferral continues to be significant. Under these adjusted figures, revenue was $23.6 billion, up 7 percent, operating income was $7.1 billion, up 5 percent, net income was $5.7 billion, an increase of 16 percent, and earnings per share were $0.73, a 19 percent increase.

Microsoft currently has three reporting segments: Productivity and Business Processes (covering Office, Exchange, SharePoint, Skype, and Dynamics), Intelligent Cloud (including Azure, Windows Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio, and Enterprise Services), and More Personal Computing (covering Windows, hardware, and Xbox, as well as search and advertising).

Lawsuit: Fox News group hacked, surveilled, and stalked ex-host Andrea Tantaros

Lawsuit: After a sexual harassment claim, Fox News planted spyware on ex-host’s computer.

Andrea Tantaros claims that she was stalked and harassed by multiple Twitter accounts that were coordinated by Fox News executives after she filed a sexual harassment suit. Her new lawsuit also claims that Fox had her computer hacked for spying purposes. (credit: Twitter)

Comparing their actions to the plot this season on the Showtime series Homeland, an attorney for former Fox News host Andrea Tantaros has filed a complaint in federal court against Fox News, current and former Fox executives, Peter Snyder and his financial firm Disruptor Inc., and 50 "John Doe" defendants. The suit alleges that collective participated in a hacking and surveillance campaign against her.

Tantaros filed a sexual harassment suit against Roger Ailes and Fox News in August of 2016, after filing internal complaints with the company about harassment dating back to February of 2015. She was fired by the network in April of 2016, as Tantaros continued to press complaints against Fox News' then-Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, Bill O'Reilly, and others. Tantaros had informed Fox that she would be filing a lawsuit over the alleged sexual harassment.

Tantaros claims that as early as February of 2015, a group run out of a "black room" at Fox News engaged in surveillance and electronic harassment of her, including the use of "sock puppet" social media accounts to electronically stalk her. According to the lawsuit:

Ars Technica Live: Why it’s important to defend hackers, even the not nice ones

Lawyer Mark Jaffe has represented weev, Matthew Keys, and Deric Lostutter.

Ars Live #12, filmed by Chris Schodt and produced by Jennifer Hahn. (video link)

On June 13, 2017, Mark Jaffe is set to appear before the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco to argue on behalf of his client, journalist Matthew Keys. And at the most recent Ars Live event, Jaffe spoke to David Kravets and me about this case and broader issues around what it's like to defend accused hackers.

As Ars reported in August 2016, the 29-year-old journalist began his two-year sentence in Atwater, California, about 120 miles east of San Francisco. Earlier in 2016, Keys was convicted at trial under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), the notorious anti-hacking federal law that dates back to the 1980s. An effort to reform that law has languished in Congress. Keys told Ars, even post-conviction, that he did not hand over any login information that led to the 40-minute alteration of a Los Angeles Times headline in 2010. So Jaffe and Keys' other attorneys will reprise an argument that they made at trial: that Keys' alleged actions did not cause actual damage (the defaced article was quickly changed back), and therefore, Keys did not violate the CFAA.
