A survey of game developers has found that most aren't particularly interested in the mid-cycle hardware updates by Sony, namely the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One 'Scorpio'.

These mid-cycle updates improves the performance of the consoles, allowing developers to produce better looking games, while still maintaining compatibility with all previously released titles.

But according to the GDC's (Game Developers Conference) annual "state of the game industry" survey, a majority of game developers are still undecided on the benefits of a mid-cycle update (41% of respondents) or were at best neutral about it (36%).

The results of the survey, which polled more than 4,500 developers, found that only 18 percent felt this latest development was a positive one for the industry.

Many developers feared the creation of two tiers of game consoles could mean extra work and less certainty for developers, and could end up dividing the market.

But the majority simply "don't really know what to make of it", says GDC general manager Meggan Scavio.

The survey also revealed some other interesting facts about the state of the game industry. For example, more developers are now working on Android projects than on iOS projects (54% to 51%), for the first time since the survey was conducted five years ago.

Half of respondents also believed that Nintendo's new console, the Nintendo Switch, would be more popular than the Wii U.

Mozilla ditches the dinosaur, unveils new branding only a nerd could love

They really did go for “moz://a.”

The old Netscape browser had a dinosaur named Mozilla as its mascot and codename. When the browser was open sourced in 1998, it used the dinosaur's name and visage as its branding.

No longer. After a rebranding was announced in August, the final decision has now been revealed. The Mozilla Organization has a shiny new wordmark that spells out the word "mozilla" with a mix of letters and punctuation (written in a requisite custom font, named Zilla). A blog post describes how the new brand is meant to signal Mozilla's support for an open and accessible Web.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a similar treatment of the colon-slash-slash in youth-oriented TV shows to show just how with it and Internet-savvy a person or company is; a kind of nerd shibboleth. The whole thing feels like it would have been bold and clever in the early 1990s—an intellectual counterpart to the stupidity of Yahoo!'s embedded exclamation mark.

Nintendo’s Fire Emblem Heroes will launch on Android before iOS

Android version has a February launch date; iOS simply coming “soon.”

Nintendo's push towards smartphone gaming will continue on February 2 with the launch of Fire Emblem Heroes, a touch-only take on the company's longtime tactical RPG series—and possibly the company's most micro-transaction driven game yet.

Like Super Mario Run before it, Fire Emblem Heroes will have a period of platform exclusivity—but in a surprise twist, that exclusivity is reversed. Android users will get first crack at Heroes on that release date, while iOS users have been told their version is coming "soon." (For an estimate of how long the left-behind platform might have to wait, remember: Super Mario Run has yet to launch on Android over a month after its iOS release.) During this announcement, Nintendo did not mention Animal Crossing, the other series set to receive a smartphone port in the near future.
