Synaptics multi-factor tech combines fingerprint, facial recognition for secure logins

Synaptics multi-factor tech combines fingerprint, facial recognition for secure logins

Synaptics has been offering fingerprint sensor solutions for mobile devices for a while. But sometimes you want a little more assurance that only authorized people can unlock your phone, tablet, or notebook.

So now Synaptics is adding a multi-factor solution that combines a fingerprint reader and facial recognition.

If a device maker adopts the new platform, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use multi-factor biometric authentication, although doing so will probably make your device at least a little more secure.

Tempow streams smartphone audio to multiple Bluetooth speakers simultaneously

Tempow streams smartphone audio to multiple Bluetooth speakers simultaneously

Want to stream music to a wireless speaker? There’s no shortage of options. But if you want to stream to multiple speakers at the same time, there are fewer options… and they tend to either be rather expensive, or require a Chromecast Audio-like dongle.

French startup Tempow wants to change that. The company has developed a custom Bluetooth stack that lets you stream audio from a smartphone or other device to as many as 7 Bluetooth speakers or headphones at once.

Notch is a 3D motion tracking system you’ll actually want to use

Analyze your golf swing, place your whole body in a VR world, and more.

Video shot/edited by Jennifer Hahn. (video link)

LAS VEGAS—Smartwatches and wearables worn on the wrist may be convenient, but they can easily miss a lot of body movements. If you're a golfer, skater, swimmer, or the like, you move with more than just your wrist when you train or compete. The 3D motion tracking startup Notch is trying to fix this by capturing most of the movement missed by traditional trackers. The company just started shipping its Notch sensor pack that has six small, triangular sensors meant to be worn on different parts of the body in order to track and visualize the movement of the user in real-time.

At the center of Notch's technology are the sensors that weigh less than 10g each. Every sensor has an accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass inside. They snap into holsters on thin straps that you wear on various body parts, and these straps are very similar to heart rate monitoring chest straps, but with more elasticity so they can stretch and fit snugly to your body. When connected to the Notch smartphone app, users can pick a movement configuration (or create their own) to follow and the sensors will capture and map their movement to the app. You can wear up to 18 Notch sensors at once, but when you wear just two sensors, you can see your movements in real-time via the app. Movements captured with three or more sensors get stored in each sensor's internal memory to be synced the next time you open the app. Notch sensors can be worn up to six hours at a time before they need to go back into the carrying case to be recharged.

Sgnl shows off its watchband that turns your finger into a Bluetooth speaker

Sgnl shows off its watchband that turns your finger into a Bluetooth speaker

Sgnl is a watch strap with a component that vibrates in order to send sound waves through your skin. Attach the watch of your choice, strap it to your wrist, hold your finger to your ear, and you should be able to hear well enough to make a phone call using your finger as a sort of Bluetooth headset.

At least that’s the idea. In practice, I found the demo I received at CES 2016 to be a little disappointing.

Half a dozen Android phones support Google’s Daydream VR platform

Half a dozen Android phones support Google’s Daydream VR platform

When Google launched its Daydream virtual reality platform for Android phones, the only smartphone that officially supported the feature was the Google Pixel (and Pixel XL, if you want to call that two phones instead of one).

Now there are about half a dozen Daydream-ready phones, although not all of them are available for purchase yet.

Google announced late last year that the Moto Z was compatible with Daydream headsets like Google’s own Daydream VR or other upcoming Daydream headsets (more on that below).

Bixi brings gesture controls to smart devices

Bixi is a small device that lets you control other smart gadgets by moving your hands through the air. Want to adjust the volume of your speaker without touching it? Just move your hand toward or away from the Bixi sensor. Want to skip music tracks? Wave your hand left or right.

For the most part Bixi controls things that you could also interact with using a smartphone — it talks to your speakers, light bulbs, and other smart devices through your phone.
