Digital video sales have overtaken sales of content on physical media for the first time in the UK, according to new figures released by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

British households spent £6.3 billion in home entertainment, which includes video, music and video games, in the last year with spending on digital formats increasing rapidly.

For digital video, which include subscription streaming services like Netflix, sales increased by more than 20 percent to £1.3bn, compared to sales on physical media which fell by more than £150m to £943m.

Growth in digital video sales was largely driven by streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon, with an estimated quarter of British households now having a Netflix account.

Overall, video sales increased by 2.2 percent.

The revival of the music industry continues apace with revenue growing at 4.6 percent in 2016. Again, streaming led the way and more than helped to make up for the continued losses in CD sales. While the music industry is recovering, revenue figures are still at just over half of what it used to be during the height of the CD days, in 2001.

Video gaming sales saw a 2.9 percent growth, and with £3bn in revenue, it is now nearly half of all home entertainment revenue. This is the only sector that seems to not have been affected by the digital evolution.

Responding to the latest figures, ERA chief executive Kim Bayley highlighted the importance of investing in innovation in order to not be left behind by the digital evolution.

"To have added over £1bn in new revenues in just four years is an incredible achievement. To put it another way, take away today’s digital services and the entertainment market would be barely a third the size it is today," said Bayley.

Battle of The Bots! ‘Dubious’ Pirate Sites Trigger ‘Bogus’ Takedowns

Anti-piracy enforcement on the Internet is largely run by automated ‘bots’ which scour the websites for infringing content, firing millions of takedown notices in response. At the same time, there are also ‘machines’ that try to profit from piracy, generating dubious search results in order to lure pirates in. Is this the future of the web?

robotPirate sites come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from torrent indexes, through streaming portals, to MP3 download sites.

Since it’s not always easy to get visitors, some of these sites employ some dubious tricks to draw an audience. By using machine generated pages filled with complete nonsense, for example.

Let’s take this “ShareMP3.link” page for example. At first sight, it appears to be a regular MP3 download portal, offering music from popular artists. However, it does more than that.

In fact, the site offers a result for every search term, generating pages on the fly. Whether it’s for “TorrentFreak,” “sdfasgf56u” or “Pizzagate,” there’s always an MP3 available

This results in interesting pages such as the following, offering the latest TorrentFreak music.

tfdownload

Or what about this page, with some of the latest Twittergate and Pizzagate tunes ready for download?

twitter-pizza

These and many other similar sites appear to grab content from external sources such as YouTube, regardless of whether it’s actual music. In addition to confusing the public, they are also triggering bots at some takedown companies.

The Twittergate / Pizzagate page mentioned earlier was actually targeted in a recent notice sent by AudioLock for a completely unrelated artist named “靳松”.

While the odd name is likely an encoding issue, the link and many others listed in the complaint have little to do with it. Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident either as we can easily spot several other mistakes for “pizzagate” or “trump putin,” for example.

So why are these pages flagged as being ‘pirate’ then? Well, these type of sites generally list random links to other keyword searches on their download pages, which may at one point have linked to an infringing term. Still, the identified page itself is something entirely different.

In addition, takedowns may also be triggered because a keyword is similar to one used by the artist in question, such as the band “New Order” in the takedown notice below.

trumpputin

Making matters worse, the whole situation might be self-reinforcing at times. That is, when the DMCA bots search for something that is then automatically generated, this likely creates more pages with the same results and more takedowns.

Luckily, the public is largely kept away from this battle. They are just machines fighting each other in a perpetual and utterly useless war.

Copyright holders, however, might want to reconsider whether this is how they want to target piracy on the Internet. After all, they are the ones paying the bills for these dubious practices.

Closer look at the 2nd-gen NVIDIA Shield TV

Closer look at the 2nd-gen NVIDIA Shield TV

NVIDIA’s second-gen Shield TV has the same processor, memory, and storage as the original. But it comes in a body that’s 40 percent smaller and comes in a $199 bundle that includes the Shield, a remote control, and a game controller. The first generation model shipped without the remote, which needed to be purchased separately.

The new Shield is up for pre-order and ships on January 16th. If you already have a first-gen model, you might not feel the need to upgrade though.

Hackers unlock NES Classic, upload new games via USB cable

It’s not as simple as drag-and-drop, but no screwdriver or hardware mods needed.

Enlarge / Battletoads on the NES Classic Edition? If you're willing to take a risk via modding, you too could add this and other games to your own little system. (credit: ARCADERU)

If you managed to get your hands on an NES Classic Edition this holiday season, you may already be tired of the 30 classic games pre-installed on the system by now. Nintendo has made clear that the tiny replica NES will not officially receive new games, especially with no WiFi protocol to download them. But that hasn't stopped budding hackers from scoffing at Nintendo's claims and adding games their own way.

This week saw separate hackers in Japan and Russia figure out soft-mod solutions to adding new games to the NES Classic. This means you don't need to grab a screwdriver or a soldering iron to mod yours.

According to the whiz kids at Reddit's NESClassicMods community, the solution won't work until you've created a save file in Super Mario Bros' first slot. (Chances are, you've already done this just by playing the game, since creating game saves is so easy with this system.) Once you've done that, connect your NES Classic Edition to a computer via a micro-USB cable, then boot the NES in "FEL" mode. This is done by holding down the system's reset button while pushing down the power button from a powered-off state. While you're booting, you should also run a "sunxi-FEL" interface on your computer. (An open-source version of compatible "USBBoot" software can be found here.)

It’s official: US election systems designated as critical

Move comes after US says Russian hackers attempted to influence 2016 election.

On Friday, US Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson designated election systems to be part of the nation's critical US infrastructure. He said this move would better protect elections from increasingly sophisticated hacking.

"Now more than ever, it is important that we offer our assistance to state and local election officials in the cybersecurity of their systems," Johnson wrote in a statement published late Friday afternoon. "Election infrastructure is vital to our national interests, and cyber attacks on this country are becoming more sophisticated, and bad cyber actors—ranging from nation states, cyber criminals and hacktivists—are becoming more sophisticated and dangerous."

The designation came the same day that US intelligence officials published an unclassified version of a report concluding that Russian Federation president Vladimir Putin directly ordered intelligence agencies to collect data from the Democratic National Committee, the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, and other organizations. The agencies then oversaw an effort to discredit Clinton, the Democratic party, and the US democratic political process through “information operations," according to the report, which was jointly written by the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, and the FBI.

Intel report describes Putin-directed smear campaign to elect Trump

Report asserts “high confidence” of Putin involvement, Russia support of Wikileaks

Enlarge / Light reading for a Friday afternoon.

Shortly after intelligence officials delivered a highly-classified briefing on the Russian government’s alleged interference in US politics to President-elect Donald Trump, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) published an unclassified version of the report. This version outlines the majority of the joint conclusions of the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, and Federal Bureau of Investigation. While it contains no major new hacking revelations, what is new is its focus on the role of Russia’s state-funded media organization, known as RT, and its international satellite media operations.

Ars is still preparing a more thorough analysis of the report and its findings. But the gist of the CIA, NSA, and FBI analysts’ findings is that the Russian Federation’s president, Vladimir Putin, directly ordered intelligence agencies to collect data from the Democratic National Committee, the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, and other organizations, and he orchestrated an effort to discredit Clinton, the Democratic party, and the US democratic political process through “information operations.”

We assess Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential election. Russia’s goals were to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency. We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump. We have high confidence in these judgements.

In an appendix to the report, the agencies laid out a detailed, publicly-sourced analysis of RT’s alleged propaganda operations, including television programming that promoted the Occupy Wall Street movement and focused on information countering US government domestic and foreign policy. RT, in the agency’s assessment, used coverage of the Occupy Movement to promote the notion that change wasn’t possible within the US democratic system and that only “revolutionary action” could affect real change.
