HMD Global is the new Finnish company that acquired the rights to sell Nokia-branded phones from Microsoft. And the first of those phones just launched in China.
It’s called the Nokia 6, and it’s a $245 phone with an interesting mix of premium and mid-range hardware. The phone will only available from Chinese online retailer JD.com at launch, but it’s just the first of many Nokia phones we expect from HMD in the coming years.

Which torrent sites are the most popular this year? As we continue a long-standing tradition, we see that The Pirate Bay comes out as the king of torrents once again. Since several torrent sites have shut down in recent months, this year’s top list also reveals some newcomers.

At the beginning of 2017 the torrent landscape looks quite different from a year ago.
With the shutdown of KickassTorrents and Torrentz.eu, two of the largest players in the scene disappeared.
However, their places were quickly filled by established sites and a few new faces. The Pirate Bay is in the lead once again, closely followed by ExtraTorrent and RARBG, which gained many new visitors in recent months.
The unofficial Torrentz reincarnation Torrentz2.eu is the highest newcomer in fifth place. This meta-search engine copied the look and feel of the defunct meta-search engine and covers dozens of extra sites compared to its predecessor.
TorrentProject is also doing well. The site has been around for quite a few years already but never made it into the top ten before.
Finally, Nyaa.se and Rutracker also deserve a mention. Both have enough traffic to warrant a listing, but we chose to limit the list to sites that are targeted at mainstream content for an English or international audience.
Below is the full list of the ten most-visited torrent sites at the start of the new year. The list is based on various traffic reports and we display the Alexa rank for each. In addition, we include last year’s ranking.
The Pirate Bay is the “king of torrents” once again and also the oldest site in this list. The past year has been relatively quiet for the notorious torrent site, which is currently operating from its original .org domain name.
ExtraTorrent has steadily grown its userbase over the past several years and this trend continues. According to the site’s founder, ET’s active community is one of the main reason for this success. The site is also the home of the popular ETTV and ETRG release groups.
RARBG, which started out as a Bulgarian tracker, has gained the hearts and minds of many video pirates. Movies and TV-shows with a RARBG tag are a common sight on other torrent indexes as well. The site was founded in 2008 but only made its first appearance in the top ten in 2015.
YTS.ag is in no way affiliated with the original YTS or YIFY group, but succesfully took its place late last year. Not all other torrent sites are happy with the ‘brand hijack’ and several are actively banning its releases.
Torrentz2 is a stand-in for the original Torrentz.eu site, which voluntarily closed its doors last summer. The meta-search engine is open about the fact that it’s not related to the “real” Torrentz and positions itself as a new and improved version, searching over 60 other torrent sites.
1337x had some issues a year ago, when several of the admins and moderators protested over security concerns. However, much progress has been made since. The site improved, kept growing in traffic, and recently rolled out a new design as well.
TorrentProject is a familiar name in the torrent scene but appears in the top ten for the first time. The site uses DHT to find content and currently has more than 10 million torrents in its database.
The original TV-torrent distribution group EZTV shut down after a hostile takeover in 2015, with new owners claiming ownership of the brand. The new group currently operates from EZTV.ag and releases its own torrents. These releases are banned on some other torrent sites due to this controversial history.
TorrentDownloads has been around for several years. Like many other sites it is actively blocked by ISPs in several countries. The site offers a no-nonsense index that provides torrents to millions of users each month.
Limetorrents.cc regained a spot in the top ten this year. The site’s operator also launched the torrent cache iTorrents a few months ago, which is used by several other torrent search engines.
Disclaimer: Yes, we know that Alexa isn’t perfect and that Compete has plenty of flaws, but when combined both do a pretty good job at comparing sites that operate in a similar niche.

Over the past few days I’ve published nearly 100 articles, 29 videos, and more photos than I care to count while covering the latest tech on display at the Consumer Electronics Show.
As in previous years, I did most of this with the help of just a few tools: a laptop, a smartphone, and a camera. But I brought a new phone, a new laptop, and a newish camera with me this year, So how did everything stack up?

Dell, Lenovo, and HP all used the Consumer Electronics Show as an opportunity to show off their latest laptop designs. But they weren’t the only companies showing new laptops.
Many Chinese manufacturers also brought their latest designs to the show… and to be honest, a lot of them looked quite familiar. One company was displaying a “Yogo” laptop with a design that was clearly inspired by the Lenovo Yoga line of products.
And several companies had thin and light laptops powered by Intel Apollo Lake processors.

The company behind the GPD Win handheld gaming device have been making Android handhelds for years. But GPD’s Win got a lot of attention because it’s a Windows-powered handheld that can run PC games.
Now the company is planning to launch something new: a 7 inch laptop that’s small enough to slide into your pocket.
It’s called the GPD Pocket, and it’s expected to support either Windows 10 or Ubuntu 16.04 Linux.

Aviation Herald reports that drone “impacted the right hand side of the radome.”

LAM Mozambique Airlines has told Portuguese-language media that one of its aircraft was struck Thursday, possibly by a drone. In a Facebook post, the airline said that the crew of the Boeing 737 heard a bang, suggesting that some sort of “external body” hit the aircraft. The 737 was flying from Maputo and on approach to Tete airport when the incident occurred.
The Aviation Herald wrote that “a post flight examination revealed a drone had impacted the right hand side of the radome.” The website Mozambicano also reported the drone strike. The aircraft apparently landed safely with 80 passengers and six crew members on board.
In April 2016, British Airways reported that one of its aircraft may have hit a drone while landing at London Heathrow Airport.
First gesture control, now holograms!
LAS VEGAS—At CES this year, BMW showed off a concept car as part of its "i Inside Future" exhibit, which was built upon the idea that car interiors could be more friendly and inviting. With its rich textures and light wooden accents, the concept car feels more like an artisanal nook than a cold vessel of technology.
But arguably more interesting than its holistically-designed frame is the new HoloActive Touch system, which builds on BMW's earlier AirTouch dashboard system.
AirTouch debuted at CES 2016 and uses sensors on the dash to pick up hand gestures. It allows you to control parts of the information system without pressing any physical buttons. HoloActive Touch adds a new layer by placing holographic action buttons near the center console. The buttons provide haptic feedback when "pressed" using a hand gesture. BMW told Ars that this concept car was mostly designed with autonomous vehicles in mind and likely wouldn't be a reality for another 15 years. Nevertheless, it was exciting to play with now. Check out the video below to see a demo of HoloActive and BMW's concept car.
Nintendo’s NES Classic is a $60 device that looks just like the original Nintendo Entertainment System game console, only smaller. Unveiled last summer, the device went on sale a few months ago and it was an instant hit: it’s hard to find stores that still have the little game console in stock.
But unlike the original NES from the 1980s, the NES Classic doesn’t take cartridges. It comes with 30 games pre-installed and there’s officially no way to change the games.
