Pebble confirms Fitbit sale: Hardware is dead, software in maintenance mode

Pebble Time 2, Pebble Core, and Pebble Time Round watches will never ship.

Pebble, the onetime darling of Kickstarter backers everywhere, has had a rough year. Despite the launch of the Pebble 2 this fall, the company had to lay off 25 percent of its workforce in March. And late last week, news broke that it would be selling to fitness wearable company FitBit for somewhere between $34 and $40 million. That paltry sum is about half of the $70 million that Intel allegedly offered for the company in early 2016, and it's just a fraction of the $740 million that Citizen reportedly offered in 2015. It's also a little less than the roughly $43 million that the company has cumulatively raised across its $10.2 million, $20.3 million, and $12.8 million Kickstarter pledge drives since April 2012.

Today Pebble confirmed the sale and outlined next steps on its blog, its Kickstarter page, and its support site, and the news is pretty dire for any Pebble die-hards who remained steadfast in the face of Android Wear and the Apple Watch. Pebble is getting out of the hardware business entirely, ceasing production on all current products and issuing Kickstarter refunds for any backers of the Pebble 2 who hasn't gotten their watch yet—the company has already "shipped every Pebble 2 possible," and the Pebble Time 2, Pebble Core, and Pebble Time Round will never see the light of day. Backers eligible for a refund will automatically be credited for their pledges as well as for shipping costs and taxes by March of 2017.

As for Pebble watches that are already out in the world, they'll continue to work for now, but "functionality or service quality may be reduced in the future." The company also says it doesn't plan to offer regular software updates or new features for its existing watches—this doesn't preclude the possibility of bug fix releases, but don't get your hopes up for much else.

Samsung Experience is the new name for TouchWiz (Android Skin for Samsung phones and tablets)

Samsung Experience is the new name for TouchWiz (Android Skin for Samsung phones and tablets)

Samsung’s TouchWiz software has long been a love it or hate it addition to Android on Samsung’s smartphones and tablets. But it looks like TouchWiz is on its way out… or at least the Touchwiz name is.

Android Central noticed that the latest beta software for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones refers to the software as “Samsung Experience version 8.”

Samsung Experience version 8 is based on Android 7.0 Nougat, and while the color palette is a lot more blue-and-white than the green-and-blue of yesteryear, Samsung’s software still looks pretty different from the version of Android you’d see on a Nexus or Pixel device.

US pharma giant Pfizer and a partnering distributor have been slapped with a record fine for hiking UK drug prices by 2,600% overnight.

In September 2012, the amount the National Health Service (NHS) was charged for 100mg packs of anti-epilepsy drug phenytoin sodium went from £2.83 to £67.50 ($3.56 to $84.98), according to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). As a result of the price increase, NHS expenditure on the drug increased from about £2 million ($2.52M) a year in 2012 to around £50 million ($62.95M) in 2013.

The CMA has ordered the two companies involved, the US pharma giant Pfizer and UK-based distributor Flynn Pharma, to pay record fines of £84.2 million ($106.01M) and £5.2 million ($6.55M) respectively, and to reduce their prices for phenytoin sodium. Both have said that they will be taking legal action to overturn the decision.

Fitbit acquires Pebble, shuts down Pebble, cancels upcoming products, voids warranties

As expected, activity tracker company Fitbit is acquiring smartwatch maker Pebble. And as expected, the company is mostly interested in Pebble’s “key personnel and intellectual property… not the company’s existing line of hardware and software.

So Pebble is basically shutting down, canceling the products the company had announced this summer, and voiding warranties for existing products.

If you already have a Pebble watch it will continue to work… for now So I guess that’s good news for the company’s customers.

Google says it’ll be fully powered by renewable energy in 2017

It’s not about maintaining a public image—“We are convinced this is good for business.”

(credit: Bureau of Ocean Energy Management)

Google has announced it will power its entire global operations using energy from renewable sources next year.

In a move that the search and advertising giant is hailing as "a huge milestone," 100 percent of the 2600 megawatts or so that Google's parent company Alphabet needs to power its data centres and offices around the world will be acquired by solar or wind energy.

Google is already the world's largest private buyer of energy from renewable sources, leaving Amazon in a distant second, and it used renewables to meet 44 percent of its needs last year. The decision has been taken in part for cost reasons, as the price of renewables has recently tumbled, but its European head of energy Marc Oman insisted that it isn't "about greenwashing" (or presenting an environmentally responsible image).

(Weltraumschrott, Nasa)
