Touch Bar MacBook Pro teardown finds some unpleasant surprises

The inside of the Touch Bar model is much different from the $1,499 model.

iFixit

Apple is selling two new computers that it's calling MacBook Pros: one model without the new Touch Bar and one model with a Touch Bar. But according to a teardown of the Touch Bar model by iFixit, the differences don't stop there. The Touch Bar has an entirely different motherboard, cooling system, and internal layout. Unfortunately some of those changes make it even more difficult to repair than its cousin.

The Touch Bar MacBook Pro has a much larger cooling system than the non-Touch Bar model—it uses two fans instead of one, and the symmetrical and vaguely mustache-shaped logic board wraps around both of them. The odd layout (plus the need to make additional room for extra chips like the Apple T1 and the second Thunderbolt 3 controller) leaves less room for other things, and as a result Apple has soldered the SSD to the motherboard in the Touch Bar MacBook Pros, much as it has in the 12-inch MacBook.

Google Earth does VR… but only for HTC Vive at launch

Google Earth does VR… but only for HTC Vive at launch

Google’s Daydream View virtual reality headset for smartphones began shipping this month, and one of the first apps available for the platform is a VR version of Google Street View. I found it kind of underwhelming.

But you know what looks pretty cool? Google Earth VR.

Google is launching a virtual reality version of its app that allows you to explore the globe using satellite photos and 3D imagery. Unfortunately Google Earth VR isn’t available for Daydream yet.

You can now preorder Google Wifi, will ship December 5

The $129 mesh Wi-Fi router is for sale at the Google Store, Amazon, and other outlets.

During Google's huge October 4 event, the company announced a slew of new "Google" branded products that have been slowly trickling out to consumers. We've already seen the launch of the Google Pixel, Google Home, Daydream VR, and the Chromecast Ultra, but there's still one product from the event that hasn't hit the streets yet: the Google Wifi, a mesh router system.

We're getting closer to release. Preorders for Google Wifi are now up at the Google Store, Best Buy, Amazon, and Walmart. This is also the first time we've seen a solid launch date for the product: most sites are showing a ship date of December 5 or 6.

Anti-Piracy Outfit Impersonates Competitor, Steals its Clients

Two employees of anti-piracy outfit MarkScan have been arrested by Indian police. The men are accused of masquerading as competing anti-piracy firm Aiplex, informing its clients via a fake website that the company was shutting down, and suggesting MarkScan as an alternative. The CEO of the company was allegedly in on the scam, which is still under investivation.

handcuffedAnti-piracy groups are often quick to label file-sharing sites as criminal organizations, but these outfits also have some rotten apples among their own.

There is a lot of money to be made protecting copyright holders, and it appears that people are willing to break the law to increase their profits.

This week, Indian police arrested two engineers of the Indian anti-piracy company MarkScan. The two allegedly impersonated local competitor Aiplex to hijack their clients.

According to local reports, MarkScan CEO Abhishek Dhoreliya is the brains behind the scam. He allegedly hired the two engineers, one of whom worked at Aiplex until very recently.

The pair, Ami Vivek and Sushant Mohindru, stand accused of operating a fake Aiplex website at aiplex.us, complete with a fake email address of the company’s owner. They used this to inform clients that Aiplex was shutting down, encouraging them to switch to Markscan.

This strategy paid off as several rightsholders including MTV, Colors, Fox Star, Eros International, and Bollywoodlife fell for the trick.

Perplexed by the sudden exodus, Aiplex’s founder reached out to his former clients to find out what had happened. After he learned that someone had impersonated his company, he filed a complaint with the police, who traced the site back to the MarkScan employees.

“Markscan, which saw Aiplex as a bigger rival, decided to hijack its clients,” a senior police officer said, commenting on the investigation.

“During the investigation, we were able to get the IP address and traced it to Delhi. We caught Vivek and Sushant who said they were acting at the behest of Dhoreliya,” the officer noted.

Thus far police have only apprehended the two engineers. However, the investigation is ongoing and more arrest may follow in the near future.

Regular TorrentFreak readers may recognize MarkScan from its dubious takedown notices. The company has sent preemptive takedown warnings to torrent sites, tried to have BBC iPlayer removed from Google, and regularly targeted sites over non-existing torrent files.

MarkScan CEO Abhishek Dhoreliya previously denied that they’ve sent some or these erreneous notices. Interestingly, he accused others of running an imposter website of his company, sending bogus takedown noitices on their behalf.

“We got to know from OVH that they have been receiving several fake notices where the sender has created a replica website of MarkScan with the name of markscan.co,” Dhoreliya told us earlier this year.

At the time of writing, MarkScan appears to be operating as usual. The website is still online, listing several prominent rightsholders including HBO, Nokia, and the BBC as recent clients, and MPAA India as one of its partners.

After Trump’s election, GOP tells FCC to halt controversial rulemakings

Set-top box rules and other changes could be dead in Obama’s final months.

Republicans in Congress have urged the Federal Communications Commission to avoid passing any controversial regulations between now and Donald Trump's inauguration as president. If FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler complies with the request, it could prevent passage of rules designed to help cable customers avoid set-top box rental fees—and any other controversial changes.

"Leadership of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will soon change," Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, wrote to Wheeler yesterday. "Congressional oversight of the execution of our nation's communications policies will continue. Any action taken by the FCC following November 8, 2016, will receive particular scrutiny. I strongly urge the FCC to avoid directing its attention and resources in the coming months to complex, partisan, or otherwise controversial items that the new Congress and new Administration will have an interest in reviewing."

Thune's office said that Democrats made a similar request of the FCC in December 2008 when the presidency was about to change from Republican to Democratic control, and "the FCC complied with the request."

Microsoft joins the Linux Foundation, no really

Microsoft joins the Linux Foundation, no really

There was a time when Microsoft and the Linux community seemed to be at war. Things have been changing for a while. Microsoft has built its own Linux distro for cloud software. Windows 10 includes a built-in Linux subsystem aimed at developers, but available for anyone to use.

And now Microsoft has joined the Linux Foundation. As a Platinum Member.

Microsoft is already a major contributor to a number of Linux projects, but joining the board of the organization is a pretty big step toward working with the open source community.

Barnes & Noble is launching its first new tablet in four years. The new NOOK Tablet 7″ is available for pre-order for $50 and should begin shipping on November 25th, the day after Thanksgiving.

The new tablet is an entry-level device which seems to be B&N’s answer to Amazon’s successful $50 Fire tablet.

Like Amazon’s tablet, the new NOOK 7 is an Android-based tablet with a color display and entry-level specs that sells for less than the price of any of the company’s eReaders with E Ink displays.

Microsoft—yes, Microsoft—joins the Linux Foundation

Google joins the .NET Foundation; the first preview of SQL Server for Linux is out.

NEW YORK—At its first Connect event in 2013, Microsoft released Visual Studio 2013. In 2014, it announced the open sourcing of .NET, and in 2015, the open sourcing of the Visual Studio Code editor. The big news this year? Microsoft, the company that has built an empire on proprietary, closed-source software, has joined the Linux Foundation as a platinum member.

Microsoft has been a big contributor to Linux over the past several years, primarily focusing on improving support for its Hyper-V hypervisor. Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, said that in becoming a member, "Microsoft is better able to collaborate with the open source community to deliver transformative mobile and cloud experiences to more people."

Microsoft's increasing commitment to open source has been met with some cynicism (and please, beloved commenters—try to refrain from "embrace, extend, extinguish" posts, as the very concept is preposterous when it comes to Linux), but with projects such as Visual Studio Code and .NET, is starting to win hearts and minds. The company does appear to be a reasonably good open source citizen, not merely publishing source code repositories that are occasionally updated from an internal development branch, but actually performing development in the open, accepting community contributions, and seeking community consensus when it comes to new features.
