Airport: Apple gibt angeblich weitere Produkte auf

Time Capsule und Airport? Google invests more in Montreal-based deep-learning experts, opens new AI lab

Google announced today that it will extend funding for AI research at the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA). The company will invest a total of C$4.5 million, or about US$3.4 million, to fund seven faculty members across the institute, as well as MILA faculty at the University of Montreal and McGill University.

That funding will also continue to support Yoshua Bengio, one of the few deep-learning experts currently working. There's no doubt that Google is hoping to expand its AI and deep-learning expertise by investing in folks like Benigo.

Google also announced it will be opening up a deep-learning and AI research group at its offices in Montreal. The group is linked to the Google Brain team, which already works to bring AI technology across the company, and it will be headed by another deep-learning expert, Hugo Larochelle. Google is clearly trying to hold on to as much deep-learning and AI talent as it can—having hired deep learning expert Geoff Hinton in 2013 from the University of Toronto—and keep them in space where that research is flourishing. Montreal has become a destination for AI startups and affiliated research groups.

Dreamhack Organizer Arrested in Torrent Site Crackdown

Earlier this month Swedish police took down Rarat.org, one of the largest private torrent trackers in the country. With help from PayPal the authorities were able to identity and arrest the prime target, who also happens to be an organizer of the upcoming winter edition of Dreamhack.

raratWhile Rarat.org is relatively unknown in most countries, it gained local fame in Sweden as one of the top private trackers.

This ended abruptly a few weeks ago when the site’s homepage was replaced with a worrying message, indicating the site’s operators were in trouble.

“The week Rarat was subject to a search, seizure, and arrest. This follows a 2013 complaint from a film company that tracked down our PayPal payments. Damages in the millions of krona are feared. The site will now be closed.”

This weekend, Rights Alliance lawyer Henrik Pontén, who represents several copyright holders, informed DN that Nordisk Film, SF, and Disney filed a criminal complaint back in 2013.

Initially, there wasn’t much progress in the case. However, a breakthrough came when PayPal, with help from Rights Alliance, identified the person who received Rarat’s donations.

With this information in hand a special unit of Sweden’s Department of National Police Operations, NOA, managed track down one of the alleged operators of the torrent site.

Interestingly, this prime suspect is also one of the organizers of the winter edition of Dreamhack, the largest computer festival in the world. The upcoming Dreamhack event, which takes place in Jönköping, is expected to draw 50,000 computer and gaming fanatics.

Earlier this month the Dreamhack organizer was arrested and taken in for questioning on suspicion of copyright infringement. In addition, several computers were seized as evidence during a house search.

“The investigation is still at an early stage, and there could be more people involved. We will now carry out a cyber forensic investigation. The suspect has been released pending a possible prosecution,” a representative of Stockholm’s Public Prosecution Office told DN.

The alleged torrent site operator denies his involvement with the site but has been put on leave from work by Dreamhack, pending the investigation.

“I’m not worried. The police have the wrong person,” the man commented, noting that the Rarat site shut down while the police were interrogating him.

Rights Alliance lawyer Henrik Pontén says that the complaint lists five films. As a result, the total scale of the damages could reach 10 million Swedish krona, which is well over a million dollars.

With rockets on the move, SpaceX still aiming for 2016 return to flight

Nearly three months have passed since SpaceX experienced a catastrophic failure on Sept. 1, when an accident occurred as helium was loaded onto its Falcon 9 rocket. As the company has now identified the cause of the accident, it is pressing ahead to try and return to flight before the end of 2016.

It is apparently making progress. On Sunday reddit user codercotton posted images and a short video of a Falcon 9 first-stage booster on Interstate 10 in Arizona, bound for Vandenberg Air Force Base in southern California from the company's test facilities in McGregor, Texas. This is the booster for the launch of 10 satellites owned by Iridium, a Virginia-based satellite communications company. Later, Iridium's chief executive, Matt Desch, tweeted, "Stage 1 arriving in California for our launch. Soon, very soon."

However it is not certain that Iridium will fly first on SpaceX. Several companies are maneuvering for that high-profile launch, including EchoStar and its own communications satellite. Unlike the Iridium flight, the EchoStar payload will launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, where preparations are ongoing to Launch Complex 39A to ready it for flight.

Apple to replace iPhone 6S batteries in some handsets due to shutdown flaw

Apple says the recall does not represent a safety issue.

(credit: Andrew Cunningham)

Apple has promised to replace the batteries in what it says are "a very small number" of iPhone 6S handsets that have suffered sudden shutdowns.

Over the weekend, the company confirmed rumours coming out of China that some customers were seeing their phones unceremoniously switch off.

Unlike the battery problems with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, which saw some handsets unexpectedly go up in flames, Apple has insisted that its iPhone 6S recall doesn't represent "a safety issue."
