UK advertising board investigating No Man’s Sky marketing

The UK's Advertising Standard Authority is investigating whether Hello Games misled customers with online screenshots, videos, and descriptions of No Man's Sky that allegedly don't match with the final product.

The ongoing investigation was confirmed by Eurogamer after being publicized in a Reddit thread discussing the ASA's response to a number of consumer complaints. According to that response, the investigation is reportedly focused on a number of game features highlighted on the game's Steam page but allegedly not present in the same form in the final game. These include complaints about ship and animal behavior, gameplay scale, interface changes, load times, and even overall graphical quality. Both Hello Games and Valve have reportedly been asked to respond to a number of questions surrounding that online marketing.

The Advertising Standards Authority is empowered by the UK government to force the removal of advertising it finds misleading and impose sanctions on company's that don't apply. Usually, though, the group says it relies on "bad publicity" to effect compliance with its rulings; "an advertiser’s reputation can be badly damaged if it is seen to be flouting the rules designed to protect consumers."

After HP blocks third-party ink from working with printers, company promises optional update to remove the ban

After HP blocks third-party ink from working with printers, company promises optional update to remove the ban

A few weeks ago HP activated a firmware update for many of its recent printers. The company said the update was meant to “ensure the best consumer experience,” but what the update did was stop HP’s printers from working with third-party ink cartridges.

Even customers who had already purchased those cartridges, put them in their printers, and used them for months found that after the update they could no longer print.

This left many users frustrated, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation called on HP to roll back the update and promise never to describe this sort of thing as a “security” update again.

FCC delays cable TV apps vote, needs time to work out licensing

You’ll have to wait longer for free TV apps that replace rented set-top boxes.

The Federal Communications Commission has delayed a vote on a plan that would require pay-TV operators to make free TV applications, so cable subscribers will have to wait longer for an alternative to renting set-top boxes from cable companies.

The FCC was scheduled to vote on final rules at its monthly meeting today, but the item was removed from the agenda just before the meeting began. The commission's Democratic majority still seems determined to issue new rules, but there have been objections from the cable industry and disagreements among Democratic commissioners over some of the details.

"We have made tremendous progress—and we share the goal of creating a more innovative and inexpensive market for these consumer devices," Chairman Tom Wheeler and fellow Democrats Mignon Clyburn and Jessica Rosenworcel said today in a joint statement. "We are still working to resolve the remaining technical and legal issues and we are committed to unlocking the set-top box for consumers across this country.”
