Steal This Show S02E02: ‘The Platform Is You’

stslogo180Returning guest Holmes ‘I’m on a boat‘ Wilson (Fight For The Future) checks in from… a boat in the harbour of Rio de Janeiro.

We discuss the ongoing attempt to extradite Megaupload’s Kim Dotcom to the United States, why Creative Future is publicly dissing his organisation, and what (if anything) should come after big torrent sites.

We then take another twenty minutes to discuss how decentralisation of media is contributing to the rise of the kek-worshipping alt-right. How does P2P affect political power in general? And what’s the importance of meme-creation in a distributed media environment?

Steal This Show aims to release bi-weekly episodes featuring insiders discussing copyright and file-sharing news. It complements our regular reporting by adding more room for opinion, commentary and analysis.

The guests for our news discussions will vary and we’ll aim to introduce voices from different backgrounds and persuasions. In addition to news, STS will also produce features interviewing some of the great innovators and minds.

Chevy’s new saccharine ad campaign uses IBM’s Watson to induce self-reflection

Use Watson’s personality insights and sentiment analysis to get free gas.

On Tuesday night, Chevrolet rolled out a new ad campaign called “Fueling Possibilities” that uses IBM’s AI software Watson to give people positivity tests. The ad campaign’s “positivity pump” looks at your Twitter and Facebook accounts in order to assess how upbeat your posts are.

Chevrolet’s parent company, GM, said that it would be bringing traveling positivity pumps to gas stations around the world for the remainder of the year. Customers will be able to input their social media account names and get free gas based on their positivity score (more positivity gets you more free gas).

The positivity pump has already stopped in Buenos Aires, Cape Town, and New Orleans, and Chevy has released an ad using footage from all three locations.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update rollout will take 3 months

Real-world testing is being used to drive the pace of deployment.

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update was released to the stable Windows 10 channel back on August 2. Today is September 13, and many Windows 10 users are still waiting for their update. According to an e-mail that some Windows users have received, that update may not be rolled out until November, as reported by Mary Jo Foley.

Impatient Windows 10 users can force the update to install by using the Windows 10 Upgrade Tool here.

Staggered rollouts aren't new. Previous major updates have often taken days to become universally available. But this scale, with three months from start to finish, is longer and more drawn out than has been seen before, and Microsoft is being much more tentative about the rollout than it traditionally is.

Air Force video: F-16 pilot saved by automatic collision avoidance system

Auto-GCAS pulls plane out of dive after pilot passes out from G-force.

Video obtained by Aviation Week of an F-16's heads-up display during a near-crash in training—one prevented by an automatic collision avoidance system.

A declassified Air Force video from May of this year shows the moments after an Arizona Air National Guard pilot on a training flight passed out during a high-speed turn. He was rendered unconscious by forces that exceeded eight times the Earth's gravity. His F-16 fighter dove at a 55 degree angle toward the ground at 587 knots (about 675 miles per hour) with full afterburner engaged.

But the video has a happy ending.
