Microsoft sold 13.8 million Lumia phones last year

It’s no secret that Microsoft’s Windows software for smartphones has a relatively tiny market share. But the same week that Apple is trumpeting the sale of its billionth iPhone, Microsoft has released financial documents showing that the company sold just 13.8 million Lumia phones in 2016… and just about 1.2 million in the last quarter.

The decline in sales is part of a trend, but the news comes two months after Microsoft announced a major shift in strategy for its phone hardware: the company is streamlining its smartphone plans to focus on the enterprise market and enthusiasts, selling off its feature phone division, and eliminating 1,850 related jobs.

Democratic Party’s congressional fundraising committee was also hacked

DCCC’s website redirected donors to a fake contribution page controlled by attackers.

Yet another cyber-attack has targeted a Democratic Party organization—or more specifically, the party's donors. Reuters reports that the FBI is investigating a breach of the systems of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. While the details of the alleged intrusion were not revealed, visitors to the DCCC's site were apparently redirected to a malicious lookalike website mimicking the DCCC contribution page.

Visitors to the DCCC page who clicked a link to donate were directed to a look-alike domain name registered in June instead of the site of a donation processing contractor. The IP address of the fake site "resembled one used by Russian government-linked hackers suspected in the breach of the DNC," Reuters' Joseph Menn, Dustin Volz, and Mark Hosenball reported. Data collected included donor's contact information, e-mail addresses, and possibly credit card information.

It is not clear whether the attackers were after financial information for credit card fraud, or if they were collecting personal data for use in directed attacks against donors. But the attack's timing—or at least the registration of the domain used in the attack—matches up with the recent discovery of a Democratic National Committee breach. The DCCC shares office space with the DNC in Washington.

Computer-on-a-stick products have gotten a lot more powerful in 2016. A few years ago you could find models with ARM-based processors and Android software. In 2015 we started to see models with Intel Atom Bay Trail chips. And this year saw the launch of new Intel Compute Stick models, with some featuring Atom Cherry Trail chips and others sporting Core M Skylake processors.

While the Core M models are the most powerful PC sticks to date, there’s a new Japanese model that seems to split the difference by using a mid-range Cherry Trail processor and 4GB of RAM instead of the usual 2GB.

Movie Studios ‘Take Down’ Popular KAT Mirror

One of the most popular KAT mirrors has had its domain name taken down following pressure from the major Hollywood studios. The Armenian .AM registry was quick to disable the KAT.am domain, but that doesn’t mean that the mirror site operator is throwing in the towel just yet.

kickasstorrents_500x500More than a week has passed since KickassTorrents (KAT) was shut down by the U.S. Government, following the arrest of the site’s alleged owner.

Soon after the official site went offline various mirrors and copies were launched to take its place. While none of these sites have anything to do with the original site, they do attract hundreds of thousands of users.

One of the more popular mirrors is KAT.am. The site was featured in several news reports with some suggesting that it’s an official reincarnation of the original KickassTorrents site.

While that is certainly not true, the instant success of this ‘copyKAT’ was enough to get Hollywood worried. Especially because its operator also started to add new torrents to the site.

It therefore came as no surprise that the Motion Picture Association, representing Hollywood’s major studios, sent KAT.am’s owner a stark warning.

“This Notice requires you to immediately (within 24 hours) take effective measures to end and prevent further copyright infringement. All opportunities provided by the Website to download, stream or otherwise obtain access to the Entertainment Content should be disabled permanently,” MPA’s email reads.

TorrentFreak spoke to operator of the mirror, who informed us that he has no intention of backing down. However, he noted that the MPA(A) pressure did lead to a suspension of the domain name.

“The MPAA coordinated with the Armenian registry and got the domain deleted,” KAT.am’s operator said. “We are making continuous attempts to bring it back, utilizing all the legal channels available.”

At the time of writing KAT.am remains offline. However, the mirror has already launched two new domains, kickass.cd and kickass.mx, from where it continues to operate.

KAT?

katmirror

Operating a KAT mirror is not without risk, given the fact that the original site is the target of a criminal investigation by the U.S. Government. That doesn’t seem to bother the operator in question though.

“We are not worried, because if it’s not us, someone else will keep the game running. If not the alleged owner, it can be us. If we are not there, still there will surely be someone else. This never ends,” he tells us.

For some KAT users the “mirror” situation is rather confusing. They believe that the mirrors are somehow connected to the original site and some may attempt to login, which isn’t possible as these sites don’t have a copy of the user database.

Login attempts are risky, as some rogue mirrors may harvest personal information for nefarious purposes. Previously, the original KAT community team warned against such mirrors, urging former users to avoid these sites.

The operator of the former KAT.am mirror says that his site is completely safe. He’s also considering adding a notice to clarify that it is not related to the original KAT, to clarify the situation.

That said, just like those who operate the mirrors, former KAT users should consider themselves warned too.

Microsoft cuts 3,000 jobs in smartphone division, sales

Redundancies mostly hit remnants of Microsoft’s disastrous Nokia deal.

Microsoft plans to lay off nearly 3,000 more jobs over the next year across its smartphone hardware business and global sales division.

The latest cuts heap misery on Microsoft staff, after the software giant confirmed in May that 1,850 jobs would be lost at its mobile wing—even as its Windows and devices veep Terry Myerson insisted: "we're scaling back, but we're not out!"

Microsoft bought Nokia's devices and services business in 2013 for €5.4 billion ($7.1 billion), bringing with it what would quickly unravel into one of the worst tech acquisitions of all time.

Burn, baby, burn: SpaceX test fires a rocket previously flown in May

The booster performed well, raising chances of a first reuse flight this year.

Landed Falcon 9 first stage test firing

On Thursday, SpaceX took another step toward reusing rockets when it fired the nine engines on the first stage of a Falcon 9 booster it launched in May. The company released video of the full-duration engine firing, which mimicked the length of a first-stage burn toward orbit, conducted at its test site in MacGregor, Texas.

This particular booster, which launched a Japanese communications satellite to geostationary transfer orbit on May 6, will not be re-flown. According to Spaceflight Now, the company designated it as a reference vehicle because it weathered extreme temperatures during its reentry into Earth's atmosphere. The rocket will undergo additional tests as engineers determine the readiness of flown boosters for additional flights into space.

This test plan is part of SpaceX's plans to re-fly the first booster it landed at sea, the rocket it used in April to launch a cargo delivery mission to the International Space Station. That first stage had an easier ride back to the surface because it boosted a payload into low-Earth orbit, rather than the much higher geostationary altitudes common for communications and spy satellites.

Jason Bourne review: Yes, it’s “worse than Snowden”

Stellar lead actors, killer action sequences can’t save tone-deaf take on tech.

The Snowden-tanglement of Hollywood has begun in earnest, and that's not just a coy reference to Oliver Stone's upcoming, eponymous film. The worlds of hacking, digital transparency, and bombastic espionage are all coming together whenever possible these days. And in terms of how computer savvy is employed on-screen, we've seen the good (Mr. Robot) and the bad (Spectre).

Get ready for the ugly. Jason Bourne, the fifth film in the series, hits theaters this weekend with a few very good things going for it, including a few gargantuan action sequences and some stellar lead performances from Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, and Vincent Cassel. But someone at Universal clearly wanted its globe-trotting, CIA-loaded thriller to hit a bunch of cultural-relevance bullet points, and the results are some of the most embarrassing technological shoe-horning you'll see in a film this year.

Go ahead, set your laptop on fire

Matt Damon's Bourne hasn't become a hacker since his last turn as the secret super-agent in 2007. In fact, he has checked out from anything resembling duty, instead turning to a life of... boxing to the death. (Really.) We find Bourne on the Grecian-Albanian border, busing from one bloody, bare-knuckled brawl to the next, and the only thing that interrupts his new, wholly unexplained career detour is a visit from an old CIA comrade, Nicky Parsons (played once more by Julia Stiles).
