Software Piracy Hurts Linux Adoption, Research Finds

New research suggests that software piracy has a detrimental effect on the adoption of Linux desktop operating systems. Piracy is one of the reasons why Windows has been able to maintain its dominant market position, making open source alternatives “forgotten victims” of copyright infringement.

microsoft-pirateIt’s no secret that the Windows operating system is one of the most widely pirated pieces of software in the world.

Microsoft is not happy with this fact as it costs the company millions in lost revenue, but new research suggests that Linux adoption is being hurt as well.

New findings published by Norwegian economics researcher Arne Rogde Gramstad show that software piracy significantly decreases the adoption of desktop Linux distributions.

In a paper titled “Software Piracy and Linux Adoption” Gramstad examines the relationship between local software piracy rates (based on BSA’s data) and the use of Linux as a desktop operating system, while controlling for potentially interfering factors such as the gross domestic product per capita and local anti-piracy efforts.

This results in a model which predicts that more people would use Linux if software piracy in general was less prevalent in a country.

“I find that an increase in the piracy rate by 1% in a country is expected reduce the user share of Linux by around 0.5%. Although there is some level of uncertainty on the exact estimate, the direction is negative with a high level of statistical certainty,” Gramstad explains to TorrentFreak.

This means that if all piracy was to disappear the number of Linux users would increase by 50%. While that’s an impressive number, the relative impact is modest. In most countries Linux is used by roughly 1% of desktop users, which would increase to 1.5%.

It does bring up an interesting issue though, as it suggests that Microsoft’s dominant position is actually reinforced through piracy.

“I think the results highlight that there are costs to software piracy besides losses to corporate profits,” Gramstad tells TF

“For operating systems, piracy has contributed to Windows’ dominant position, which in effect has undermined competition from open-source alternatives like Linux.”

More research is needed to see how other external factors may influence the relationship between piracy and Linux adoption, but Gramstad is confident that the direction of the results is stable.

While it’s doubtful that Microsoft is going to start encouraging piracy, the results show that the effect of software piracy is not always as straightforward as one would think.

HP Elite x3: A flagship Windows phone that’s unambiguously enterprisey

HP hopes that high specs and Continuum goodness will win over corporate customers.

Microsoft has a new partner building Windows-powered phones: HP. HP Inc, the computer and printer portion of the newly split Hewlett-Packard—has announced the HP Elite x3, a high-end flagship spec phone running Windows 10 Mobile.

Hardware-wise, the Elite x3 ticks all the boxes and then some: Quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 running at 2.15GHz, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, 5.96 inch 2560×1440 AMOLED screen with Gorilla Glass 4, 2×2 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, LTE-Advanced, 16MP rear and 8MP front cameras, both iris recognition and a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, microSD, USB 3 Type-C, dual SIM, a 4150mAh battery with wireless charging using both the Qi and PMA standards, and IP 67 water resistance (safe against immersion in 1 metre of water for 30 minutes).

HP is positioning the machine squarely at corporate, enterprise customers. HP sells a lot of PCs to the enterprise, and some of those corporate buyers have expressed the interest in buying their smartphones from the company too to simplify procurement and support. Accordingly, it's heavily promoting the phone's security credentials: not only the dual biometrics, but FIPS 140-2 cryptography, 256-bit key full disk encryption, TPM 2.0, protection against firmware rollbacks, and so on.

If FBI busts into seized iPhone, it could get non-iCloud data, like Telegram chats

Investigators would “gain a massive amount of functionality and visibility of the user.”

(credit: Microsiervos)

The FBI sent Ars a statement late Saturday further clarifying its role in resetting the iCloud password on the seized iPhone 5C central to the San Bernardino terrorism investigation.

Earlier in the day a spokesman for the San Bernardino County Health Department confirmed to Ars that his agency changed the iPhone’s associated iCloud password at the request of the FBI. That action had the unintended effect of making any further iCloud backup attempts impossible, likely frustrating the terror probe. The San Bernardino County Health Department, which owns the phone, was shooter Syed Rizwan Farook’s employer.

However, the Saturday evening statement, written by FBI Los Angeles Field Office spokeswoman Laura Eimiller, also claimed that "we know that direct data extraction from an iOS device often provides more data than an iCloud backup contains." She did not respond to further questions by phone and e-mail.
