Netflix now everywhere except North Korea, China, Syria, Crimea

Overnight the service goes from 60 countries to almost all of them.

Netflix has decided that it's no longer interested in incremental expansion to reach new markets. Over the nine years since its 2007 launch, the service—once used to mail DVDs to you but now better known for online streaming of TV shows and films—has grown to cover 60 different countries, with North and South America, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan all covered. At CES today, CEO Reed Hastings opened the floodgates: Netflix will now be available in almost every country on Earth.

The expansion includes Africa, Eastern Europe, and almost all of Asia and the Middle East in one fell swoop giving Netflix greater reach than any traditional broadcaster. The only exceptions will be China, though the company says that it is still investigating ways of selling there, and North Korea, Syria, and Crimea, because of US government restrictions. To support this new larger market, the company also added support for Arabic, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese, with further languages in development.

The selection of shows and films available in each country will continue to vary on a country-by-country basis. Netflix says that its own content, including such shows as Jessica Jones and Sense8 will be available everywhere at the same time, presumably without any kind of geographical restriction.

Seismometers detect underground atomic bomb test in North Korea

Country claims it was a hydrogen bomb, but it was no larger than previous tests.

(credit: (stephan))

Just last week we had occasion to mention that seismometers are used to detect secret nuclear weapons tests as well as earthquakes. (That mention came in a story about seismometers detecting munitions explosions during fighting in Baghdad in 2006.) This week, we’ve seen this detection in action.

Around 8:30pm EST Tuesday, seismometers around the world detected what appears to be an underground detonation of an atomic bomb in North Korea. The event, which was equivalent to about a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, occurred at a shallow depth in the same location as previous tests in 2006, 2009, and 2013—a region that doesn’t see many earthquakes.

The seismic signals of these explosions differ from those produced by earthquakes. Earthquakes release compressional waves as well as shear waves produced by the sliding motion along a fault. Those waves travel through the body of the Earth, arriving at slightly different times. The real damage in an earthquake comes from waves that travel along the surface of the Earth and are the last to arrive.

Startup Leverages DMCA Notices As Artist Marketing Tool

Every day millions of pirates are being tracked by companies working for the entertainment industries. This data is often used to warn or even sue alleged offenders, but a new startup is taking a different route. Instead of punishing pirates they treat them as fans, allowing artists to use DMCA notices as a marketing tool.

traceFor more than two decades online piracy has been a hot topic in the music industry.

The problem has motivated people to sue downloaders or target them with DMCA takedown requests, which are sometimes bundled with settlement demands.

Muzit is a new startup which also tracks millions of BitTorrent pirates. However, instead of punishing downloaders they take a more gentle approach. Muzit uses DMCA notices as a means to connect artists and fans.

Muzit’s TRACE platform keeps track of where illegal downloads occur across the world and the company shares these insights with artists. They can then choose to alert the alleged pirates through DMCA notices and include a marketing message in these emails.

“Muzit was created for copyright owners who want to reach out and build a positive relationship with their fans. As long as it’s friendly, artists can send any type of message they want,” Muzit CEO Tommy Funderburk tells TF.

Funderburk is a music industry veteran with a keen interest in file-sharing. He used the same BitTorrent tracking technology in a previous startup called PayArtists where a similar system was used to demand settlement payments from alleged file-sharers.

This punishment approach has now been swapped for a system that embraces P2P distribution, hoping to connect artists and fans. As part of this positive attitude the company also dropped the use of the term “pirate.”

“At Muzit we have eliminated the word ‘pirate’ from our vocabulary. We choose to regard individuals who use P2P as fans and potential customers.‘Fans not Foes’ as we like to say,” Funderburk says.

Muzit is currently working with several copyright holders including The Mavericks and the estates of James Brown and Isaac Hayes. Typical “offers” they send to downloaders include exclusive music downloads, merchandise and unique artist memorabilia.

“Recently The Mavericks used Muzit TRACE to encourage people to sign up for their fan club by offering a free giveaway of an autographed guitar. In this campaign, they were able to reach out to around 200,000 new fans,” Funderburk tells TF.

The Mavericks are happy with the results of their campaigns so far and see them as an ideal tool to reach an audience which they haven’t been able to connect with in the past.

“We were blown away. We had no idea we had this whole other world of fans sharing our music on P2P. It works and it sure beats the hell out of an email sign up sheet at the door,” Raul Malo, leader of The Mavericks, says.

Thus far Muzit’s database includes 8.6 million file-sharers but they will continue to expand. The company also makes it clear that artists can only connect to the people who have shared their work.

The company certainly takes an interesting approach, but it’s also an odd way to use the DMCA notification system. DMCA notices are generally not intended to include all sorts of additional messages. While some downloaders may appreciate hearing from artists, others may see it as a form of spam.

Still, that beats the settlement demands companies such as Rightscorp send out.

T-Mobile added another 8.3 million customers in 2015

T-Mobile posts big growth for a second straight year while Sprint slows.

T-Mobile USA added 8.3 million customers last year, including 2.1 million in the fourth quarter, solidifying its position as the country's number three wireless carrier ahead of Sprint and behind Verizon Wireless and AT&T. T-Mobile had 63.3 million customers as of December 31, 2015, up from 55 million customers at the end of 2014, the company announced today in a preliminary earnings report. In total, T-Mobile now has 29.4 million postpaid phone customers, 2.3 million postpaid mobile broadband customers, 17.6 million prepaid customers, and 14 million wholesale customers.

This was the second consecutive year that T-Mobile boosted its customer total by more than 8 million.

T-Mobile has also improved its churn rate—the percentage of subscribers who discontinued service—meaning that fewer customers are leaving for other carriers.
