Digging into the data: How to make a faster race car driver

We talk data analysis with CJ Wilson’s championship-winning team.

When it comes to natural talent, racing a car is a lot like most other sports. Innate ability counts, of course, but it's no substitute for hard work. Data also has its role to play, enabled at the race track by rugged devices with embedded processors and GPS. It's something we've delved into at a strictly amateur level in the past, but we've been curious to see how the pros do things. Enter CJ Wilson Racing.

If you're more of a fan of stick-and-ball sports than the four-wheeled kind, you'll probably know CJ Wilson for his day job—pitching for the Anaheim Angels Major League Baseball team. However, Wilson is also a committed gearhead. He likes fast cars—he owns a McLaren P1, an R32 Nismo GTR, and a Dodge Viper ACR among others—and since 2010 he's had his own racing team. The team started off racing in the Playboy Mazda MX5 Cup (a one-make series for Miatas) before graduating to the Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge.

2015 was a good year for CJ Wilson racing. It raced Mazda MX-5s in the Street Tuner (ST) class, for cars that are allowed relatively few modifications from the road car. The #5 car, driven by Steven McAllen and Chad McCumbee, won at Watkins Glen and Lime Rock Park. Coupled with two more podiums (Sebring and Austin) and several other Top 10 finishes, it was enough to win the 2015 ST championship. The team also ran a second car at some of the races, the #3 driven by Marc Miller and Tyler McQuarrie, and we sat down with them—along with team manager Andris Laivins—in the team's transporter at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin to learn more about how data helps them succeed.

Uber doesn’t want drivers to sue again, so it pushes them to arbitration

Attorney leading lawsuit against Uber files emergency motion to halt new agreement.

(credit: Uber)

On Friday, Uber pushed a new 21-page agreement on to all of its 400,000-plus drivers nationwide, forbidding them from filing a lawsuit in the event of a future labor dispute. Drivers were required to agree to the terms on their phones and could not accept any more fares until they did so.

As a result, the lawyer representing California-based Uber drivers in an ongoing class action lawsuit has asked a federal judge in San Francisco to immediately put a stop to the new agreement.

Under Uber's new agreement, drivers are now supposed to only file for arbitration rather than sue or join a class action lawsuit. Unlike the public judicial system, arbitration is wholly private and almost always favors companies over people. Worse still, it makes class action cases nearly impossible, creating a situation where individuals en masse can rarely hold companies accountable for wrongdoing.

A Star Destroyer on your table: Ars reviews all three Star Wars miniatures games

Ars Cardboard reviews the Star Wars miniatures games X-Wing, Armada, & Imperial Assault.

Welcome to Ars Cardboard, our new weekend look at tabletop games! Check out our complete board gaming coverage right here—and let us know what you think.

This week Ars Cardboard dives into miniatures wargaming—but forget stereotypes of tiny Napoleonic soldiers walking across home-crafted terrain. We’re talking about Star Wars miniatures here, from capital ships to TIE fighters to Darth Vader himself. If you’ve ever wanted to command a squad of X-Wings, take control of an Imperial Star Destroyer, or experience a shootout with stormtroopers, the current trio of licensed Star Wars miniatures games from Fantasy Flight have you covered. And with the Force Awakens mere days away, there's never been a better time to dive in.

If you haven’t played a miniatures game before, know that these aren’t quite like traditional board games. Movement takes place not on a board but on a large, flat play surface covered with stylized miniatures that represent squads, fleets, or squadrons. Movement and range calculations are based on physical distance and angles. Miniatures can pack a visceral cool factor—these aren’t just cards or chips on a board—but they can also be intimidating for the new player.

Pirate Gets a Million YouTube Views, Everybody Benefits

A pirate ordered to get 200,000 YouTube views or risk getting sued by companies including Microsoft has smashed his target. Against the odds Jakub F’s anti-piracy video now has more than a million views. Could it be that everyone involved – from corporations to pirates – have benefited from this exercise?

When long-time software pirate Jakub F was tracked down by the Business Software Alliance, things were looking bleak.

After years of illegally sharing titles including Microsoft’s Windows, the Czech national faced a police raid at his workplace and the confiscation of a computer and related equipment. And that was only the beginning.

As previously reported, Jakub ended up with a three-year suspended sentence and the possibility of getting sued for more money than he could pay in a lifetime.

However, with little chance of collecting such a huge amount, the BSA made Jakub an offer he couldn’t refuse. Make an anti-piracy ad, reach 200,000 YouTube views, and get away with a financial slap on the wrist.

The deal was done and after a slow start the video suddenly went viral. At the time of writing and against the odds, it now has in excess of one million views.

While Jakub might look sombre in the image above, the (presumably) former pirate must be delighted at achieving his target. Two hundred thousand views was a pretty big ask and he must’ve wondered whether it would be possible. But once news began to spread, people seemed more than happy to help.

At the time though, many (myself included) dismissed Jakub’s video as propaganda. It was, after all, a pirate being paraded in public, humiliated even, for the pleasure of corporate giants. But the more one thinks about it, hasn’t this turned out well for everyone?

After keeping up his side of the bargain, the BSA is finally off Jakub’s back and he can relax, free from the worries of financial ruination. Suspended sentence aside, that’s the best result he could’ve hoped for.

The BSA got what they wanted too. Getting a million views and a viral story for an anti-piracy ad is a really spectacular achievement that nothing has come close to matching in recent years. The UK’s Creative Content campaign, for example, has a lot of backing yet its video has only clocked up 123,000 views since October.

But there are other winners too. The campaign, whatever people thought of it, became a huge talking point for a few days, sparking interest in the whole copyright debate. Did Jakub get what he deserved? Did the BSA go too far? Where can I download Jakub’s stuff? Yes, there was some of that too.

Overwhelmingly though, people seem to come out in support of Jakub, the little guy getting picked on by bullies. While each YouTube click might indeed represent a win for the BSA, each view could also be viewed as an Internet upvote for a desperate man down on his luck. And with Adblock turned on, as some vowed, the BSA wouldn’t get a penny.

Nevertheless, to appreciate the true value of the video one needs to view it through forgiving eyes. While some may disagree, I believe that while a dramatized version of events, the video was a pretty realistic depiction of what can happen to some Internet pirates. They do get tracked, they do get raided, they do face prosecution, fines, damages and God knows what else.

In that respect the BSA video is not only cautionary, but educational. It’s intended as a scare piece, no doubt about that, but for many it will function as a useful and helpful reminder that any prolific sharer is in danger of being singled out online if precautions aren’t being taken. Clearly, some people need reminding.

In this instance everyone gained something from the experience and Jakub got off extremely lightly indeed. If you still have doubts, tune in tomorrow for a really shocking story about several young men teetering on the brink of having their lives changed forever. This BSA deal will look like a walk in the park in comparison and no will come out a winner.

Black Friday Sales: PS4 Beats Xbox One in November

The PS4 has beaten the Xbox One in sales in November, for the lucrative US market, according to Sony. Sony made the announcement ahead of the official NPD report for the US market, due out next week.

This is a major coup for Sony, as Microsoft's "greatest gaming line-up ever" strategy failed to allow it to claim victory for the very important month of November (which also includes the Black Friday sales), a month that the Xbox One won last year.

For this year's Black Friday sales event, both Sony and Microsoft discounted their flagship consoles to only $300 (an offer that has now been extended by both companies until the end of the holiday shopping season). This price parity meant that Microsoft's sole advantage was its "greatest" gaming line-up, which includes exclusives such as Halo 5, as well as new games in the Forza, Gears of War and Assassin’s Creed series. In an indirect way, the Xbox One's new Xbox 360 backwards compatibility feature for selected 360 games, also helped Microsoft puff up its gaming line-up for November.

Both companies released statements stating that November had been the best November ever for both consoles, suggesting that sales of both consoles are growing strongly.

While it's still possible that the Xbox One actually had the better Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, it appears that for the entire November at least, Sony's console, which many gamers considers to be superior in performance to the Xbox One, was the one that had the "greatest" month.
