Apple agrees to pay back taxes to Italy—sources say $350 million worth

CEO says US tax accusations are “political crap,” yet Apple Italia will pay up.

In an interview on 60 Minutes earlier this month, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the idea that his company dodges taxes is "political crap," with no truth behind it. "Apple pays every tax dollar we owe," Cook said.

Outside the US, Apple has faced more than just tough questions in front of the camera. In Italy, tax authorities began an investigation in 2013 to determine whether Apple was moving its Italian revenue through an Irish subsidiary in order to take advantage of Ireland's low corporate tax rate.

That investigation has now concluded, according to reports in The Guardian and The New York TimesItalian tax authorities say Apple skipped out on paying €880 million, or about $960 million. Tax officials won't say what Apple has agreed to pay, but citing local reports, the Times reports it may be around $350 million.

Google Asked to Remove 558 Million “Pirate” Links in 2015

Copyright holders asked Google to remove more than 560,000,000 allegedly infringing links from its search engine in 2015. The staggering number is an increase of 60% compared to the year before. According to Google the continued surge is a testament that the DMCA takedown process is working, but some copyright holders disagree.

google-bayIn recent years copyright holders have overloaded Google with DMCA takedown notices, targeting links to pirated content.

The majority of these requests are sent by the music and movie industries, targeting thousands of different websites. In recent years the volume of takedown notices has increased spectacularly and this trend continued in 2015.

Google doesn’t report yearly figures, but at TF we processed all the weekly reports and found that the number of URLs submitted by copyright holders last year surpassed the 558 million mark – 558,860,089 at the time of writing.

For the first time ever the number of reported URLs has surpassed half a billion in a 12-month period. This is an increase of 60 percent compared to last year, when the search engine processed 345 million pirate links.

The majority of the links are being removed from the search results. However, Google sometimes takes “no action” if they are deemed not to be infringing or if they have been taken down previously.

This year most takedown requests were sent for the domains chomikuj.pl, rapidgator.net and uploaded.net, with more than seven million targeted URLs each. The UK Music industry group BPI is the top copyright holder of 2015, good for more than 65 million reported links.

takedownsurge

Looking at the totals for this year we further see that 329,469 different domain names were targeted by 27,035 copyright holders. Interestingly, these staggering numbers are interpreted differently by Google and various copyright holders.

A few weeks ago Google told the U.S. Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator that it has taken various measures to help copyright holders, including swift removals.

“We process more takedown notices, and faster, than any other search engine,” the search giant commented.

“We receive notices for a tiny fraction of everything we host and index, which nonetheless amounts to millions of copyright removal requests per week that are processed, on average, in under six hours.”

The company rejects broader actions, such as the removal of entire domain names, as this would prove counterproductive and lead to overbroad censorship.

Many copyright holders, however, don’t share these concerns. Over the years groups such as the MPAA and RIAA have repeatedly argued that clearly infringing sites should be barred from Google’s index. In addition, they want Google to make sure that pirated content stays down.

While Google believes that the billion reported URLs are a sign that the DMCA takedown process is working properly, rightsholders see it as a signal of an unbeatable game of whack-a-mole.

As this stalemate continues we can expect the number of reported pages to continue to rise in the future, adding millions of new URLs on a daily basis. Perhaps there will be a billion reported pirate links in 2016?

Google slams AVG for exposing Chrome user data with “security” plugin

AVG AntiVirus “force-installed” Chrome plugin that left browsing data vulnerable.

Safer browsing... except someone can watch everything you search?

A free plugin installed by AVG AntiVirus bypassed the security of Google's Chrome browser, potentially exposing the browsing histories and other personal data of customers to the Internet. The vulnerability, demonstrated in an exploit by a Google researcher earlier this year, has now been patched after initial stumbling attempts by AVG, according to a discussion of the bug in Google's security research discussion list.

AVG's "Web TuneUp" tool is a free download from the Chrome Store intended to provide reputation-based protection against malicious websites, and it was "force-installed" by AVG AntiVirus in a way that broke the security checks Chrome uses to test for malicious plugins and malware. The plugin works by sending the Web addresses of sites visited by the user to AVG's servers to check them against a database of known malicious sites. But the way the plugin was constructed meant that information could be easily exploited by an attacker through cross-site scripting [XSS], according to a post by Google Security researcher Tavis Ormandy on December 15.

"This extension adds numerous JavaScript API's to Chrome, apparently so that they can hijack search settings and the new tab page," Ormandy wrote. "The installation process is quite complicated so that they can bypass the chrome malware checks, which specifically tries to stop abuse of the extension API. Anyway, many of the API's are broken."

Martin Shkreli’s other pharma company files for bankruptcy

After firing indicted CEO, company now fights to keep shares listed on NASDAQ.

On Tuesday, KaloBios Pharmaceuticals Inc., which recently fired its indicted CEO, Martin Shkreli, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware.

The South San Francisco-based firm has faced a string of bad news since Shkreli’s December 17 arrest on securities fraud charges. The charges related to an alleged Ponzi-like scheme Shkreli was said to have orchestrated with another of his pharmaceutical companies, Retrophin, as well as two hedge funds he managed. After the arrest, KaloBios fired Shkreli, who pled not guilty to the charges and was released on a $5 million bond.

On December 18, the NASDAQ stock exchange notified KaloBios that it intended to delist the company's shares from the exchange, citing Shkreli’s arrest and the arrest of Evan Greebel, the company’s former outside counsel. Next, the company’s interim CFO, Christopher Thorn, resigned, as did the company’s certifying accountant.
