The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is a credit card-sized computer that sells for $35 and up, but that price only gets you a single-board computer without any sort of protective case. There’s an official case that sells for just $5, but over the years we’ve also seen hundreds of DIY and third-party solutions, some of which do more than just cover up the Raspberry Pi.

For example the new DeskPi Lite is more than just a case. This $30 accessory also modifies the port layout, making it easier to connect peripherals to Raspberry Pi’s little computer.

That’s because in addition to a case, the DeskPi Lite includes two expansion boards that connect to the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B’s existing hardware to offer expansion options including:

  • 2 x extra USB Type-A ports
  • 2 x micro HDMI ports are converted to full-sized HDMI ports
  • GPIO expansion headers are moved to the side of the case

The end result is a Raspberry Pi where most of the ports have been moved to the back of the system, while two extra USB ports have been added to the front, where you’ll also find status LEDs, a power button, and a microSD card reader.

Deskpi’s aluminum alloy case also helps dissipate heat, as does the adjustable speed fan that comes with the kit. And in addition to moving the GPIO headers to the side, the case has labels for each pin, which could make hooking up hardware a little simpler. Don’t need access to those GPIO headers? There’s a protective cover that hides them when they’re not exposed.

The Deskpi Lite is the latest case/kit from Deskpi, with other options including:

A new video of Tianwen-1 flying above Mars is pretty epic

“The space industry will contribute more to China’s growth as a whole.”

China celebrates the start of a new year on Tuesday—it will be the Year of the Tiger—and on the eve of the holiday, the Chinese space program sent a special message from the red planet.

The country's Tianwen-1 spacecraft, which has been in orbit around Mars for nearly one year, captured a "selfie" video that shows the craft passing in front of the planet. This video was taken by a camera on the end of a narrow arm that extends 1.6 meters away from the vehicle and is used by operators to monitor the health of the spacecraft.

Highlights of the visuals include Tianwen-1's waggling solar panels, main engine, and fuel tanks. About halfway through, the ice-capped northern pole of Mars appears in the background as Tianwen-1 makes its orbit around the planet.

The Zotac ZBOX CI331 nano is a small fanless desktop PC with a low-power Intel Celeron N5100 quad-core processor based on Jasper Lake architecture. The little computer offers silent operation and support for up to three displays, making it an option for home theater, digital signage or kiosk, or entry-level home or business computing.

First unveiled last summer, the ZBOX CI331 nano is now available from Amazon, B&H, and the Zotac Store for $260

That’s the price for a barebones model, so you’ll need to supply your own memory, storage, and operating system. The ZBOX CI331 nano supports up to 16GB of DDR4-2933 RAM and has a 2.5 inch drive bay for a hard drive or SSD (but now support for PCIe NVMe storage).

The computer has dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, support for WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5, and a set of I/O ports that includes:

  • 1 x USB 3.0 Type-C (front)
  • 1 x USB 3.0 Type-A (front)
  • 2 x USB 3.1 Type-A (rear)
  • 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A (rear)
  • 1 x 3.5mm mic input
  • 1 x 3.5mm audio output
  • 1 x HDMI 2.0b (3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz)
  • 1 x DisplayPort 1.2 (4096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz)
  • 1 x VGA (1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz)

While the computer’s 1.1 GHz – 2.8 GHz quad-core processor with 350 MHz – 800 MHz Intel UHD graphics probably won’t be much use for hardcore gaming, it should be good enough to play video or display other content across up to three displays at once. And thanks to a passive cooling system that includes a heat sink and well-ventilated chassis, the system shouldn’t make any noise during operation (unless you equip it with a noisy hard drive rather than a solid state drive with no moving parts).

The ZBOX CI331 nano is also a fairly energy efficient device – it comes with a 40W power adapter. The computer about 5.3″ x 5″ x 2.2″ and comes with a VESA mount kit that you can use to attach the mini PC to the back of a display or to a wall mount or other location.
