“Blaze your glory!”—Twitter’s “X” becomes first one-letter iPhone app

Previously, Apple required a minimum of two characters in iPhone app names.

Apple has granted a rare exception to its strict App Store rules, allowing Twitter to rebrand as X and become the first one-character iPhone app.

Two days ago, Bleeping Computer reported that Apple had rejected Twitter's attempt to update its app name to simply X due to minimum character requirements. As a result, the app was temporarily listed in its App Store as Twitter—alongside the X logo and the X tagline "Blaze your glory." This potentially further confused users over what to call the app during Elon Musk's sloppy rollout of Twitter's new branding.

It stayed that way for days until about 2:30 this morning, when Apple updated the listing in its mobile App Store, Bleeping Computer reported—allowing the App Store's first single-character name. A product designer and data scientist who founded a growth consulting agency called Next, Nick Sheriff, posted a screenshot confirming that historically the App Store only accepted app names with a minimum of two characters.

Arizona law school embraces ChatGPT use in student applications

School’s embrace of AI comes as others clamp down on tech-assisted applications.

On Friday, Arizona State University's Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law announced that prospective students would be allowed to use AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, to assist in preparing their applications, according to a report by Reuters.

This decision comes a week after the University of Michigan Law School notably decided to ban such AI tools, highlighting the diverse policies different universities are adopting related to AI's role in student applications.

Arizona State's law school says that applicants who use AI tools must clearly disclose that fact, and they must also ensure that the submitted information is accurate. This parallels the school's existing requirement for applicants to certify if they have used a professional consultant to help with their application.

iPhone 15 rumors take shape: More screen, titanium body, and (finally) USB-C

All models should see meaningful upgrades, though Pro will get the usual extras.

The iPhone 14 Pro.

We're just a few weeks out from Apple's typical launch window for new iPhone models, and, according to reputable rumors, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series are looking like fairly significant upgrades for anyone with a phone that’s more than a couple of years old.

As with the iPhone 14, Apple is expected to continue offering four iPhone models in the iPhone 15 lineup: a regular-sized iPhone 15, a larger iPhone 15 Plus, and Pro versions of both phones with additional features.

We'll start with the things that all four of these iPhones are expected to get: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that the iPhone 14 Pro's "Dynamic Island" feature will come to all iPhone 15 models, replacing the "notch" cutout at the top of the screen in favor of a floating cutout that expands and shrinks based on what you're doing with the phone. All phones are also expected to get the customary camera upgrades (including "upgraded lenses" and a wider zoom range), and they'll be the first iPhones to trade Apple's proprietary Lightning port for the larger—but generally more capable and standardized—USB-C.

A great idea or sacrilege? We test a Jaguar E-Type converted to EV

Electrogenic’s powertrain suits the 1960s sports car, but this is no restomod.

A man drives a blue Jaguar E-Type convertible

Few things are as wonderful as classic cars. They come with pretty lines and tactile switches. They make people of a certain age think you're living some sort of dream, and people on the Internet will celebrate you. Having a kickass car from years gone by sitting in the driveway is awesome… so long as you're cool with wrenches, oil, and getting to know a mechanic. They need work, and depending on whether you get one that was well-built 60 years ago, some need more than others. This is mostly because of the big sweaty engine up front. If you have time and money, or like spending hours looking for that one ratchet that everyone uses, bully for you. If you're a little more pressed for time, Electrogenic has a solution.

Electrogenic has two methods of electrifying your car.

The Kidlington, UK, company will take your classic, remove all the fragile oily bits, and replace them with an electric setup. If you have a classic that hasn't had the full EV treatment yet, your car will be taken in, scanned, and options will be presented to you. Your preferred balance of range and performance will be weighed up, and an ideal solution found.

Europe turns its new $1.5 billion space telescope on, and happily it works

“The spacecraft will soon reach its final position.”

Euclid’s Visible instrument (VIS) will image the sky in visible light (550–900 nm) to take sharp images of billions of galaxies and measure their shapes. This image was taken during the commissioning of Euclid.

Nearly one month after launching into space, a European telescope has begun taking its first images and data of the Universe. And to the delight of scientists at the European Space Agency, everything seems to be working rather well.

As part of the months-long commissioning phase, both the telescope's visual and infrared-light cameras have started snapping photos of the cosmos. Scientists who helped develop these cameras—VIS for visible light, and NISP for Near Infrared Spectrograph and Photometer—say the new instruments work superbly.

"We are very pleased that the commissioning phase of Euclid is progressing well," Alessandra Roy, Euclid project manager at the German Space Agency at DLR, said. "The spacecraft will soon reach its final position at a distance of 1.5 million kilometers from Earth and begin scientific observations."
