Intel launches pricey 10-core chip, Xeon chip with better graphics, confirms “Kaby Lake” chips coming in 2016

Intel’s 7th-gen Core chips should be available before the end of 2016. During the company’s press event at Computex, Intel officials confirmed the chips, code-named “Kaby Lake,” were still on track to launch in the second half of the year, along with lower-power “Apollo Lake” chips which will be used in cheaper notebooks and 2-in-1 devices.

The announcements come shortly after the company announced plans to layoff 12,000 employees, cancel its next-gen Intel Atom chips, and shift a large part of its focus to cloud and interenet-of-things products.

Asus Transformer Book T101 budget 2-in-1 tablet on the way

This week Asus introduced a new line of Asus Transformer tablets with premium specs and a new design: instead of a hard keyboard that transforms the tablet into a notebook, the new Transformer 3, Transformer 3 Pro, and Transformer Mini have Microsoft Surface or iPad-style keyboards which connect to the bottom of the laptop, but which are easiest to use on a table or other flat surface.

But Asus isn’t giving up on its old school Transformer Book series.

Qualcomm introduces Snapdragon Wear 1100 chip for wearables

Qualcomm introduces Snapdragon Wear 1100 chip for wearables

There are an awful lot of smartwatches using Qualcomm’s processors, but most of them are using the Snapdragon 400 family of chips that were originally designed for phones.

Earlier this year Qualcomm introduced a new chip designed specifically for wearables, called the Snapdragon Wear 2100. And now the company is adding a Snapdragon Wear 1100 system-on-a-chip to its wearable lineup.

As you probably guessed from the name, the new chip is less powerful than the Snapdragon Wear 2100, and it’s targeted at devices that are more affordable and/or which may offer longer battery life or smaller size.

MediaTek’s Pump Express 3.0: From 0 to 70 percent battery charge in 20 minutes

Sure, the companies that make smartphones and their components have been trying to enable longer battery life by producing phones with massive batteries and energy efficient chips.

At the same time, we’re seeing a lot of technologies aimed at easing the pain of batteries that don’t last long enough, including some tools that help us charge devices wirelessly (without plugging them in) and others that let us recharge our devices in minutes instead of hours.
