Asus ROG Avalon concept re-imagines upgradeable gaming PCs

It’s a lot easier to upgrade most desktop computers than it is to upgrade the hardware in a laptop. But it’d be even easier if you could do it without opening the case.

A few years ago Razer showed of a modular gaming PC concept code-named Project Christine, that would allow you to upgrade or replace just about anything by sliding out one module and inserting another.

Project Christine has yet to make the move from concept to real device.

ARM unveils Cortex-73 and Mali-G71 graphics for VR and augmented reality

Smartphone chips have to walk a fine line between power efficiency and blazing-fast performance. And the way they do this without literally catching ablaze is usually to offer performance in short bursts: the processors hit top speeds for a brief period to help you get things done, and then slow down after a little while to keep your phone from overheating or your battery from dying.

But you need sustained performance if you want to use your phone for things like games or virtual reality experiences.

2 pound Asus ZenBook 3 laptop is half an inch thick, starts at $999

But this little laptop with a 12.5 inch display still packs a lot of power. Asus will offer models with up to an Intel Core i7 Skylake processor, up to 16GB of LPDDR3-2133 MHz RAM, and up to 1 TB of PCIe storage.

Asus launches Zenfone 3… and Zenfone 3 Deluxe and Ultra

Asus launches Zenfone 3… and Zenfone 3 Deluxe and Ultra

As expected, Asus is introducing its new flagship smartphone at the Computex show in Taiwan. What’s a little unexpected is that the Zenfone 3 isn’t alone.

There are actually three models: the 5.5 inch Zenfone 3, the 6.8 inch Zenfone 3 Ultra, and the 5.7 inch Zenfone 3 Deluxe, which has the more impressive specs of the bunch.

New features in this year’s models include an updated design with metal frames and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the front and back, the addition of fingerprint scanners, and Qualcomm Snapdragon processors (some Zenfone 2 models had Snapdragon chips, but the original Zenfone 2 had an Intel Atom chip).

Vorke V1 is a $200 mini PC with 4GB RAM, Celeron J3160 processor

Another day, another tiny desktop computer with a low-power processor and Windows 10 software. But the specs on these little desktops keep getting (a little) better.

Yesterday we highlighted the Beelink BT7, with an Atom x7 Cherry Trail processor, 4GB of RAM, and up to 320GB of storage. Today the folks at Geekbuying wrote in to let me know about a similar mini PC with a more powerful Celeron J3160 Braswell processor.

It’s called the Vorke V1, and it’s up for pre-order from Geekbuying or AliExpress for about $200.

Samsung shows off a 5.5 inch, 4K display for VR

4K displays might be overkill for smartphones if you just want to use them as phones… but now that many phones can double as virtual reality displays, a growing number of companies are producing small screens with more pixels than you’ll find on most 32 inch TVs.

Case in point: UploadVR notes that this week Samsung showed off a 5.5 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixel display at SID Display Week.

The screen 806 pixels per inch, which means you’d normally have to hold it very close to your to tell one pixel from another.
