Microsoft opens Windows Holographic platform, wants to see third-party HoloLens-style devices

Microsoft’s HoloLens may be the first device to support the company’s Windows Holographic platform, but Microsoft hopes it’s not the last. The company has announced it’s opening up the platform for third-party companies that want to make their own mixed-reality devices and accessories.

In other words, Microsoft wants Windows to be the operating system that powers upcoming virtual reality and augmented reality hardware much the way it already powers most of the world’s personal computers.

AMD Stony Ridge chips promise big boost for “value” laptops

AMD Stony Ridge chips promise big boost for “value” laptops

You can divide AMD’s 7th-gen A-series processors into two families: there are the higher-performance AMD A10 and A12 chips for premium laptops, and the AMD E2, A6, and A9 chips aimed at “value” computers.

While the company says both sets of chips offer big performance improvements over previous AMD processors, the biggest gains might be in the chips for cheaper laptops.

That’s because the processors formerly code-named “Stony Ridge” now use the same AMD “Excavator” CPU cores as the company’s more powerful chips.

AMD introduces Bristol Ridge chips for high-performance laptops

After previewing its new 7th-gen A-series processors in April, chip maker AMD is officially launching its new notebook processor lineup at Computex this week.

The lineup includes “Stony Ridge” chips designed for value laptops, which the company says should offer big performance gains over its previous-generation products, as well as new AMD A10 and A12 chips for higher-performance laptops.

AMD says these chips, formerly code-named “Bristol Ridge” should be competitive with Intel’s Core i5 Skylake processors, while offering significantly better graphics performance and competitive pricing.

Samsung’s new SSD is smaller than a microSD card… but way faster

Samsung’s new SSD is smaller than a microSD card… but way faster

SanDisk’s latest solid state drive is super-fast, supporting sequential read speeds up to 1,500 MB/s and write speeds up to 900MB/s. It can also hold a lot of storage: Samsung plans to offer models with up to 512GB of storage.

But the new Samsung PM971-NVMe SSD is tiny: it weighs just 1 gram and measures 20mm x 16mm x 1.5mm. That makes it smaller than an SD card (32mm x 24mm) or a typical postage stamp (24mm x 22mm).

Allwinner believes the future of VR is all-in-one headsets

Allwinner believes the future of VR is all-in-one headsets

Virtual Reality systems are still in their infancy, but right now some of the most popular models are basically Google Cardboard-style headsets that you slide a phone into and Oculus Rift/HTC Vive-style headsets that are designed to connect to a PC or game console.

But recently we’ve started to see a handful of all-in-one VR systems that offer the same kind of functionality you’d get from a phone+Cardboard solution, but without the inconvenience of having to constantly insert and remove your phone.

HoloLens software update brings multitasking, Bluetooth mouse support, and more

Microsoft began shipping its HoloLens Development Edition in March, and now the company is rolling out the first major software update for folks that have spent $3000 on the developer version of the company’s upcoming augmented reality headset.

Among other things, the new software adds support for multi-tasking, Bluetooth mouse input, and additional voice commands.

Multi-tasking is kind of old hat on most computing platforms, but it’s nice to see you can now run more than one app at a time on HoloLens.

Deals of the Day (5-31-2016)

A year after SanDisk launched its first 200GB microSDXC card with a hefty $240 price tag, you can now pick one up for a lot less.

The storage card offers read speeds up to 90MB/s and typically sells for under $100 these days. But right now Amazon is selling the card for $60, which is one of the best prices I’ve seen.

It’s part of a larger sale on storage and networking products.

Meet the Asus Transformer Mini (specs revealed)

Meet the Asus Transformer Mini (specs revealed)

Asus introduced 3 new Transformer tablets this week, but the company has largely focused on the higher-priced, higher-specced Transformer 3 and Transformer 3 Pro. The official press release had far fewer details about the smaller, cheaper Transformer Mini.

But thanks to some of the folks on the ground in Taipei for the Computex show this week, now we have a better idea of what makes this 10.1 inch tablet tick.

My colleagues at MobileGeeks and Notebook Italia both got some hands-on time with the Mini, and here are some of the specs they discovered:

  • 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display
  • Intel Atom x5-Z8350 Cherry Trail processor
  • 2GB and 4GB RAM options
  • Support for up to 128GB of storage (entry-level models will probably have less)
  • Full-sized and micro USB ports, micro HDMI, and a microSD card reader
  • 802.11ac WiFi
  • Fingerprint reader

This isn’t the only new 10 inch tablet from Asus with a Cherry Trail processor.

Now you can buy a BBC micro:bit mini-computer for £13

BBC’s plans to get a million small, programmable computing devices into the hands of UK students may have taken a little more than planned. But the BBC began giving away micro:bit computers to students earlier this year.

Now they’re available for non-students willing to spend £13 (about $19 US).

Premier Farnell/Element14 is taking pre-orders and several resellers including Pimoroni and The PiHut are offering micro:bit devices for the same prices, as well as a few bundle deals with additional accessories.
