Andromium’s $99 Superbook turns your Android phone into a laptop (crowdfunding)

Smartphones have changed the way the world gets online, by letting you put a tiny, touchscreen computer in your pocket or handbag. But sometimes it’s still nice to have a larger screen, a full-sized keyboard, and a mouse or touchpad.

The Superbook is a smartphone accessory that gives you all those things. It looks like a laptop, but all the processing power and software comes from your phone.

Plug your Android smartphone into the Superbook with a USB cable and you can interact with your Android apps in a notebook-like environment.

Kaby Lake is coming: Intel begins shipping 7th-gen Core chips

Intel’s next-gen processors have begun shipping, which means we should start seeing notebooks and other computers powered by the 7th-gen Intel Core series processors soon.

Code-named “Kaby Lake,” the new chips will be manufactured using a 14nm process, much like the 5th and 6th-gen “Broadwell” and “Skylake” processors before them, but Intel says the new processors feature optimizations that should offer better performance.

Up until now, Intel has been releasing chips on a Tick-Tock schedule, which means moving to a smaller process with every other chip release.

Aiptek iBeamBlock is a modular mini PC, projector, and battery

As tech components get smaller and smaller, you can cram a lot of things into a tiny space. A few days ago I highlighted a new mini-desktop computer that also has a 7 inch touchscreen display and battery that lets you use it like a tablet… and a built-in projector that lets you display movies, presentations, games or anything else on a screen.

But Aiptek has a different solution: The iBeamBlock a modular system that lets you buy just the components you need.

Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is designed to survive drops over 5 feet (most of the time)

Corning’s Gorilla Glass is a touch, scratch-resistant type of glass that’s often used in smartphones to help prevent screens from scratching or cracking when they come in contact with other objects (like the ground).

Nearly two years after the introducing of Gorilla Glass 4, which was set to survive about 80 percent of one-meter (3.3 foot) falls, Corning has unveiled Gorilla Glass 5. This time the company says the the glass should survive about 80 percent of falls of 1.6 meters (5.3 feet).

Skype is dropping support for older operating systems

Skype is dropping support for older operating systems

Skype’s apps for chatting and making voice or video calls have been around longer than Facetime, Hangouts, WhatsApp, or most other modern-day alternatives. But the Skype team has been making major changes in recent years and as the latest step in transitioning from a peer-to-peer communications app to a cloud-hosted one, Skype’s Gurdeep Pall says the app will be dropping support for some older platforms.

If you’ve got a relatively recent version of Windows, OS X, Android, or Linux you should be good to go.

NVIDIA to unveil “Tegra-Next” chip details in August

NVIDIA’s chips may not be as popular with smartphone and tablet makers as they were a few years ago, but if you use a Tegra processor in a device where power consumption isn’t as constrained, it can offer pretty impressive performance. The Tegra X1 chip powers the company’s NVIDIA Shield Android TV console, and NVIDIA has been positioning its processors as solutions for smart cars for a few years.

Now the company is getting ready to launch its next-gen Tegra chip, and NVIDIA’s Andi Skende will be talking about the “Tegra-Next System-on-a-Chip” at the Hot Chips conference in California on August 22nd.

Deals of the Day (7-20-2016)

When I finished reviewing the Emtec GEM Box micro-console recently, I concluded that it’s a nice little box for streaming PC games over the internet using Gamefly Streaming… if you don’t already have an Amazon Fire TV device that can do the same thing. I do have a Fire TV Stick… so I’m tempted to pick up a Fire TV game controller, and Amazon’s making it a little harder to resist that temptation today.

Huawei Honor Note 8 may be a 6.6 inch, 2K smartphone

Huawei Honor Note 8 may be a 6.6 inch, 2K smartphone

The word “phablet” has kind of lost its meaning in recent years, now that phones with 5.5 inch or larger screens seem to be just about common as models with smaller displays. But an upcoming 6.6 inch smartphone from Huawei has me tempted to pull the word out of retirement because let’s phase it, the phone’s pretty much tablet-sized.

The Huawei Honor EDI-AL10 showed up at China’s TENAA website recently, and rumor has it that the phone will be branded as the Honor Note 8.

Android 7.0 devices won’t start if boot image contains malware or corrupt data

Android 7.0 devices won’t start if boot image contains malware or corrupt data

Google is tightening security in Android 7.0. The next version of Android launches this summer, and when it does Google will require that devices that ship with Android 7.0 pre-installed use strict enforcement of the company’s verified boot software.

In a nutshell, that means if your device has malware or corrupt data in the boot image or a verified partition, the phone, tablet, or TV box won’t boot.

That sounds scary, but it’s actually a way of protecting you from potential security threats: if your phone contains malware that alters the boot image, you’ll know.
