Thanksgiving may be four months away, but Best Buy has decided Black Friday should come a little early this year. The store is running a Black Friday in July sale with deep discounts on a range of laptops, tablets, phones, wearables, and other gadgets.
The sale runs through Saturday, July 22nd.
I suspect there’ll be a Black Friday in November sale too… you’ll just have to wait a while for that.

BlackBerry is expected to launch several new Android phones this year, including a mid-range model code-named “Hamburg,” which is expected to sell for under $400 and have a touchscreen display but no physical keyboard.
Now more details about the Hamburg are starting to emerge. The phone recently showed up at the FCC and GFXBench websites.
The FCC documents don’t provide many details about the phone, other than the fact that it seems to have a 2,610 mAh battery and that the phone is manufacturer by TCL, the same company behind Alcatel smartphones.

The NVIDIA Shield game console/media streamer may have launched over a year ago, but it’s still one of the most powerful Android TV boxes on the market.
It’s also one of the most expensive, with prices starting at $200 for the Shield console and a game controller.
Now a Chinese company has produced a cheap knockoff… a really cheap one. The M9S Z8 sells for as little as $66 and looks an awful lot like NVIDIA’s console.

Xiaomi is holding an event on July 27th, when the company is expected to introduce its first laptop, among other things. We’ve already seen a few alleged photos of the upcoming laptop, but now some slides and pictures said to be from the upcoming presentation are making the rounds.
Take these with a grain of salt because they’re relatively easy to fake… but nothing in the presentation seems particularly unreasonable… including the derivative design of the laptop.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active is a variant of the Galaxy S7 line of smartphones designed for use outdoors or in other rough environments. The phone has a rugged case, a big battery, and a waterproof design.
Well, it’s supposed to be waterproof anyway. But when the folks at Consumer Reports put that claim to the test earlier this month, they discovered that the the phone had stopped working when it was removed from a water tank.

Xiaomi’s first Android-powered device is coming to the US soon… but it’s not a smartphone or tablet. Earlier this year the company revealed that it would bring its new Mi Box Android TV device to the United States, and now it looks like the wait may be almost over.
The Mi Box just showed up at the FCC website, which could be an indication that it will be available for purchase soon.
The Mi Box is a small gadget that you can plug into a TV to stream internet video, play games, listen to music, and run Android apps that have been optimized for TV screens.

I’ve written about a lot of tablets over the past 6 years or so… and I’ve even bought a few myself. But to be honest, the only thing I really use tablets for is reading eBooks and comic books. For just about everything else I could do with a tablet, I’d prefer to use a phone or laptop.
But it can be tough to navigate comics and graphic models on a laptop, and smartphone displays are too small to properly show images in a way that makes the text bubbles readable.

NSA whistleblower and privacy activist Edward Snowden has partnered with hardware hacker bunnie Huang to develop a tool that lets you know if your smartphone may be spying on you (or rather, assisting someone else to spy on you).
The two have published a paper about a system which they describe as a tool for “countering lawful abuses of digital surveillance.” In other words, it’s a design for smartphone case that monitors your phone’s wireless activity and could let you know if government agencies are spying on you.
