With the possible exception of Samsung’s Galaxy Active line of smarpthones, most phones with super-rugged designs are meant for industrial, military, or other enterprise/government work. But Kyocera is positioning its new waterproof, dust-proof, shock-proof, and drop-proof phone as a device for businesses or consumers.
The Kyocera Duraforce Pro is a rugged smartphone with generally mid-range specs. But Kyocera also threw in an “action” camera which means you could carry your phone with you and leave your GoPro at home next time you go kayaking/hiking/offroading, or what have you.

When Microsoft launched Windows 10 last summer, the company said it would be available as a free update for Windows 7 and later for the first year that it was available. The official cut-off date was July 29th, 2016: if you didn’t update by then, Microsoft said you’d have to pay for a full Windows license to upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
But many people have noticed that this isn’t quite true: you can still upgrade using your existing Windows license to activate the newer version of the operating system.

Remember last summer when Samsung introduced a 16TB solid state drive? That’s nothing. This week Seagate announced that it’s working on a 16 terabyte SSD, and Lenovo is also working on a 48TB SSD.
Sadly, neither of these storage devices is likely to show up in your next laptop.
Both Lenovo and Seagate are positioning their high-capacity SSDs as solutions for servers rather than personal computers. They’ll likely be very expensive, but offer higher speeds, better reliability, and lower power consumption than hard drives, which could make them attractive options for some enterprise customers.

Android is an open source operating system… in that Google typically releases the source code for each new version of Android when it’s ready. But Android is developed largely behind closed doors and the versions of the operating system that ship with most phones, tablets, and other devices included some closed-source software including Google Play Services and proprietary drivers for graphics, wireless chips, and more.
For the past few years the folks at Replicant have been offering a version of Android that’s stripped of all that proprietary code.

Microsoft has released new Surface products every year since the launch of the first Microsoft Surface tablet. So it should come as no surprise that the company is expected to unveil new Surface hardware soon.

Japan Display Inc is taking the war on screen bezels to new heights. While we’ve seen a number of phones with super-slim side bezels over the past few years, there are usually pretty thick chunks of plastic or metal above or below the screen: because that’s where you hide the circuitry, speakers, and other gear.
But Japan Display (JDI) says its new 5.5 inch “Full Active” display has slim bezels around all four sides and could be used for phones that are nearly all-screen (on the front, at least).
Continue reading JDI’s new display could lead to phones that are nearly all screen at Liliputing.

The ZTE Axon line of smartphones offer high-end specs at upper mid-range prices: the new ZTE Axon 7 smartphone sells for $400, and you can pick up last year’s Axon Pro for $350.
But what if you want a bit more control over your phone than ZTE gives you out of the box? Now the company is offering an official method for unlocking the bootloader of those phones.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to install custom firmware on the phone, replacing the software that comes with the Axon Pro or Axon 7.
