More Intel “Kaby Lake” chip details leak

Intel’s 7th-gen Core processors are already shipping to laptop makers, and Intel says we can expect to start seeing notebooks that use the chips this fall. So far Intel hasn’t shared a lot of details about its Kaby Lake chips, other than the fact that they’re based on a 14nm design.

It’s likely that we’ll hear a lot more about Kaby Lake soon. The IFA consumer electronics show takes takes place at the end of August/beginning of September, and we’ll probably see a whole bunch of new laptops, tablets, and 2-in-1s announced that feature Kaby Lake chips (as well as models with cheaper, lower-power Intel “Apollo Lake” processors).

Want a cheap Chromebook that can run Android apps, but don’t care whether it has a touchscreen or not? Right now there aren’t any non-touch Chromebooks capable of running Android apps, but later this year Google plans to roll out support to dozens of Chrome OS devices… including the Asus C201 Chromebook.

And right now you can pick one up from Amazon for $159.

For the past few months I’ve been using a sample Chromebook Flip that Asus loaned me, and I’ve been pretty impressed with its performance.

Evan Blass may have “retired” from leaking details about upcoming phones and other gadgets two years ago, but he’s still got great sources, and he still keeps sharing information about products before they’re officially launched.

Two of the latest? The LG V20 and the Sony Xperia X Compact. One will be the first phone to ship with Android 7.0 software and the other is a smaller version of Sony’s latest flagship phones.

Sony Xperia X Compact

Sony has yet to actually acknowledge the existence of the Xperia X Compact, which makes this leak kind of exciting.

HP Sure View makes it hard for snoopers to see your laptop screen

Sometimes you want a laptop or tablet with wide viewing angles so that it’s easy to see the screen no matter where you’re sitting or how you’re holding the device. Want the person sitting next to you to be able to see a video without the image looking like a photo negative? Then you’ll want an IPS display or a screen that uses similar technology.

But sometimes you don’t want the person sitting next to you or behind you to see what’s on your screen.

A new NVIDIA Shield controller hits the FCC, new console incoming?

A new NVIDIA Shield controller hits the FCC, new console incoming?

It’s been over a year since the NVIDIA Shield game console/media streamer went on sale. While it’s not clear if NVIDIA plans to launch a new version of the game console this year, it looks like the company might at least have some new hardware on the way.

A new version of the NVIDIA Shield game controller showed up at the FCC website this week.

While there aren’t a lot of details in the FCC listing, the label drawing shows that the shape is a little different than that for the first-gen Shield TV game controller.

Android 7.0 includes a hidden navigation bar customizing tool (partially functional)

Google Android 7.0 has updated notification and quick settings features, support for viewing multiple apps at the same time, and many other new features. But one change Google didn’t announce? The ability to customize the navigation bar on the bottom of your screen — you know, the space where the home, back, and recents buttons show up.

But a tipster sent Android Police a series of pictures showing that there’s a navigation bar customizer hidden in Android 7.0.

Google’s Wi-Fi Assistant from Project Fi is coming to all Nexus phones*

Google’s Wi-Fi Assistant from Project Fi is coming to all Nexus phones*

Google’s Project Fi is a cellular network that blurs the lines between WiFi and mobile data. If you’re at home or another place where you can connect to a WiFi hotspot, the service will route your phone calls over WiFi. But the call will automatically be handed off to a mobile network if you walk out of range of that hotspot.

In order to take advantage of WiFi as often as possible, Project Fi customers can use a feature called Wi-Fi Assistant to automatically connect to open networks whenever they’re detected.
