NWS forecasts will ditch all-caps format starting May 11—DON’T PANIC

Software upgrade finally removes teletype issues that had once blocked switch.

Even by 1991, the National Weather Service's all-caps requirement felt dated. We're still waiting, but mixed-case change will finally appear in May of this year. (credit: National Weather Service)

After upgrading its supercomputing core in 2015, the National Weather Service is continuing its lumbering slog toward modern systems in a far different way: by saying goodbye to teletype.

After more than two decades of trying, the NWS has finally made every upgrade needed in both the hardware and software chain to remove an all-caps requirement from forecasts and other warnings. The service's Monday announcement kicked off the 30-day transition period that is being given so that customers and subscribers can prepare for the change to mixed-case lettering in all NWS announcements, meaning we'll see the change begin to propagate on May 11.

All-caps messaging was previously required due to the NWS' reliance on teletype machines, which broadcast their text over phone lines and weren't built to recognize upper or lower cases of letters. In addition to removing teletype machines from the information chain, the NWS also had to upgrade its AWIPS 2 software system across the board to recognize mixed-type submissions.

Massive undersea crab swarm caught on video for the first time

Scientists couldn’t believe their eyes when thousands of crabs gathered under their sub.

When three scientists descended over a thousand feet underwater in an exploration vessel off the coast of Panama, they expected to see many kinds of life. They'd chosen to explore the Hannibal Seamount, a flat-topped undersea mountain that's the ocean equivalent of a tropical jungle, rich with a diversity of animals and plants found nowhere else. Their submersible, the Deep Rover 2, has the look of a giant, transparent bubble; with the help of spotlights, they could peer out from every angle. But as they approached the northwest flank of the seamount, they saw something inexplicable on the ocean floor.

It looked like an underwater dust storm. As they got closer, the researchers realized it was an enormous swarm of crabs, kicking up sediment from the seafloor. They had never seen anything like it.

(Quantum Break, PC)

Chrome and Firefox Block KickassTorrents as “Phishing” Site

Chrome and Firefox are actively blocking direct access to the popular torrent site KickassTorrents. According to the browsers, Kat.cr is a “deceptive site” or “web forgery,” that may steal user information. The site’s operators are looking into the issue, and hope to resolve it soon.

kickasstorrents_500x500There’s a slight panic breaking out among KickassTorrents users, who are having a hard time accessing the site.

Over the past few hours Chrome and Firefox have both started to block access to Kat.cr due to reported security issues.

Instead of a page filled with the latest torrents, visitors are presented with an ominous red warning banner.

“Deceptive site ahead: Attackers on kat.cr may trick you into doing something dangerous like installing software or revealing your personal information,” the Chrome warning reads.

Firefox users encounter a similar banner, branding Kat.cr as a “web forgery” which may trick users into sharing personal information. This may lead to identity theft or other fraud.

“Web forgeries are designed to trick you into revealing personal or financial information by imitating sources you may trust. Entering any information on this web page may result in identity theft or other fraud,” the browser warns.

Firefox’s alert

Interestingly, Google’s safebrowsing page for Kat.cr currently lists no issues with the site.

The KAT team informs TorrentFreak that they are looking into the issue and hope to have the blocks removed soon.

This is not the first time the two browsers have flagged KickassTorrents. Last year site was flagged on several occasions after it was linked to a malicious advertiser.

At the time the KAT team said they addressed the issue in a matter of hours, but it nonetheless took more than two days before the site was unblocked on both Firefox and Chrome.

Impatient or adventurous users who want to bypass the warning can do so by disabling their browser’s security warnings altogether in the settings, at their own risk of course.
