The Witness review: An island where knowledge, mystery are the treasures

Long-awaited, Myst-like follow-up to Braid is a masterclass of puzzle design.

After 30 hours of intense play, I had not beaten The Witness, the latest video game from acclaimed designer Jonathan Blow. I'd reached an ending sequence, but I knew damn well the Myst-like game had more puzzles for me to solve. Three months later, between occasional returns to the game and a very recent speed run, in which I retraced my steps on its virtual island and re-solved most of its puzzles, I still have not "completed" the game, as far as I can tell.

At the moment, I have remained stumped about a few of its most intense puzzles, the ones still staring me in the face. That won't last too much longer, I imagine, because I will eventually muster the brainpower and discover some hidden in-game clues to beat them, or because I'll cave in and seek help from thousands of fervent fans devouring this long-awaited follow-up to indie classic Braid.

What will persist after that moment—after the final circle has been connected along the final line to the final neat-tipped conclusion on the panel—is a sensation that this video game is not meant to be "completed." I've made my peace with that belief after months of play, which has included many long walks along its beautiful environs, many reflections upon its toughest puzzles, and many questions about its mysterious decorations.

Samsung’s gold Gear S2 Classic to cost thousands less than Apple Watch Edition

The rose gold and platinum watches hit China first, then the rest of the world.

If you've had a hankering for a gold smartwatch, you may have a more affordable option soon. Samsung announced the global launch of its new Gear S2 Classic smartwatch, which it revealed at CES a few weeks ago. While the company did not officially release pricing of the new Gear S2 Classic models, some reports spotted the watch up for preorder in Europe for €480. That would make the watch about $520 when it comes to the United States.

To put that in perspective, Apple's gold smartwatch will cost you about $17,000—but there's a key difference between Apple's device and Samsung's. The Gear S2 Classic has a stainless steel body (like the original) that now comes plated in rose gold or platinum. Apple's smartwatch is made of solid gold, which explains its hefy price tag.

The new Gear S2 Classic models are made of more premium materials than the original Classic, and they will have a few new matching watch faces to go along with the color schemes. Other than the new materials, the new Classic has the same specs as the original. While the original Gear S2 has a nice, rounded design, it sports a much more futuristic look than the Classic models, which provide a more traditional, modern style.

Forget Blue Origin vs. SpaceX—the real battle is between old and new ideas

Lost in the debate over who did what, first, is a critical revolution in spaceflight.

Friday’s launch of the New Shepard rocket in West Texas renewed the tired debate about whether Blue Origin or SpaceX has achieved more in the reusable spaceflight game. These discussions first flared up in November, when no less than Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk sparred on Twitter over the magnitude of New Shepard’s first flight into space and subsequent vertical landing. Ultimately the debate is vacuous and completely misses the big picture.

Each company has achievements to be proud of. Blue Origin landed first and now has taken the next critical step toward full reusability by reflying a booster. SpaceX also landed vertically, about a month after Blue Origin. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket is a much larger and more powerful booster, flying a more dynamically challenging profile. Technically, its landing was more impressive. The company is also developing this capability while delivering payloads into orbit for NASA and the private sector.

There is no “better.” Both companies are kicking ass. I think a lot of people who read this probably share a common goal with me: we’d like to see wider access to space. We’d like to see colonization of the Moon, or maybe Mars, or maybe beyond. We’d like to see a highway to the stars. There is only one way this happens: dramatically reducing the cost of getting into space. And the way to do this is by reusing your rockets and spacecraft.

Doctor Who gets lengthy sabbatical as showrunner Steven Moffat quits

Broadchurch creator and regular Torchwood writer tapped for top timey-wimey job.

Doctor Who fans prepare to be bitterly disappointed: you won't be getting your timey-wimey fix this year, because season 10 won't hit our screens until 2017, the BBC has confirmed.

The reason? Long-running showrunner Steven Moffat has run out of puff. He will pass the baton (OK, Sonic Screwdriver) to Chris Chibnall—the creator of ITV's gripping whodunnit, Broadchurch—who will take over the iconic British sci-fi drama at the start of season 11.

The BBC, which fiendishly buried this news late on Friday night in the hope that no-one would notice, has promised a Christmas Day special, but that will be the first and only time a new episode of the much-loved show will appear on the TV this year.
