The DragonBox Pyra is a portable computer that looks like a cross between a tiny laptop and a Nintendo DX game console… and it kind of works like a cross between those devices as well. It’s got a 5 inch display, a QWERTY keyboard, a Linux-based operating system that can handle desktop apps as well as games, and physical gaming buttons.
It’s been under development for several years, and it’s expected to be available for purchase soon for about 500 Euros (plus VAT).

Intel recently announced plans to layoff 11 percent of its workforce as the company shifts its focus from PCs to the cloud… now we’re starting to get an idea of what that will mean for the company’s line of chips for personal computers: the low-power, entry-level Atom chip family is dead.
More specifically, Forbes reports that Intel is cancelling plans to launch next-gen Atom chips based on the previously announced SoFIA and Broxton technology.

Since the first model launched in 2013 with a $1299 price tag, the Google Chromebook Pixel has always been the most expensive Chrome OS laptop money could buy. But in 2015 the company eased the pain a bit by introducing a new model with a starting price of $999.
Now that model is out of stock… and a Google representative tells me the company has no plans of re-stocking the $999 Chromebook Pixel with a Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage.

Google’s OnHub series routers are designed to be easy to use and attractive enough that you might not want to hide them underneath or behind furniture (which can actually improve performance since the signal won’t be obstructed).
But another thing that sets OnHub devices from Asus and TP-Link apart from most other routers is their support for automatic software updates… and the latest brings support for IFTTT (If this, then that).
The free service lets you create “recipes” that can trigger all sorts of actions, and in the case of the OnHub platform, IFTTT support sort of transforms your router into a smart home hub.

This week HP and Google introduced a new Chrome OS laptop with an aluminum case, backlit keyboard, and other premium specs including support for up to 16GB of RAM and up to a 3200 x 1800 pixel display.
But while the companies told us the HP Chromebook 13 G1 would have a starting price of $499, they weren’t particularly clear on how much money you’d spend on a model with top-of-the-line specs.
Now we know.

Toshiba may be planning to stop marketing its notebooks in the United States, but you can still pick up a handful of models while they’re in stock… and that includes one of the best Chromebook bargains from 2015.
The Toshiba Chromebook 2 has an Intel Celeron N2840 processor, up to 4GB of RAM, and up to a 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS display. And while it normally sells for around $300 if you want the full HD model, Meh is currently offering a refurbished 1080p Toshiba Chromebook 2 for just $160.

Fairphone has gotten a fair amount of attention for releasing a phone with a modular design (making it easy to replace or upgrade some components) and which is partially built from ethically-sourced materials. But the Dutch startup has a wider view of what makes a phone “fair,” and that also includes allowing users to choose the software that runs on their device.
So the Fairphone 2 has an unlockable bootloader, making it possible to replace the operating system that comes pre-installed on the phone.

Research firm IDC says tablet makers shipped about 39.6 million units in the first quarter of 2016… which sounds like a lot of tablets until you realize that the number for the same period in 2015 was 46.4 million.
In other words, overall tablet shipments are down by nearly 15 percent.
But as expected, IDC did see growth in one area: 2-in-1 tablets, also sometimes called detachables.
Of course, not everyone agrees on the exact definitions of tablets, detachables, and other relevant terms.
