DIY audio adapter for Amazon Kindle text-to-speech

Amazon recently launched an Audio Adapter for the Kindle Paperwhite that allows you to plug in a pair of headphones and use Amazon’s VoiceView feature. Not only does VoiceView read eBooks aloud to you using Amazon’s text-to-speech engine, but it also provides audible navigation cues, helping visually-impaired users to interact with their Kindles.

The Audio Adapter for Kindle sells for $20, and Amazon says it officially only supports the Kindle Paperwhite (7th) gen eReader.

Deals of the Day (5-12-2016)

I’m just putting the finishing touches on a review the Asus Zenbook UX305UA ultrabook. At $750, it’s a pretty great bargain… but it lacks a few features that you’ll find on more expensive models that typically sell for $900 and up.

But right now a number of stores are knocking $100 off the price of a Zenbook UX303UA, which means that you can pick up this notebook with a 13.3 inch full HD display, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a Core i5 Skylake processor for $799.

Google launches a keyboard app for iOS (with integrated search)

Google launches a keyboard app for iOS (with integrated search)

Now that Apple allows iPhone users to install third-party keyboards, it opens the door for apps that not only change the way you type, but which can perform other functions.

Case in point: Google has just released an iOS keyboard called Gboard. Not only does it let you enter text and emoji. It also incorporates Google Search, letting you search the web without leaving the app you’re using.

That might sound like a gimmick, but it comes in handy if you want to paste search results into an email or Messenger conversation.

Zotac launches two Windows 10 PC sticks, one is fanless

Zotac launches two Windows 10 PC sticks, one is fanless

Zotac unveiled its first PC-on-a-stick at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Now the company is getting ready to start selling its PC Sticks… and it turns out they’ll come in two versions.

When you look at the spec sheet, the Zotac ZBOX PI220 and PI221 look virtually identical. But one model has a fan, while the other is passively cooled, for silent operation.

The Zotac ZBOX PI220 has a “SmartFan” cooling system and measures 5.2″ x 1.7″ 0.62″.

AOC unveils first all-in-one PC with Remix OS

Google’s Android operating system was originally designed for mobile devices like smartphones, but it was later adapted to run on a range of products including watches, in-vehicle systems, and TV boxes. Google also seems to be taking steps to blur the lines between Android and Chrome OS, which could pave the way for Android-powered laptop and desktop computers.

But Chinese startup Jide is one of a few companies that’s already converted Android into a desktop OS.

Report: Google’s Amazon Echo-like product is code-named “Chirp”

Apple, Google, and Microsoft all have software that lets you talk to your phone to perform some actions or get answers to your questions. Siri, Cortana, and Google’s voice search tools can come in handy in the car, around the house, or in other places where you may not want to use your hands to interact with your phone (and where other people won’t look at you funny when you shout at your phone).

But Amazon has had a bit of a surprise hit with its Alexa voice service products because the first products to utilize them were not phones.

Google lets impatient Nexus owners update Android quickly without wiping data

Google lets impatient Nexus owners update Android quickly without wiping data

One of the benefits of having a Google Nexus smartphone, tablet, or TV box is that operating system updates are pushed to your device directly from Google. You don’t have to wait for your wireless carrier or phone maker to do anything, which means you’ll probably get updates much more quickly than folks using the latest Samsung, LG, or HTC device.

But if you don’t want to wait for Google to release an over-the-air updates, you can always go to the Google Developers page and download the factory image for your device.

Latest Windows preview removes Wi-Fi Sense network sharing, offers Edge browser improvments

Microsoft has released a new preview build of Windows 10 to members of the Windows Insider program, and it includes several updates affecting the Microsoft Edge web browser, improved support for Ubuntu on Windows, and a few other tweaks.

But one of the most notable changes is something that’s not in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14342: a feature that allows you to automatically connect to Wi-Fi networks shared by their contacts without entering a password.

Reports: Google to launch Android VR hardware

Google made it easy for anyone to get a taste of virtual reality when the company launched Google Cardboard a few years ago. Throw your smartphone into a cheap cardboard case with special lenses and you can experience 360-degree videos, apps, or virtual big-screen movies for a few bucks.

But this year we’re starting to see the launch of high-power VR systems from Oculus, HTC, and Sony, as well as new hardware from Chinese companies.
