Google’s Nexus 5X and BlackBerry’s Priv are both smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processors and Android 6.0 software. But the Priv has 50 percent more RAM, a slide-out keyboard, and some custom BlackBerry apps that you won’t find on the Priv. There’s no shortage of cheap, tiny desktop computers with Intel Atom processors and Windows 10 software. But the GOLE1 is a bit different.
It’s basically a tiny Windows desktop that’s small enough to slide into a pocket. But in addition to four full-sized USB ports and HDMI output, the GOLE1 has a 5 inch touchscreen display and a battery that lets you use it as a standalone device (for a little while).
The developers of GOLE1 have working prototypes, and are hoping to begin shipping devices to backers of an Indiegogo campaign starting in July.

Asus has a new flagship smartphone on the way, but we’ll probably have to wait for Computex to learn more about the upcoming Asus Zenfone 3.
But the company did launch a different phone this week: the 2nd-gen Asus Zenfone Max is a smartphone with mid-range specs and a big battery… just like last year’s model. But mid-range specs in 2016 are a little better than they were a year ago.

After years of hinting that the lines between Android and Chrome OS were getting thinner and blurrier, Google recently announced that Chromebooks would soon be able to run just about any Android app. The Google Play Store will be available for three Chromebooks with touchscreen displays starting in June, and the list of Chrome OS laptops, desktops, and other devices that will gain access to Android apps is pretty long… and expected to get longer.

The first Intel Atom processor launched in 2008, at a time when small, inexpensive laptops were just starting to take off. Now it looks like the last Intel Atom chips may have been the Cherry Trail series processors that launched in 2015.
Intel recently announced plans to scrap Cherry Trail’s replacement, formerly code-named Broxton, as well as the low-power SoFIA family of chips for smartphones and other low-power devices.
In order to properly mourn the passing of Intel’s Atom processor, I recorded an episode of the LPX Show featuring group of bloggers who have been covering affordable portables for just as long as I have.
