Deals of the Day (6-27-2016)

So you want to surf the web, play games, or run Office software on your television, but you don’t want to go through the trouble of running a cable from your laptop to your TV. No problem: over the past few years we’ve seen a bunch of tiny computer-on-a-stick devices that you can plug right into the HDMI port of your TV.

Google’s Project Bloks teaches kids to code with physical hardware modules

There are a lot of projects designed to help kids learn to code… so that instead of just using games and apps developed by others, they learn the basics of creating their own software at an early age.

Google’s Project Bloks takes a different approach to most, because it focuses on tangible programming. In other words, kids learn to code not by typing characters onto a screen, but by snapping a series of physical blocks together.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 specs leaked ahead of August 2nd launch

Samsung follow-up to the Galaxy Note 5 smartphone will be… the Galaxy Note 7? The company is said to be skipping the number 6.

The move means that Samsung’s new big-screened, stylus-equipped smartphone will have a name that more closely resembles the Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphones that launched earlier this year.

Samsung hasn’t made any official announcements about the upcoming phone yet, but in a series of tweets, Evan Blass has confirmed the name and a few specs.

Samsung Ahead may be a Google Glass-like Smart Helmet (according to trademark filing)

Samsung has filed for a trademark on a logo for an unannounced product called Ahead… which seems to some sort of device that you wear… on your head. Get it?

While the trademark application doesn’t provide a lot of details, Samsung does describe the category of devices which it would apply to, which paints a picture of a helmet with Google Glass-style smart features.

For example, the trademark would apply to “werable telecommunication machines and implements in the shape of a helmet,” and “wearable computer in the shape of a helmet,” as well as “electric audio an dvisual apparatus” such as MP3 players, portable computers, or digital cameras.

Netflix may let you download videos for offline playback

Netflix lets subscribers stream thousands of movies and TV shows over the internet. But if you want to watch Netflix videos without an internet connection, right now your best bet is to sign up for the company’s old-school DVD/Blu-ray rental service.

But soon you may be able to download some videos for offline viewing… something that rivals like Amazon Instant Video already allow.

Netflix hasn’t officially announced any plans to support video downloads, but Light Reading’s Mari Silbey reports that industry sources suggest it could be coming by the end of 2016.

Kobo Aura ONE 7.8 inch and 6 inch eReaders coming soon?

Kobo Aura ONE 7.8 inch and 6 inch eReaders coming soon?

Kobo may be preparing to launch a new eReader with a 7.8 inch display. An unannounced device called the Kobo Aura ONE showed up at the FCC this week, and it’s described as a “7.8 inch Electronic Display Device.”

There’s also a model with a 6 inch screen… which will likely have similar specs, but a smaller display. But the 7.8 inch model interests me most, since it’s a rather unusual size for an eReader.

Google’s Nexus devices aren’t getting freeform multi-window support (yet)

Google’s Nexus devices aren’t getting freeform multi-window support (yet)

One of the biggest changes in Android N is native multi-window support. When you’re using an Android phone or tablet running the upcoming version of Android you’ll be able to view two apps in side-by-side windows and you’ll be able to resize those windows to make one app bigger and the other smaller.

Android N also includes support for “freeform” windows that let you position apps anywhere on the screen, much as you would with a desktop operating system like Windows, macOS, or most GNU/Linux-based operating systems.
