Android-x86 releases early build of Nougat for desktop PCs

Google and Intel may not be doing much work to make sure that Android can run on devices with Intel processors anymore… but the Android-x86 project continues to release new builds of Android for computers with Intel and AMD chips.

The latest release? A build of Android 7.0 for developers.

In other words, you can now run Android 7.0 Nougat on a PC.

The software is based on Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code, and it’s still a work in progress.

This is why you don’t see cheap Windows devices with 8GB of RAM (specs for cheap Windows licenses)

This is why you don’t see cheap Windows devices with 8GB of RAM (specs for cheap Windows licenses)

Microsoft offers Windows licenses for free to makers of tablets with 9 inch or smaller displays… but the company also offers deep discounts for makers of low-end notebooks, 2-in-1 devices, stick PCs, and all-in-one desktops.

So if you’ve ever wondered why all cheap Windows devices seem to have extraordinarily similar specs, here’s the answer: because in order to qualify for a Windows license that costs $30 or less, they need to agree to specific hardware guidelines.

TCL Xess mini is 15.6 inch all-in-one Android device

TCL Xess mini is 15.6 inch all-in-one Android device

Alcatel’s Xess is a 17.3 inch all-in-one Android device that you can use as a big tablet, a small TV, or… whatever it is you’d use a really big touchscreen device for.

If the 17.3 inch model is a bit too big for you, though, soon you’ll have another option: Alcatel’s parent company TCL has just introduced a new model called the Xess mini.

It’s a little smaller.

The Xess mini has a 15.6 inch touchscreen display and an adjustable kickstand built into the case, allowing you to position the tablet flat on a table or other surface or prop it up at 30 degree, 50 degree, or 75 degree angles for drawing, web browsing, or watching videos, among other things.

Intel and AMD’s latest chips won’t support Windows 8.1 or earlier (at least not officially)

Intel and AMD’s latest chips won’t support Windows 8.1 or earlier (at least not officially)

Windows 10 has been available for more than a year, so it’s not surprising that most new PCs ship with the operating system. But if you really want Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 you can always install it yourself. A handful of PC vendors will even offer to load an older version of Windows for you.

But that may change with the launch of Intel’s 7th-gen Core/Kaby Lake chips and AMD’s new Bristol Ridge processors.

Samsung’s newest C-Lab projects: Glasses-free 3D, temporary tattoo printer

Samsung’s newest C-Lab projects: Glasses-free 3D, temporary tattoo printer

Samsung’s C-Lab is an incubator for projects developer by employees. First unveiled to the public in late 2015, we’ve seen C-Labs concepts including fitness trackers, hands-free voice tools for motorycle helmets, and an app that transcribes music when you hum it out loud.

This week Samsung is showing off a few new (and old) C-Lab projects at the IFA show in Berlin.

Prinker

One new project is the awkwardly named Prinker — a device that can “print on human skin.”

Basically it’s a wireless mobile printer that users non-toxic ink to print temporary tattoos that will last for up to 2 days… or until you wash them off with soap and water.
