Extradition ruling in Lauri Love hacking case set for September

US officials want Love to face charges of hacking NASA, the FBI, and the US Army.

Briton Lauri Love is expected to learn on September 16 whether a judge will rule in favour of his extradition to the US to face charges of alleged hacking, Westminster Magistrates' Court has heard.

According to his legal representative, Love—who faces charges of hacking as part of the Anonymous collective in 2013—could serve up to 99 years in prison in the US. He is accused of using a security flaw in ColdFusion to gain administrator-level access to servers.

Love is alleged to have been involved in the hack known as #OpLastResort, which targeted the US Army, the US Federal Reserve, the FBI, NASA, and the Missile Defense Agency in retaliation over the suicide, while awaiting trial, of Aaron Swartz.

Amazon & BLU’s $50 smartphone hacked: Root & custom recovery now available

Amazon & BLU’s $50 smartphone hacked: Root & custom recovery now available

It’s been less than a month since Amazon started selling two deeply discounted smartphones that come with ads on the lock screen and notification tray. Unsurprisingly it didn’t take long for someone to root the Moto G4 Prime Exclusive and eliminate the ads on that $150 version of the phone.

But Amazon also offers an even cheaper phone: the BLU R1 HD Prime Exclusive has a starting price of just $50 when you buy the ad-supported model (an ad-free version sells for $100 and up).

Despite a rocky tenure as Yahoo chief executive that is likely to end in a sale to Verizon, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer today said the company has been transformed under her leadership and that she "couldn't be more proud of the achievements to date."

In a call with investors describing the $4.8 billion (£3.7 billion) acquisition of Yahoo's operating business that Verizon announced this morning, Mayer praised the Yahoo staff for "the tremendous accomplishments made over the past few years in our transformation." Without mentioning missteps like the Tumblr acquisition, Mayer said, "we invested in and built our mobile, video, native, and social businesses from nothing in 2011 to $1.6 billion in GAAP revenue in 2015. We tripled our mobile base to over 600 million monthly active users and generated over $1 billion of mobile advertising revenue last year."

Yahoo, Mayer said, has also "streamlined and modernized every aspect of our consumer products and dramatically improved our advertiser products. We've laid incredibly solid groundwork and the sale gives us the opportunity to build on that momentum."

Another Google Nexus “Sailfish” leak confirms 1080p display, Snapdragon CPU

Google is rumored to be working with HTC on two new Nexus smartphones for 2016. A series of leaks have suggested that one will feature a 5 inch, 1080p display while the other has a 5.5 inch, 2560 x 1440 pixel screen.

Now another leak apparently confirms that the smaller phone, code-named “Sailfish” will have a 1920 x 1080 pixel display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (or maybe Snapdragon 821) processor, among other things.

PGS handheld gaming PC Kickstarter campaign cancelled

PGS handheld gaming PC Kickstarter campaign cancelled

The PGS handheld game PC looks good on paper: it has two screens, physical gaming buttons, support for up to 8GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage, and support for both Windows 10 and Android 6.0 software.

But when Portable Solutions started a Kickstarter campaign for the project, a lot of people started wondering if the PGS was too good to be true… especially given the facts that the company had never produced hardware before, only had a prototype hobbled together from existing computers made by other companies, and only sought to raise $100,000 (which seemed like an unreasonably low figure, given the amount of work it’d take to bring this sort of computer into the world).
